Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger closing in on Brett Favre’s all-time record for times sacked

Tom Brady has re-written the NFL’s record book, but he’ll likely soon own a record he’d rather not have — unless Ben Roethlisberger gets to it first.

That record is the NFL’s all-time record for times sacked. Brett Favre owns the all-time record with 525 times sacked in his career, but Brady is right behind at 521 times sacked, and Roethlisberger is very close (tied with John Elway for third all time) with 516 times sacked.

Unlike sacks for defensive players, which the NFL only began officially recognizing in 1982, times sacked for quarterbacks has been an official NFL statistic since 1963.

Brady was sacked 21 times in 16 games last year, while Roethlisberger was sacked 13 times in 15 games. If both Brady and Roethlisberger play all 17 games in 2021, they’re both near locks to move ahead of Favre on the all-time sack list.

  1. I mean, I’d wear it as a badge of pride if I were a QB. Speaks to longevity and toughness. Maybe a little to not being able to avoid sacks, but considering the three QBs focused on here, that’s not quite the case.

  2. If the NFL was able to keep track of sacks of the QB since 1963, why were they not able to track who did the sack?

  3. Ben used to get sacked 13 times in a month, 13 times in 15 games is insane for him

  4. Ben is a big guy. Think about all the plays he had defenders hanging off of him while he got the pass off.

  5. I’m surprised that Elway is so close to Brady on the “sacked” list, since he was considerably more mobile than Brady and played far fewer games. Checked Wikipedia: Elway played in 234 regular season games and was sacked 516 times, or 2.2 sacks per game. Brady has played in 301 regular season games and has been sacked just five more times, 521, 1.7 per game, or a half a sack less than Elway. But, since their respective offensive lines are such a huge factor, it’s probably wise not to make too much of these numbers. Still, seems odd.

  6. Imagine being the guy that sacks Brady to make that record!! haha! I hope it doesn’t happen because i’m a huge Brady fan.

  7. It is a longevity stat. If you got sacked 500 times you played in the league for a very long time and had to be pretty good.

  8. How many times has Terry Bradshaw, the original TB12, been sacked? How many times has any of the ‘sack leaders’ been literally picked up and pile-driven head first into the ground like Bradshaw was? How many times have they gone out there and played with broken ribs?. Bradshaw was one of the toughest QB’s ever to play the game. He was a winner who walked away with 4 Super Bowl rings. Not the greatest stats but a great QB none the less. A winner.

  9. I’m surprised that Elway is so close to Brady on the “sacked” list, since he was considerably more mobile than Brady and played far fewer games.

Running QB hold balls much longer than pocket passers. Here is the ratio of SCK/Pass attempt

    Favre, 5.163%
    Brady, 4.916%
    Ben, 6.583&
    Elway, 7.117%
    Rodgers, 7.105%
    Wilson, 9.089%
    Stafford, 6.186%
    Rivers, 5.717%

  10. It’s an honor to be on this list. Look at the MLB list of pitchers with the most losses. It’s some of the greatest ever. And as I read negative comments about Terry Bradshaw, I would just add that those people obviously didn’t watch him play. They’re listening to talking heads and trying to compare stats from one era to another. Look at the Lombardi Trophy stats, and although they did have a great defense, just watch the tape. Bradshaw was awesome. Remember, this was the era when they didn’t allow offensive linemen to hold, like they do today. The rules today are designed to get QB’s all those stats. You don’t go 4 for 4 in super bowls by being overrated. That just ain’t happening.
