The Dolphins have extended the contracts of a couple of players from their 2018 draft class, but it doesn’t look like anything is imminent for tight end Mike Gesicki.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that there is “nothing percolating” between Gesicki and the team on the contract front right now. There’s no word about the prospects of that changing between now and the start of training camp.

Gesicki was a second-round pick in 2018 and has 126 catches for 1,475 yards and 11 touchdowns over his first three NFL seasons. The Dolphins drafted Hunter Long in the third round this year and it’s possible his development could impact Miami’s plans for Gesicki.

Linebacker Jerome Baker and kicker Jason Sanders were the two 2018 picks who signed extensions with the team this offseason. Tight end Durham Smythe is the only other selection from that draft still with the club.

  1. Yeah, he has the potential to be a very good catching TE, but he will never be even a good blocker and his stats don’t jump off the page. He makes some circus catches, but has disappeared in games. Miami is making him prove his worth. And they’ve got plenty of potential replacements….

  2. As a Bills fan I’ve seen the kid play and I’d take him over anyone on the current roster. The guy makes great, highly contested catches.

There is much more to playing the TE position. Especially if you are asking to get paid like Kittle & Kelce.

  4. As Mike Mayock would say, “He’s a ‘rocked up’ wide receiver.” I would like to see them resign him because of the mismatches he will see when Waddle and Fuller are on the field, but are they willing to pay thirteen million a year for a tight end who can’t block?

That’s because the Bills are not very good at TE and have never believed in the position.

I don’t know that there’s any indication that he has asked to get paid at that level.

But it’s interesting to note that when Kelce was asked to rank the top five TEs in the league (other than himself) he listed Kittle, Waller, Ertz, Andrews, and Gesicki. So that’s pretty high praise from the best TE in the league.
