Tom Brady on his “motherf–ker” comment: Private motivation for me, they know who they are

Tom Brady revealed a month ago that when he hit free agency last year, he was stunned to learn that an unnamed other team had decided to stick with its current quarterback, rather than extend Brady a contract offer. Or, as Brady stated explicitly, “I was thinking, you’re sticking with that motherf–ker?”

That has resulted in a great deal of speculation about which team and which “motherf–ker” of a quarterback Brady was referencing. Brady’s lips are sealed.

“There’s private things for me that are going to remain motivational for me,” Brady said in an interview with Jim Gray on SiriusXM, via the Boston Herald. “They know who they are . . . it’s fine. Everyone has a choice to choose. I think what you realize is, there’s not as many smart people as you think. That’s just the reality. I think it’d be a no-brainer if you said, ‘Hey, you’ve got a chance to get Wayne Gretzky on your team, or you got a chance to have Michael Jordan on your team.’ . . . ‘Oh, we don’t need him, no thanks. We’re good.’

“In my mind, I’m kind of thinking, ‘OK, let me go show those teams what they’re missing.’ At the same time, let me go prove to the team that did bet on me, and the team that really showed they really wanted me, and committed to me, that I’m not going to let them down.”

Even after becoming widely proclaimed as the greatest of all time, Brady finds new ways to convince himself that he’s being doubted. And one unnamed team with an unnamed “motherf–ker” at quarterback is motivating Brady as a Buccaneer.

  1. I don’t think it really happened. At least not the way he says. I think it’s just a motivational tool he’s using.

  2. Brady’s “Summer of Self Importance Index” continues to hit new all time highs.
Once humble, now in a head to head sprint vs Bron Bron to secure the title of “Most Insufferable Athlete”

  3. Bad analogy Tom. Gretzky and Jordan were terrible when they went to other teams, especially Jordan.

  4. It was all of them. It was literally every other QB for every other team that wasn’t interested. That’s who Brady is, that’s how he thinks, and that’s why he will not stop. It just keeps getting better.

  5. The most over rated player in the history of sports. Dink and donk/one read QB that’s the ultimate system quarterback.

Like Troy Aikman said: “Where would Tom Brady be if it wasn’t for these short, quick, puny WRs that he’s had?”. He would have been out of the league in 3 years, that’s where.

  6. Let other people compare you to Gretzky or Jordan…..doing it yourself sounds tacky. Even if its true.

  7. A 43 year old QB past his prime with a hugh price tag is not what many teams desire, nothing personal.

  8. Carr…Tua…Mayfield…Cousins…really it could be any one of like…29 other quarterbacks.

  9. “Why can’t we get players like that?” – Pats fan in memory of Bob Lobel.

  10. It doesn’t matter who it is (maybe besides Aaron Rodgers or Patrick Mahomes, which it isn’t) — he’s right.

  11. Come on this is a no brainer…..its Jimmy G and San Fran. As a Bucs fan whatever keeps the GOAT motivated I am all for. Please haters just keep talking.

  12. Tom Brady is talking about Jarrett Stidham people get your facts straight.

  13. Hey, you’ve got a chance to get Wayne Gretzky on your team, or you got a chance to have Michael Jordan on your team.’ . . . ‘Oh, we don’t need him, no thanks. We’re good.’

    ———————————————

This isn’t a realistic way to look at it. Brady was over 40 and didn’t look great his last season with the Pats, I think it was reasonable for any team to be skeptical of his abilities at this juncture. Clearly he had the last laugh but still who saw that coming?

  14. In other news, TB’s head was seen floating across the skies of Florida on his “look at me” world tour

  15. There is only one team one quarterback, he played with grappolo for 3 years.

  16. Unless the “MFer” in question was Aaron Rodgers or Patrick Mahomes (which it isn’t) – he’s right.

  17. Since he lived just south of Candlestick Park and idolized Joe Montana, Brady’s first choice in free agency, I believe, was San Francisco. Therefore, the “motherf**ker” is Jimmy Garoppolo.

  18. Kind of weird that a man with so many rings would need this as motivation. I mean, seriously Tommy?

  19. Whatever keeps Brady motivated let him keep doing it, it’s worked for 20+ years.
Everything he accomplishes from this point forward is just icing on the cake.

  20. It’s Garoppolo.
And what is truly remarkable is that Brady has missed exactly 4 games over their overlapping careers, and that was due to suspension not injury. Garoppolo? 33.
It’s ridiculous that a player in his forties has been more resilient against injury than a player in his twenties.

  21. I’m fairly convinced he’s talking about Trubisky and the Bears. Because let’s be honest, that’s what everyone was thinking when they brought him back as the starter last year.

  22. Love the Bucs and don’t mind Brady, happy he is the QB there. Dude is starting to get really annoying though. Hopefully he shuts his trap once training camp starts.

    Aaron Rodgers disagrees.

  24. There’s nothing wrong with having a healthy, competitive EGO. Everyone wants Tom to be humble. Let the saints (priests) be humble and the warriors be ready for war. Tom is old now let him have fun. This politically correct stuff needs to stop; we are not perfect, but everyone judges the alpha women/male as something bad. There’s saints and warriors; I ain’t no saint, neither is Tom.

  25. SF .. the team he really cared abt playing for and winning with since its his hometown team and fav growing up, hence the passion + Jimmy G was his back-up/teammate for years so he knows him well and could make such a strong, personal comment ..

  26. I was reading the article and thinking to myself “wow, Rodgers would get destroyed by people if he said this” and then I checked the comments…and feel the need to say congrats on not being hypocrites pft commenters.

  27. What’s great abt this follow-up comment by ol’ TommyBoy is – when you realize he’s talking abt SF – he’s now also calling Lynch and Shanahan dumb: “thats just the reality,” he says!

    _______________

Tom is not a warrior. He’s a football player.

Humility is a virtue. Everyone should aspire to be humble.

  29. Considering he said in the full interview that it was a team he wouldnt have signed with anyways, you can pretty much rule out SF and Oakland since he was reportedly interested in them.

3 most obvious choices are in the NFC North, being Minnesota, Chicago and Detroit. Truth is considering the former Pats running the Lions, and Stafford trade rumors that offseason, i 100% believe he is talking about Stafford.

It makes sense for Quinn/Patricia to have been interested in him and it makes total sense for him to not have been interested in Detroit. Add in the fact that his entire starting career at Michigan, most fans wanted him benched for Drew Henson, and it makes even more sense for him to not be interested.

  30. I love how triggered all the haters get when Brady lays down some classic smack. nothing better than they know who they are

  31. Definitely not Jimmy G since he took the Niners to the SB just months before TB signed with TB.

  32. Wow, what has happened to TB12? He used to be so humble.

Maybe there is something to the Patriot Way after all…

  33. Poor little Tommy boy got his feelings hurt because a team decided to keep their own. It’s too bad an exceptional athlete WITH an education has too high of an opinion of himself. The nerve of teams not lining up to beg him to roll with them !!

  34. Watch it be Dallas… Dak was on a tag and no long term commitment. Also, at the time, Dak was trying to get every penny possible out of Dallas.

  35. His age was the reason… simple. Did he prove them all wrong? Yes. Is age still an issue? Absolutely

    Not really.

Humble QB’s don’t say things like “17 points? Hahaha. Yeah ok. That’s it?”

  37. It had to be an incumbent QB starter who was a free agent that was re-signed to a contract. Which leaves only one possibility. Tannehill. A place with a Brady connection but a place he wouldn’t really want to play. Tom says that the person knows who they are which if they were competing for the same job that would make a ton of sense. Tannehill wouldn’t be offended as that’s the nature of free agency. Mystery solved.

  38. The most over rated player in the history of sports. Dink and donk/one read QB that’s the ultimate system quarterback.

Imagine trying to say this with a straight face? The QB who holds almost every record for his position that, at 43 years old, went to a new team and won another SB in his first year.

    so he’s Gretzky or Jordan?

Tom is all about being Tom GOAT now

Yes, in terms of # of trophies, Brady is in that rarefied category.

I would love to have found this dink & dunk/one read QB who has won 7 rings for my Bears.

Your notion of equating QB greatness with capability of making difficult throws is so misguided. You are speaking from hero worshipping and wanting the QB to be field general, taking hits, running around to extend the play, etc… Except they don’t last and don’t always win games. The QB position is about making quick and smart decision for his team to win, even at the expense of stats. If it took running the ball all game long to win, the QB would do it. If it needed to throw 50 times, he would do it. And Brady has done all of that.

How many INTs did Tompa-3-Picks chuck vs Green Bay in the playoffs?

How many TDs did Tompa 3 tds vs Green Bay in the playoffs.
Funny how you left that part out.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

Someone did not watch Michael play for the Wizards. He outplayed his whole team at 40-41 years old and nearly got them into the playoffs twice. His knees just didn’t have the ability to play that far into the season anymore.

  43. It was the Pats and they told him they were going with Cam Newton. I would have said the same thing if I heard the Pats were going with him instead of bringing Brady back!

  44. As a Patriot fan, one of the things I liked most about Brady was that he was always humble & classy when interviewed.

After winning last years Super Bowl, he has emerged a different person. I wish he would go back to just doing your job. The NFL doesn’t need anymore insufferable big mouths.

I’m not taking away from his accomplishments, just his new attitude needs adjusting.

  45. “Bad analogy Tom. Gretzky and Jordan were terrible when they went to other teams, especially Jordan”
    —————————————————————————————-
In Gretzsky’s first six seasons with the Kings, he led the league in scoring three times, finished second once and third another. We should all be so “terrible”

  46. All we need to know is that as a head coach, BB has and will continue to have a losing record sans Brady.

  47. Living in New England my entire life there is one thing of many I can say about Brady is he doesn’t forget….He wants blood from anyone that doubts him. I haven’t seen him not get revenge yet no matter how many years its taken to maybe face the same teams or player again. Word of advice…Don’t poke the Alpha!

  48. So the real Tom Brady has been revealed. He thinks he’s the king of the world, a position many others assumed before they fell hard.

No wonder he’s friends with Aaron Rodgers.

Still never won a SB without a top-ten defense

    Great, Neither did Joe Montana.

  51. I’m waiting for Derek Carr to awkwardly and unnecessarily again enter himself into this conversation.

  52. Tom you amaze me with some of the language coming out of a 43 year old supposedly role model. We know you are the goat quarterback but sometimes I think you need to grow up

  53. Could have been any QB except for Mahomes, Rogers, Brees and Josh Allen. All MVP candidates.

Still never won a SB without a top-ten defense

    —-
Brady won the conference twice with one of the worst defenses in football. Montana never did that.

  55. The only QB that I could see Brady saying that about and it would be 100% accurate based on his personality and his play is Baker Mayfield

  56. And it would be so Browns to turn down Brady for that stiff Mayfield. I know for a fact that said no to Arians because he was publicly campaigning for the Browns job

  57. Well, whoever it is, these guys need to step it up and should use this as motivation and improve their game.

  58. I’d have to put Brady ahead of Gretzky and Jordan at this time. Out of those three he is the only one who has the most championships in his sport and holds all the significant records. But all three are goats in their respective sports.
