Paxton Lynch lands in CFL, hopes to get back to NFL

Five years ago, quarterback Paxton Lynch entered the NFL as a first-round pick of the defending Super Bowl champions in Denver. Now, he’s gone north of the border, up Saskatechewan way.

Lynch made his debut on Monday in the CFL, at Roughriders training camp.

It’s been difficult,” Lynch said of the transition to the Canadian game, via John Hodge of 3downnation.com. “A lot of the pre-snap stuff has been a big adjustment for me. When you break it all down and get down to the core of it, it’s really football — it’s the same, just different terminology and things like that concept-wise.”

It also entails a greater sense of urgency on every drive, because the CFL gives teams three chances to cover 10 yards, not four. Lynch, happy where he is, nevertheless wants to get back to the NFL.

“Absolutely,” Lynch said regarding his desire to get back to where he got started. “It’s always been my dream. As a kid, you dream of winning the Super Bowl and that fire inside of me to accomplish that is still there and it’s very strong. It hasn’t wavered at all, but I don’t want to get that confused with how I feel about being here because I’m very excited to be here.”

Lynch never did much with the Broncos, or with any other NFL team. And to think the Cowboys badly wanted to land Lynch in round one, and that they then settled for Dak Prescott in round four.

Credit Lynch for rolling the dice in Canada in an effort to continue his football career, and possibly to develop skills that will lead him back to the NFL. Another former first-round Broncos quarterback refused to give Canada a try when his career washed out, perhaps for fear that it would become even more clear at the CFL level that he shouldn’t be playing quarterback in any FL.

  1. Of course the other 1st round QB from Denver wouldn’t make the same move. That would entail real hard work and proving your worth. He prefers the way to get publicity and pretend to give it his all. Has many fooled I will say and has made more money than this 1st rounder.

  2. I remember scouting Lynch coming out of Memphis. Good physical tools and size. Accuracy was questionable. Then I watched some video of him talking, football and general, and it seemed pretty obvious that he wasn’t the brightest bulb.

  3. Well, first off, you need arm talent to play in Canada, so Tebow was never a candidate.

  4. Rumor has it that he would rather play video games than actually develop work ethic

  5. As Jerry Seinfeld has pointed out…once items get moved from the house to the garage, it’s highly unlikely that they make it back into the house.

  6. Gee, another quarterback refused to give Canada a try and yet he was never given such a coded insult by a certain football writer.
Also note the former Bronco never blamed anybody for his failure to catch on or burned bridges when teams and the league tried to extend his career.

  7. This was Jerry Jones’ top target, but Jerry took Prescott once Lynch was off of the board. Every dog has his day.

  8. Give the guy credit, he is willing to play anywhere he can to try to improve his game. I can think of high profile failed quarterbacks (Tebow, Kaepernick) that were to proud to try.

  9. I lost track of him after he left Denver but when was there he never seemed very excited about the game which is unusual for a young guy. And he never showed much of anything at all on the field. Even when guys don’t make it you can usually see some glimpses of what the scouts saw but Lynch didn’t stand out in any way at all. I was surprised he landed on another team he was so ho-hum.

Is that why Johnny Manziel was able to get a contract in the CFL, because of his arm talent?

  11. Paxton Lynch never went 8-5 with a playoff win before getting blackballed for Biblical proselytizing either!

He didn’t last. And he’s right.

  13. And just another one of the reasons that there is nearly a 70% BUST rate for 1st round NFL QBs from 2000 until 2016!

  14. Yeah we don’t throw a lot of WR screens up here. Wider field, 6 eligible receivers, and they can run straight towards the line of scrimmage as long as they don’t cross it before the snap.

QBs have to have a good deep ball up here.

  15. More players need to do this. I wish him luck. If it doesn’t work out, he will be able to sleep at night for the rest of his life.
