When Dolphins didn’t land Drew Brees, Nick Saban decided, “I’m getting out of here”

Through the latter half of Nick Saban’s second season as head coach of the Dolphins, we heard repeatedly that he was miserable in the NFL and that he wanted to go back to the college game. On Tuesday, Saban revealed the moment at which he claims that he decided the NFL wasn’t for him.

In comments published by 247sports.com, Saban said decided to leave the Dolphins after the team chose not to sign quarterback Drew Brees.

“Look when the Miami Dolphins were going to sign Drew Brees, Drew was coming to Miami when I was the coach there,” Saban said. “He was going to be the quarterback. That’s all we needed. We just went 9-7 and all we needed was a quarterback to be a playoff team. We were going to sign Drew Brees as a free agent. Dr. [James] Andrews operated on [his shoulder] and I went to Birmingham to see Dr. Andrews, and he said it’ll be fine. Our doctors failed him on the physical. [Drew] was there to sign with us. . . .

“So I decided right then when that happened that we don’t have a quarterback in the NFL, we’re not going to win. I’m getting out of here. I’m not staying here. I’m not going to be responsible for this. That doctor didn’t know his ass from a handful of sand. Drew Brees plays 15 more years, wins a Super Bowl, goes to nine Pro Bowls. And we didn’t take him in Miami, where he wanted to go. Some things you can’t control. When we left there nobody understood why. Well that was why. There’s always a reason.”

Saban’s incessant complaints about Dr. Don’t Know My Ass From A Handful Of Sand have never made complete sense. Saban ran the show in Miami. Saban could have overruled the doctor. Saban, if necessary, could have brought Dr. Andrews to Miami for a one-on-one meeting with owner Wayne Huizenga. Saban could have done something if he wanted Brees as bad as Saban now claims he does.

Saban’s official story on the subject isn’t surprising. By insisting that he wanted Brees and that someone else prevented it from happening, Saban creates the impression that the Dolphins would have been what the Saints became. And that not-so-subtle attitude undermines the special chemistry that Brees developed with Saints coach Sean Payton. Saban, a defensive coach by background, may not have gotten the same sustained excellence out of Brees that Payton did.

Besides, it’s not as if Saban checked out the moment the Dolphins chose not to sign Brees. The Dolphins instead sent a second-round pick to the Vikings for quarterback Daunte Culpepper, who suffered a serious knee injury in 2005 but who quietly had an excellent season in 2004, with a completion percentage of 69.7, 4,717 passing yards, 39 touchdown passes, and a full-season passer rating of 110.9.

The truth seems to be that Saban made a calculation that eventually blew up in his face. Instead of moving heaven and earth to get Brees (and, surely, if Saban had told Huizenga, “Sign Brees or I’m out of here after the season,” Huizenga would have signed Brees), Saban opted for Culpepper. And it didn’t work. Once it became clear it wasn’t working, that’s when the rumors began to percolate that Saban wasn’t long for the NFL.

But Saban will surely continue to push his own narrative on the subject, because it’s always better to be able to say that someone else didn’t know his ass from a handful of sand.

  1. Yeah, Nick doesn’t like it when the playing field is leveled. He only likes it when he has twice the talent of everyone else…

  2. I don’t care for college football and I don’t know much about this guy, but from what I’ve read he comes across as really unlikable. I can’t believe he’s so successful when he seems to make excuses when things go wrong.

  3. Dante Culpepper was great, as long as he was throwing the ball up in the air for Randy Moss to run under and catch it. Unless Randy was coming with him, signing Culpepper was a bad move.

  4. Tua will win more super bowls than Drew Brees regardless, even if he’s not quite as good, he won’t need to be. Miami will be stacked for quite awhile.

Miami’s only major needs long term are center and RB……..good luck to the rest of the NFL.

Jaylen Waddle, Will Fuller and Devante Parker are not Lynn Bowden, Isiah Ford and Jakeem Grant.

A lot of people have NO IDEA what’s coming.

  5. I can’t believe he’s so successful when he seems to make excuses when things go wrong.

    ____

But things rarely go wrong at Alabama since hes been there. Im not a fan of the guy or Alabama, but that program has been lights out the last 12 years.

Yeah he has the best talent, because the program is so successful, and hes an excellent recruiter.

  6. Saban quit, period. His doctor made the call to go with Dante Culpepper over Brees. Saban needs to stay quiet about the Dolphins and take ownership as men should.

  7. Yeah, Nick doesn’t like it when the playing field is leveled. He only likes it when he has twice the talent of everyone else…

    —-

This is true, but at the same time hes the reason they do have twice the talent. The 10 years before he got there, they only had 3 decent seasons and then got penalized by the NCAA for cheating.

  8. In a league where Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson were the quarterbacks on Superb Owl winning teams, this admission by Saban shows what a fraud he is.
Never place him amongst the best football coaches of all time. He’s a great recruiter for sure, but great coaches win consistently even without the best talent in the league. That he quit after realizing he couldn’t stack his team and would be forced to outthink opposing coaches, reveals what ‘elite’ college coaches truly are.

  9. “Saban’s incessant complaints about Dr. Don’t Know My Ass From A Handful Of Sand have never made complete sense. Saban ran the show in Miami. Saban could have overruled the doctor. This should really be the lede of the article. There clearly were doctors who thought Brees was fine so how does Saban allow the Dolphins to get torpedoed by one single diagnosis? That speaks to gross mismanagement by whoever was in charge… and Saban was that guy. This is either hindsight being 20/20 and him trying to rewrite history or his admitting to doing an absolutely terrible job.

  10. The truth likely falls somewhere in the middle. The owner may have been reluctant to shell out big bucks for Brees given the failed physical. Saban may have been ok with Culpepper as his backup plan so he didn’t issue an ultimatum to ownership at the time. Then seeing how Brees performed right outta the gate in NO angered Saban so he bolted after that next season.

    ===================================

We know exactly what’s coming. Many more years of watching Josh Allen dominate the AFCE with the Patriots trying to stay relevant in the number two spot. Miami will fall below Zach Wilson and the J-E-T-S and enjoy the cellar for a long time.

  12. I think you are assuming how much power Saban had in Miami based upon what he has become, not what he was then. Yes, he had 1 championship at LSU, but he book ended that with 5 and 3 loss seasons- failures at a school like LSU.

Sure, he was highly respected, but far from the god like figure he became AFTER he left Miami.

  13. Any coach could be great with the kind of talent Alabama gets every year. Kirk Ferentz is a better coach than Saban. Look what he does with about 1/10 of the talent every year.

  14. Why does Saban feel compelled to continue explaining his departure from Miami? Is his ego so fragile that he simply can’t handle the fact that he failed in Miami? So what! He’s not the first college coach to fail in the pros and he won’t be the last. What makes him arguably the greatest college football coach of all time (full control, my way or the highway, etc.) simply doesn’t play in the pros. Remember Lou Holtz? Great college football coach. Terrible with the pros. Chill, Nick, your act plays great and you’re a perfect fit in Tuscaloosa. You’re just not a pro coach. Sorry if you can’t accept that.

  15. When life gives you a lemon, make lemonaid.
Sabans version, when life gives you a lemon, cut down the lemon tree.

  16. Nick Saban had full control of the Miami Dolphins when he was there and now he wants to blame someone else on why he didn’t listen to Dr. Andrews and sign Drew Brees. Out of the eighteen players Saban drafted during his three year tenure, only three turned out to be decent players (Vernon Carey, Ronnie Brown and Channing Crowder). No players in his 2006 draft were remotely above average. Nick Saban is a first class jerk and nobody on earth has a bigger ego than him.

  17. Yes, Nick Saban wanted Drew Brees on his team but was powerless to make it happen just like Bill Polian wanted to draft Tom Brady and couldn’t either. give me a break…

  18. Ok Nick, so if we’re to believe you were that upset with not getting Drew Brees, what’s your excuse for passing on Aaron Rogers in the 2005 draft? You had the chance to get another great QB and you blew it. Who are you going to blame for that?

  19. Tua will win more super bowls than Drew Brees regardless, even if he’s not quite as good, he won’t need to be. Miami will be stacked for quite awhile.

Most ridiculous thing I have read this week. Tua will show himself for what he is this year and it will have Miami looking for another QB. If they have so much faith in him why are they still in the hunt for Watson? Tua was a mistake.

  20. Well Saban is not alone for pushing his own narrative, it’s done by corporations and media. How does anyone know that Saban did not take Dr. Andrews opinion (it’ll be fine) to the owner Wayne Huizenga. Saban chose Alabama so he could control it all without going to anyone including the Dolphin’s owner. Alabama will someday have a statue of Nick Saban on campus. Lol perhaps they have one already. Saban being a control person chose total control and ease of doing it all regarding the football program his way! Everyone makes statements for public consumption, not to be confused with the actual truth!

  21. Glad to see that someone isn’t buying this version of revisionist history.

  22. If you knew anything about Wayne Huizenga at the time, he was 100% hands off of the Dolphins operations. Saban had complete control to do what he wanted. There would have been no opportunity for Wayne to tell Saban no. Saban left because he found out that millionaire players are not going to put up with his crap. He had zero relationships with his players.
He would not let anyone in the building look him in the eyes as you passed him. If you happen to acknowledge his presence, an assistant would pull you aside and talk down to you about disrespecting Saban. That might work at LSU or Bama but not in the NFL.

Come on with these comments, guys. The greatness of a college coach is in GETTING that talent every year, in hiring the right coordinators to take advantage of it, and in fostering a dominating championship culture. ALL of which Saban does year in and year out.

None of that came free. Saban built that. Give the man credit, I don’t understand where all this negative garbage comes from, but I guess mankind is built to envy the guy at the top.

  24. This is Saban doing revisionist history to hide his failure. It is his way of protecting himself in case Urban has a good run in Jacksonville. Clearly his biggest coaching rival has an opportunity to do what he couldn’t

You don’t know anything. Josh Allen is OK, nothing that great. You won’t even win the divsion this year. Come back crying when you see I’m right. You had your year, you blew it, time is UP on your silly western NY dreams.

Good luck getting thru KC, Baltimore, Tennessee, Pittsburg, Buffalo etc. It’s nice to dream but time to wake up.

  27. Translation: Doctors are bad for football and it only takes one good Quarterback to be successful.

  28. Revisionist history. I remember vividly how much Saban liked and wanted Daunte Culpepper . The Raiders we’re trying to sign Culpepper to team him up with Randy Moss and the Dolphins we’re trying to beat them to the punch. It wasn’t until Culpepper didn’t play up to expectations and Saban realized that he made a mistake by choosing Culpepper over Brees that he wanted out of Miami.

  29. Some coaches are just better coaching college kids over grown men (with contracts & money) to say he’s a bad coach isn’t fair. He’s just one of many guys who just aren’t built for the NFL as a head coach. Most college coaches with National Championships in college don’t repeat that success in the Pros.

  30. Players on the team have said he made the call. He slammed his hand on a table and said we’re taking the big guy, in reference to Culpepper. I get it. I would have gotten on down to if I made such a big mistake, but this revisionist history is funny when lots of people have already told what happened.

  31. Nick Saban is an absolute genius of a coach. Before the Dolphins, he took LSU to the national championship. Miami missed the boat with Brees. And they missed the boat with Saban. Miami’s problem is the ownership. Stephenson is a lot like Daniel Snyder. No matter what talent is on the field, there’ll always be something detracting from it.

  32. Saban has the largest Napoleon complex little man snydrome of anyone who ever lived.

  33. Nick Saban ran the Miami Dolphins while he was there. He made all of the calls from top to bottom, right down to his Little Debbie snack cakes — no one else. All you need to do when it comes to went wrong in Miami, Nick, is to look in the mirror.

  34. Nobody knew Drew Brees would be Drew Brees after seeing his last year with the Chargers and then the shoulder injury.

  35. Now I’m hoping some other former Dolphins staff at the time speaks out on this to expose this fake coach lol. Sure Nick, and that doctor also sent a 2nd rd for Culpepper right? He realized this wasn’t going to be as cushy and easy as his college job and quit on the NFL, simple.

  36. I can only think of one guy who has consistently recruited better talent than Saban, and that’s Urban Meyer, and Meyer couldn’t even win as much as Saban. I think Jacksonville is looking at a big disappointment.

  37. Your assessment is spot on Mike. The NFL is the stain on Nick’s (there I said it Deion) resume and enough time has passed to where he can throw out his revisionist history and think that he can get away with it. Good job calling him out.

  38. Nick Saban was staring Aaron Rodgers in the face. They had the 2nd pick in the draft in 2005. After the 49ers took Alex Smith, he could have selected Aaron Rodgers but chose to take Ronnie Brown.

  39. Nick Saban wanted total control in Miami and he got it when they hired him. He made the decisions on players.
Nick says the best doctor to work on NFL players Dr. Andrews told him that Brees would be fine? Then he says team doctors disagreed, well he was the man making the decision to break the tie. Either he could get another opinion or take the advise of one of the doctors. He chose taking the advise of the team doctor! It’s on Nick, worse he had opportunities to draft Quarterbacks like Aaron Rogers and he took a back up running back instead!

  40. If he had Drew Brees with Ricky Williams & Ronnie Brown. That would have been a great combo, I think Chris Chambers was then too. But that Defense was terrible.

    __________

the 2006 Dolphins had Jason Taylor (HOF), Zach Thomas (Future HOF), Yeremiah Bell (Pro Bowler), Kevin Carter (Pro Bowler), Channing Crowder, Vonnie Holliday etc etc…. the defense was the strength of that team lol… the Dolphins would have been a SB contender from 06-10 with the roster they had. (BTW you missed Wes Welker on the roster as well)

  42. Can I get the same ability to re write history the way Saban seems to think he has? Instead of the bad relationships I had, the mistakes I’ve made.. can I just blame the team doctors and lie about who made what decisions?

  43. In college, it’s all about recruiting, and one man can dominate at that. In the NFL it’s all about scouting, and you have rely on others for that. Saban is perhaps the greatest recruiter of all time, hence the best college coach. The NFL is a completely different competition. It’s more of a QB league, as Saban was saying, so a great college coach can win in the NFL as long as he has a HOF QB. Like Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll have done, and Urban Meyer is about to.
