Patrick Mahomes: “Still early” for comparisons with Tom Brady

Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes share the cover of this year’s Madden game in a move that gives a nod to those who feel that Mahomes is the likeliest heir to Brady’s throne as the best quarterback in the league.

Mahomes’ first four seasons in the league have provided plenty of reasons to think that he can have a Hall of Fame career, but Mahomes isn’t ready to tackle questions about how he relates to Brady. When Mahomes was asked on ESPN about the notion that he and Brady are the NFL equivalent to LeBron James and Michael Jordan, he passed on weighing in on their legacies.

“I mean, it’s still early for the LeBron-Michael Jordan stuff but for me, if you’re in this league then you’re trying to win,” Mahomes said, via Jordan Foote of SI.com. “You’re trying to be the best player on that football field every single day. Tom’s done it for a long time and he’s won a lot of Super Bowls. When you’re coming up and watching football, you want to go out there and win championships like he’s done. I’m going to try to do whatever I can every single year to put us in a position that we can win a lot of championships, hopefully.”

Brady’s end date remains unknown, but it’s going to come well ahead of Mahomes’ final snap and we’ll have to be a lot closer to that point to have a clear sense of whether the list of the league’s greatest quarterbacks needs an adjustment at the top.

  1. I’ll say there is NO comparison. Tom Brady is an enigma, one of a kind, he’s on a different planet. I find it hysterical for many fans and players to act as if going to the Superbowl every year is so easy just because you’re super talented. So many things have to go a team’s way to get there, let alone win it. Tom Brady is the only one who would even know what it feels like to expect to be in that game every year. There can only be ONE!

  2. Yeah about a decade too early. There is about a zero chance he will have a career like Brady. Talented, yeah, but he is nowhere near Brady’s class yet in football knowledge and his division looks like it will be fairly competitive for the next several years, unlike Brady who had basically a free pass every year in that laughable AFC East.

  3. After four seasons Brady already had amassed 3 SB wins. You are well behind young man

  4. I’m pretty sure Tommy wouldn’t still be talking about his sore toe, five months after scoring a measly 9 points in the year’s biggest game.

  5. Mahomes comparing himself to Brady and equating it to Lebron – MJ is classic. Go pull up the YouTube vid when an interviewer asks Ray Allen about Lebron versus MJ. He can’t help but smirk at the question, because to him, it’s not even close… nor is it to those that played against each. Mahomes isn’t even as comparable to Brady as Lebron is to MJ… despite the fact that his team has far more talent than any of Tom’s SB winning teams in NE. Mahomes should laugh the question off, because, it is laughable.

  6. If you split Brady’s career in thirds, he would have 3 hall of fame careers with no debate

  7. The arrogance and delusion is insane.

He is one hit away, undersized and quite frankly,, poor in his 2 SB appearances.

The cap hell comes now. Don’t expect to just cupcake through.

  8. Mahomes answered a stupid question from the media – you guys are all responding like he held a press conference saying “I’m better than Brady”. Relax.

  9. He dismissed the question in the politest way possible. Yeah, way too early to make those comparisons, but undersized? He’s an inch shorter and 5 lb heavier than Brady which is umm exactly average for the position.

  10. Compared to the young QBs, Mahomes is the closest chasing Brady although he’s still way behind. He already had 2 SB appearances winning one. He’s already ahead of Aaron Rodgers and equal to Russel Wilson and Mahomes is a lot younger than those two. If Brady retires, Mahomes will waltz to more SB appearances. He will only get better. He’s a “ magician” QB.

  11. I’m a huge Patriots and Brady enthusiast, and I thought he answered this question perfectly. I hope the guy has a fantastic career and he’s a pleasure to watch.
