Cam Newton says he feeds off the haters

Cam Newton is hard at work, seeking to hold off rookie challenger Mac Jones. The veteran quarterback is working with his personal quarterbacks coach, George Whitfield Jr., at Georgia Tech.

Whitfield hosted a Q&A with his star pupil — a former Heisman Trophy winner and league MVP — on Instagram.

The first question Whitfield asked Newton was how he has dealt with “the haters.”

“Simple,” Newton told Whitfield, via Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald. “Feed your focus. Feed it. If the hate ain’t in my focus, I don’t feed it. I feed off of it, but I don’t feed it. It’s two different things. When I sense or when I dwell on hatred, that’s the product that’s going to come out — rage, anger. But that’s the hatred using me, not me using the hatred. So I want to process that and make that fuel me. I don’t dwell on what a person may say, what this person may say, she say, I just use it to my advantage and I feed what I want it to feed.”

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has named Newton the starter, but that means nothing in reality. Newton still will have to hold onto the job in training camp.

Newton explained to Whitfield how he goes about pursuing his goals, which surely are bigger than merely holding onto the starting job.

“You’ve got to visualize yourself already there. Get your mental thought of being in that moment and taking your place there,” Newton said. “And once you get there, find so much distress that you can gutter up and feel comfortable in it. Whenever that is. And that’s how you grind. You know what I’m saying? Just take your mind to that place, stay there, get uncomfortable, and be comfortable with being in that position.”

Newton, 32, went 7-8 in his first season as the Patriots’ starter, and the team missed the playoffs.

  1. He can feed off them all he wants from the sideline because he stinks. And I mean stinks bad.

  2. Yep. Threw 8 TD passes in 15 starts last year.

Imagine the records he’s going to break now that he’s motivated.

  3. Then he sure have a lot of hate to eat, but it is mostly from outsiders because old and present coaches and players that worked with him are pretty much unanimous praising him and his work ethic. It’s keyboard warriors that have a problem with him, Cam is the opposite of Tim Tebow.

  4. Cam using visualization to succeed! He’s on the right track. There’s a lesson hidden in there for those who aren’t familiar with the technique promoted in almost every self help book on the planet.

I’m still rooting for Big Mac.

  5. Time to feed Cam because I am shocked that Mitch Trubisky has a better winning % than YOU and your are still considered a QB1….eat away cause you stink worse than Bills backup qb!

And yet Newton threw less TDs and more Ints than Tebow in his 2nd season (albeit his best season). Newton threw for more yards and rushed for more TDs. Tebow ran for more TDs.

There’s an unsurprising 2 TD difference between the two of them. There’s an argument to be made Newton had a very Tebow like year last year.

  7. This sounds like Cam is regurgitating a therapy session. He sounds seriously deep in trying to keep from second guessing himself. Dude’s head just isn’t right and for a starting QB in the NFL, that ain’t good.

  8. That’s note hate, Cam, thats everyone enjoying seeing Pats fans realizing the the days of “get lucky drafting a future hall of famer while playing in the weakest division” are long gone.

Yes. Nick Saban and BB are horrible judges of talent.

  10. Newton had no chance last year. Signed in July, coming off injuries, with no time to learn the playbook. He also had the worst collection of TEs and WRs in the NFL. He got off to a decent start, then got Covid. Not saying he’s an All Pro or an MVP, but he’ll be a lot better than the couch potato wannabes think he’ll be. Isn’t it fun to be a fan and just say everybody stinks.

  11. I’m thankful that Ron Rivera never brought him to Washington despite the number of opportunities he had to. We already had a child with Dwayne Haskins and he was the last thing we needed before we finally jettisoned him and now!

  12. I don’t hate Cam. But, his last few seasons he just hasn’t played well. That’s a fact. Is he done? I don’t know, but it sure is pointing in that direction. Again, no hate, just an objective observation.

  13. Keep going Cam, the haters were saying Stidham was better and was going to beat you out. They are saying the same about Mac Jones…some are stll saying it with Stidham.

  14. Well he should use a different motivational technique. Because clearly his haters don’t up his game enough to even resemble what he used to be capable of.

How did Brady do with that same talent? He went 12 and 4. Let that slowly sink in and marinade.

  16. What a clown. At least he’s got enough food to last him for the rest of his life.

  17. Cam Newton is hard at work
    __________________________

YEA planning his post-game wardrobe for 17 games this season, it seems to be the thing he’s most obsessed with!

  18. Ain’t been the same since the super bowl, ironically, the hate was never stronger at that time and he walked away from it. Needs to forget about hate and embrace pocket presence, and the playbook mainly

  19. Haters, NAH we’re not all haters, a lot of us just realize the you’ve only had four season with a 60% or better complete percentage and in 10 seasons in the NFL you’ve had exactly one season(2015) with a 3 to 1 or better TD to INT ratio(which is average or less now days) so we’re just realist, not haters!

  20. Cam is more successful than most of you. Stay commenting about a fumble years ago. He was an MVP. Last years team was trash and he got picked up late. Plenty of pros couldn’t make this team or got cut.

  21. “Yep. Threw 8 TD passes in 15 starts last year.

Imagine the records he’s going to break now that he’s motivated.”

I’m pretty sure he said the same thing last year too when nobody wanted him after he was released. Obviously it didn’t work so well.

  22. Cam ran for over 500 yards in 137 carries, averaging 4.2 yards. He lost just 1 fumble (it did lose the Buffalo game).

He doesn’t have to be the best passer if he can do that again, he just needs to eliminate interceptions and move the chains. With that defense, and special teams, if they control the ball they won’t need to score a lot of points.

    Undeniably, his teammates respect him.

  23. I am Boston Irish but have to say there are so many horrible white quarterbacks that get a pass that there has to be a correlation between Cam’s race and the negative comments and posts about him. Certainly not all. Objective reasoning can justify criticizing Cam’s performance but it doesn’t justify the amount and level of vitriol. Look in the mirror and assess your motives in what you write.

  24. All of this is so much talk. Really means nothing. The guy is simply a poor passer of the football which is why he gets so much hate. For Pats fans who watched one of the best throwers in the history of the game for twenty years to then watch Cam they have a clue as to what they speak.

  25. As a Pats fan I can honestly say I hope Cam is playing for some other team this coming season…. ANY OTHER TEAM!!!!

  26. Cam reminds me of the greatest Onion article of all time, “I Look Back On My Boxing Career with Greebert.”

  27. I don’t think that the people that believe you really stink as a true viable NFL caliber QB are haters & I’m offended you think that…. I have no hate for you, I just feel & believe that your abilities to be a quality NFL QB are non existent based on everything that I have witnessed over your career…. Yeah, you had that fluke year but when push came to shove you folded like a lawn chair on the biggest stage & have spiraled down the rabbit hole ever since…..you just aren’t that good & never really have been as a QB in the NFL…. Sure you can run & scramble, but that’s only because you HAVE TO to be of any use….

  28. Even though he’s a Patriot, I’m still a Cam fan. He’s a fun player to watch.

It’s really a perfect situation for him, Jones & the Pats. He’s a great guy for Jones to learn from as he sits for a year (which is likely), and the Patriots will have a capable QB at the helm. Cam will be better this year than he was last year.

Which still won’t be enough to make that team a contender – but they’ll be competitive.

  29. He feeds off the haters? Really?
Where are the results? Because he’s starving!
He was hated for not trying to get the fumble in front of him in the Super Bowl, hasn’t been back!
He was hated in Carolina for his accuracy, hanging on to the ball too long and costing games, did he fix it feeding on that hate? No he was let go!
He was told when he arrived in New England he wasn’t the future just a bridge to their next franchise quarterback! Did he feed on that last year and prove he’s the guy going forward? No! Just the opposite and now they’ve drafted his replacement.
Cam it’s time to feed on the clipboard!

  30. One of his biggest problems is that he’s a marginal NFL starter who carries himself, and is treated as if, he’s a top tier QB. Nobody bashes journeyman talent when the guy (and the sports media) knows he’s a journeyman. Everyone loves a Ryan Fitzpatrick/Tedy Bridgewater kind of guy. It’s hard to like a guy who behaves like and is treated as a superstar but hasn’t won anything and posts mediocre stats.

  31. Listen to the Bill’s fan, who’s team has never won a big game in their history. Pats will challenge for the division. Didn’t say they’d win it, but they’ll have a top 5 rushing attack ST and D. If they get even decent production out of the passing game, and I think they will, watch out

  32. A lot of people bashing Cam as a starting QB. What does that say about BB’s take on Jarrett Stidham?

And it is funny watching Bills’ fans puff out their chests as if they have actually accomplished anything. Their SB trophy case remains empty ….just like the Lions and the Browns.

  33. Good for him because he goes out of his way to create them. These arrogant athletes never learn about karma.

  34. Systemic racism is strong and if cam was white he would be on the cover of madden

  35. Wow – didn’t expect that reaction from my comment. It was pretty objective.

Wasn’t puffing up my chest about the Bills, though now that you mention it, they have a much better team now, and the future looks bright. They are definitely better at the QB position, and probably for awhile.

Patriots fans might have a harder time than I thought adjusting to the post-Brady years.

  36. For a QB that’s had only ONE above-average season in his career, he may want to clam-up. (NE pun intended)

  37. Speaking for myself, I was rooting for the Pats to sign Cam last year. I do NOT hate him, i like him very much. BUT. I have no wish to sit thru another season like last year and he hasn’t shown much improvement in camp. I don’t think Patriots fans are the first fans in history to get excited about seeing the new kid. It’s not hate. It’s hope and Cam isn’t a part of that as far as I can see.

  38. Bills fans are used to disappointment. I understand that. But, Condescending to Pat fans as if you’ve won 6 Bowls, oreven 1, is a joke..

Newton was not an average QB if you look at the big picture.. 3500 yards passing, but was also a threat to run. Easy to leave out that fact.Very hard to defend. Was off to a great start in 2018

  39. “Bills fans are used to disappointment. I understand that. But, Condescending to Pat fans as if you’ve won 6 Bowls, oreven 1, is a joke..”

    __________________________________

That sounds so….Yankee-ish. It’s ironic that Pats fans sound so much like Yankees fans these days.

    6 is the new 27.

Anyway, quick news flash: neither you nor I have won ANY bowls.

  40. And New England can stick w/ Cam Newton as long as they want. I like Cam, but they won’t compete with Buffalo or Miami as long as Cam is starting.

I don’t think they will with Jones either, but that remains to be seen. Not a lot of ‘Bama success in the NFL at the QB position.

  41. As a Pats fan (and in fairness to billsrthefuture) it seems reasonable to question the Pats being a contender based on last year. I give the Pats the benefit of the doubt that will be proven wrong but it’s not reasonable to assume fans from other teams to do that.

That said, I hope billsrthefuture is 100% wrong 🙂

  42. Not a lot of ‘Bama success in the NFL at the QB position.

    _____

This makes it sound like there was a slew of highly rated Alabama QB’s that flamed out over the years, but thats not accurate.

Prior to Hurts, the other Bama QBs in the last 40 years were not projected to be NFL starters and they werent highly drafted or drafted at all, and there was no expectation of their success in the NFL. The last time an Alabama QB was drafted in the first FIVE rounds prior to Hurts was Richard Todd in 1976 (1st round).

Historically, Namath, Stabler, and Starr are HOFers who attended Alabama

Right now, the last three starting Alabama QB’s were 1st or 2nd round choices (Hurts, Tua, and Jones).

So, a long time ago there was success with Bama QB’s. Right now, the jury is still out on the new ones. In between, there werent any highly rated prospects.

I mean if you are just looking at a college and saying, there arent any good QB’s from there, Allen shouldnt be any good because there has never been a successful NFL QB from Wyoming.
