It looks like the Saints won’t have one of their key defenders to start the 2021 season.

Defensive tackle David Onyemata posted to Instagram early Friday morning that he tested positive for a banned substance and will be suspended.

“I was informed by the NFLPA yesterday that I have tested positive for a banned substance resulting in a suspension for part of the 2021 NFL season,” Onyemata wrote, via Katherine Terrell of TheAthletic.com. “While I was certainly surprised and disappointed with this news, I am responsible for what I put in my body. As I have never knowingly taken anything that could cause a positive test, we are currently in the process of testing the supplements I was taking at the time of the test. Regardless, I am committed to being more aware of any medication and dietary supplements that may contain substances banned by the NFL.”

Onyemata was a sixth-round pick for the Saints in 2016 and emerged as a full-time starter over the last two seasons. He recorded a career-high 6.5 sacks with 10 tackles for loss and 16 quarterback hits in 2020. He also had an interception and a part of passes defensed.

In five seasons, Onyemata has appeared in 78 games with 40 starts. He has 16.0 career sacks, 21 tackles for loss, and 42 quarterback hits.

New Orleans’ defense may have two of its starters suspended to begin the year. Back in March, cornerback Marshon Lattimore was arrested and charged with a fourth-degree felony of receiving a stolen handgun. While nothing has been announced as of yet, Lattimore could face league discipline over the incident.

  1. Do players actually believe they’ll never get caught when taking these substances?

  2. Many of the tea leaves coming out of New Orleans this off-season haven’t been good.

  3. Nfl needs a published list of all products containing banned substances. List should be availible to all teams and personnel. Would eliminate the truthful or fictitious claims of “i didn’t know”.

Take a look around the league and look at how these guys are built. There are PLENTY of guys taking substances that haven’t been caught.

  5. Oof, this one is not a positive as this is already a weak position outside of David O. Too bad his judgment doesnt match his ability on the field. Anyway, the rules are the rules and he broke them.

  6. “NFL needs a published list of all products containing banned substances. List should be available to all teams and personnel.”

    It already is.

That list, while not absolute or foolproof, already exists and is distributed to every player. They’re also given a hotline number to call in case they have a question about any product they’re thinking about taking that may be questionable or is not on the list.
While it’s possible for an approved or seemingly safe product to become cross-contaminated with a banned substance, the truth is the overwhelming majority of these guys know exactly what they’re taking when they take it and only use the “I didn’t know” excuse after they get caught.

  8. The Saints will probably top the list of surprising disappointing teams for 2021.

The list is available to every player of the NFL. They can use the NFLPA website which has a log in for AgeisShield. They simply type in their supplement and it will tell them if it has a substance contained in it that is banned by the NFL. How about the players or the league telling you what they tested positive for. Example: player blames his Flintstone vitamins on the reason he tested positive for HGH.

  10. Most players seek an edge over their competition. So guys who are caught may have a big fat contract based on the edge that got from the substance. If caught, some of the money is lost, if not, it may be worth the risk. Captalism at work here.

  11. Keven King of the packers could be available cheap. One problem playing without you guy completely versus having King may make no difference. Its like he is not on the field anyways
