Anthony Barr: I really believe Vikings have a Super Bowl-winning team

Linebacker Anthony Barr reworked his contract with the Vikings earlier this year and cut his salary for this season in exchange for becoming a free agent after the 2021 season.

If this is Barr’s final year in Minnesota, he thinks the team is positioned to send him out with a bang. Barr missed almost all of last season with a torn pectoral and the Vikings also have defensive back Danielle Hunter, linebacker Eric Kendricks and defensive tackle Michael Pierce back from missing all or much of last season.

They join veteran pickups Patrick Peterson, Dalvin Tomlinson, Sheldon Richardson, Bashaud Breeland, and Xavier Woods on a defense that also features five 2021 draft picks. All of that adds up to a group that could outperform last year’s defense by a wide margin and Barr thinks it can be part of a championship run.

“I really do believe that we have a Super Bowl-winning team this year,” Barr said on KMSP. “Obviously there’s a lot of steps to get to that point, and I’ve been through good seasons and bad seasons with this team. But every time we’ve had a tough year, we’ve always bounced back. I really feel like this year is going to be special.”

A defensive rebound doesn’t guarantee that they’ll make Barr’s grand prediction a reality, but the Vikings don’t stand much chance of reversing course if the unit isn’t dramatically better this time around.

  1. Barr is correct in that the Vikings should be a much better team this year, especially with the upgrade in defensive personnel. However, just about every team thinks they are on a Super Bowl caliber team in mid-July.

  2. Looks to me like they missed their chance once their big linemen got old. Whether they admit it or not they are in a semi-rebuild mode.

  3. The Vikings won’t have a Super Bowl winning team until they can adequately protect Cousins–or get a QB who is great when things break down. It is amazing that the Vikes paid huge money for a great-in-the-pocket-only QB but wasted that by fielding atrocious offensive lines. Even the truly amazing Mahomes couldn’t succeed when his line failed him in the Super Bowl. That’s been what Cousins has dealt with practically his entire NFL career.

  4. This will 100% be a playoff team this year. Any team that takes them lightly, is going to have a real bad time.

  5. I believe, except it’s going take 10 games to gel. 7-10 won’t get there even with Love qb’img GB.

  6. This headline brought a smile to my face.
    Thanks.

  7. Thanks, Anthony. With all the Rodgers’ crap going on, I needed a good laugh.

  8. Hey Anthony, the Vikings were 1-6 last season against teams that finished the season with a winning record. Yup, SB team!

  9. Dream on! Maybe Rodgers will come and play for you. You’d actually have a better chance if Favre came out of retirement and played for you!!

  10. If Tampa, Washington, Seattle, L.A., Seattle and Green Bay disappeared maybe.

  11. I think the Vikings could surprise many this year. They are working out while the Pack qb is awol.

  12. NFL strengths of schedule for 2021, ranked hardest to easiest list might mess that up. I don’t know who makes these schedules, but man. The whole NFC NORTH is in the top 10 with the Chiefs not far after and last years Super Bowl winners in the late 20’s. Must be their conference?

  13. Lots of teams have a super bowl winning team. They just need an elite QB. Tampa Bay had a great team, yet they hadn’t won a single playoff game in 18 years. They wouldn’t have won any last year either, if Brady hadn’t come over. There re a few more QB’s who would give them a shot, too.

  14. They’ve had much better teams that always found a way to lose eventually. No reason to think that tradition is going to be broken.

  15. Anytime a dialog starts with “I really do believe” I somehow become sceptical

  16. If Tony is correct, and they do win it all, how many does that make in total, anyone know?

Joe Flacco, Jim McMahon, Joe Namith, Brad Johnson, Doug Williams, Mark Rypien, Jim Plunkett all were not so good QBs and Cousins is better than all of them. They do have one thing in common with Rodgers all have one Super Bowl ring! Which debunks your theory you need an elite QB to win a Super Bowl. Look at the list……..you know what won those QBs super Bowls…DEFENSE!

Furthermore the Bucs defense bailed Brady out of his INTs in the Green Bay game. My god Trent Dilfer has as many rings as Rodgers!

  18. There is no upside to this comment only downside. Say this and lose in the divisional round and you’ve come in below expectations. Say you feel we have a team that can compete for a playoff spot that same loss in the division round now is framed as a successful season.

  19. Sorry, Kirk Cousins is not better than Jim Plunkett or Joe Namath. You can’t compare stats, that was a different Era, way less passing. However, Plunkett won 2 Super Bowls and Namath is in the Hall of Fame plus won one Super Bowl. Why? Because both of them made great plays against great teams when the biggest games were on the line, Cousins does the opposite…he would’ve lost the Super Bowl, or not even made it to them if you could somehow substitute him as qb on those Raiders and Jets teams. He is just a stat padder who builds his resume on beating bad teams, then chokes against good ones when the games are in the balance.

  20. As a Vikings fan, please be quiet. It’s a cliche, but play one game at a time. See where you are at the end. Don’t start reading your press clippings, already.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Dilfer isn’t as lucky as Brady either! Some teams can’t win even one SuperBowl with an elite quarterback or any other quarterback. The Vikings have had more HOF quarterbacks than the Packers, more All-Pro quarterbacks than the Packers, and more Pro-Bowl designee quarterbacks than the Packers. If they couldn’t sniff a SuperBowl with the best season ever produced by Brett Favre, they never will. What’s their excuse?

  22. Maybe 5 years ago, that (Viking) ship has sailed years ago! The Packers and Bears own the Vikings in that division, start with beating them first before you spit ridiculous pipe dreams.

    ————————————–

He didn’t choke in New Orleans in OT when he dropped a dime to Theilen now did he. He made a great play when the game was on the line. The Vikings have consistently had a bad O-Line since Cousins has been here but still he manages fairly decent numbers. Cousins wasn’t the problem last year, the defense was and I feel they are much improved. With the addition of OT Christian Darrisaw they have also improved on the O-Line.

Obviously you just watch the crawl on ESPN and really don’t watch the games or the players. My whole point was you do not need an elite QB to win the Super Bowl. Guys like Rodgers, Mahomes and Brady only come along so often not every QB that is drafted has that type of talent.

  24. How delusional! It’s clear to anybody that the Bears are rising to be the Cream of the Crop in the division for the next decade, now that we finally have our QB, while the Vikings (and Packers) are clearly on the decline.

But go ahead and dream away.

  25. It’s almost cruel how the team gets Vikings’ fans hopes up each year leading into the season. So much hope….so many possibilities. But alas, everyone knows how it all ends.

(Aerosmith’s Dream On playing in the background) yeah really looking forward to another year of Nagy’s college style offensive play calling. The Red Rifle will be benched and Fields will come in drop back make on read and run……then get hurt and it will be back to the red Rifle.

  28. Hey this is a great time of year to think that. Every player on every team should. The trick is to still feel that way in December. .

  29. Some of the comments by Packer Nation……lol. What is he supposed to say? He doesn’t believe his team can make it to the big show? Packers fans making fun of Vikings fans when their squad has lost 2 NFC title games back to back. Then saying Brady got lucky, maybe he did. It is a team game after all and the Bucs defense picked up the slack.

Barr has every reason to believe this because of the improvements made on defense, especially P Squared being added. The interior defensive line is much improved with Pierce and Tomlinson. Hunter is back on the edge and a good pass rush will be there.

Packer Nation you have a bigger problem – whether A A Ron will play or not and that proposition scares the hell outta you all.

    _______

Not sure on this one buddy, while the Bears have been improved and made the playoffs 2 out the past 3 years – I’m not convinced by your confidence. I think Matt Nagy is going to be fired at the end of this season and so will Ryan Pace.

    I could be wrong though.

  31. They’ll be better, but not likely SB-winning better, particularly with the tough schedule. Then again, I’ve go zero problem with a player optimistically looking forward to a good season. Better than hating your GM, alienating your team’s fans, and skipping team activities.

  32. Now that Rodgers has dumped all over Packer fans do Packer fans still get triggered when they hear barr’s name?

  33. Defense should EASILY vault into top 10 again, they were playing with absolute scraps last year. Should be an absolute force against the run & pass rush will be respectable.

Will still be a tall task though with 13 games against .500+ bound teams, 2 rookies on the OL & no depth at WR.

  34. Strength of schedule looks very different at the end of the year than at the beginning of the year. The NFC north plays the AFC North this season. This makes the NFC north’s schedule look tough because the AFC North sent three teams to the playoffs last year, but the AFC North’s schedule was silky soft. By week 9, if the Vikings have a good record, everyone will be talking about how weak their opponents have been.

  35. I guess we all missed the NFL Rule Change, it used to be you had to win the Division to get an opportunity to go to the Super Bowl or a Wild Card, or if their was not rule change we missed the NFL moving Green Bay and Chicago to another Division.

  36. At 90 players per team heading into training camp, that’s nearly 3000 players that should be thinking the same thing, my team has a chance to win a Superbowl.

Barr has made a PR mistake by claiming it out loud. That sets the table for expectations and if they should fall short, the first head on the fan’s chopping block will be Barr’s for his very public pronouncement. It’s been 60 plus years without a Superbowl win in the Twin Ciites and 2021 isn’t going to change that trend. They need a different QB, a huge upgrade across the offensive line and a new head coach, other than that, it’s looking pretty good.

  37. Some people here are laughing at this comment but I don’t recall many really thinking the TB Bucs were going to win a SB this time last year. Yeah they knew Brady was going there but most thought the Saints were a much better team.
Having said that I don’t think the Vikings are going to win SB either but they will
be back in the playoffs. You never know what happens then.

  38. he is talking about the NFL? The NFL Superbowl? The one they play in Feb. Not the one talked about it early August?
The Vikings has historically had more talent than other teams in the NFC North and consistently, hilariously done less.
