NFL will allow teams to use alternate-color helmets again, starting in 2022

The NFL will bring back alternate-color helmets next year.

In a memo sent to teams this afternoon, the league announced a new policy that will give teams the opportunity to use two different helmets starting in the 2022 season, a popular move with fans who like alternate and throwback uniforms.

Teams can pair the second helmet with alternate, throwback or Color Rush uniforms, so long as they follow all league policies on ensuring that all alternate helmets are properly fitted, and that all players are provided with sufficient opportunity to wear the alternate helmets in practice prior to wearing them in a game.

Player safety was the primary reason the NFL previously told teams to stop using alternate helmets: Teams wanted every player to have one helmet that fit him properly, and not to alter it during the season. But the new policy addresses those concerns by requiring teams to have a new set of alternate helmets for every player on the roster, to ensure that all alternate helmets are the same make, model and size as the player’s primary helmet, and by requiring players to get fitted for both their primary and alternate helmets at the same time in training camp.

  1. Here come the Kelly Green helmets with Silver wings! ‘Bout time.
    GO BIRDS!!!

  2. They finally figured out a way to make money from this decision. Get ready for full alternate uniforms with throwback helmets, especially for those leather helmet teams.

  3. Stated reason for “one shell rule”: Safety.
Actual reason: Branding. The NFL wants fans to be able to turn on a game and instantly know who is playing.

I don’t necessarily disagree with the actual reason — branding — but the connection to safety was a farce. For example, a Packers player might use multiple yellow helmets throughout the season. The idea that a player would add the use of a green helmet and that would be unsafe was never plausible.

  4. Can’t wait to see the Chiefs go with an alternate mustard helmet to match their ketchup jerseys and complete their McDonald’s uniform. Ronald McDonald Kingdom, Baby!

  5. Hawks silver helmets are pretty cool along with the Hawk going around the sleeve.

  6. When the Browns do throwback helmets, it’s the same as their current one. That happens when you have a look that has survived the test of time.

  7. It’s a shame that Brady will be retired before the Buccaneers get a chance to wear their throwback uniforms.

  8. Great decision, long overdue, a year too late.

At a time when many longtime fans are grumbling about one thing or another about the league, the NFL had a really easy thing – throwback unis with matching helmets – right at hand that would have soothed many an ill temper, and they bungled it. It’s what they do best.

  9. They change the rules on pass interference few weeks before the start of the season but they won’t allow to wear a second helmet until next season??? This is so NFL…

    All about the Benjamins.

Maybe, but as a fan I love it and sincerely hope the Bills bust out the red helmets a couple times per year. The idea that the league/teams couldn’t provide 2 safe helmets per player was absolute nonsense.

They just changed uniforms last year, right? Just checking.

  12. That old school red Falcons helmet is one of the best. They should go back to those.

  13. I’ve never understood this, the equipment guys touchup and/or repaint the helmets each week, why couldn’t that alternate been done in this fashion?

  14. White helmet, Pat Patriot, red jersey/white shoulder stripes, white pants! Yes!

  15. Get ready for full alternate uniforms with throwback helmets, especially for those leather helmet teams.

Probably not. The only leather-helmet throwbacks I can recall before the one-helmet rule was put into place were the Packers’, and no one seemed to understand that that was what the brown helmets were supposed to represent.

If the fans don’t get it, the fans won’t buy it.

  16. Josh Allen isn’t one of the best QBs on the move. For the most part, Allen only scrambles to his right and when he does, his passes aren’t that accurate, especially when he throws deep. What if I told you that Lamar Jackson has a higher QB rating, QBR, which is second to only Patrick Mahomes since 2019 and has more TD passes. Jackson has a higher completion percentage, Y/A, TD pass percentage, TD to int ratio, is better on 3rd downs, better under pressure and has fewer turnovers. Jackson is more accurate throw to the first down marker on 3rd down, more accurate on deep passes, has better depth adjusted accuracy and is more accurate on intermediate accuracy. What makes Allen seem like a better QB than Jackson, is the dependability of Allen’s receivers. Jackson’s receivers dropped about 10% of his 376 pass attempts. If those drops were caught, Jackson would’ve been in the MVP discussion again in 2020/21. Add in Jackson’s ability as runner and he has the edge over Allen.

  17. Teams that could use a “throwback color” and have it match at least one of their current uniforms include:

    Seattle (silver)
    Atlanta (red)
    Denver (light blue)
    LA Chargers (navy)
    Tennessee (light blue)
    Pittsburgh (yellow)
    Buffalo (red)

  18. Not sure why they couldn’t have done it this year. Brady really wanted to wear the Bucco Bruce uniform. Good chance that he won’t be here in 2022, especially if the Bucs can repeat.

  19. Good. I bet Browns fans miss the old school pumpkin orange with white face mask helmets instead of those current citrus orange with grey face mask helmets. Long story short the Browns are the poster child of the “one of these things is not like the other” segments on sesame street. They change things but it takes a magnifying glass to notice them.
