Mike Mayock: Jon Gruden and I can close the door and get into it and that’s fine

The Raiders have compiled a 15-17 record in the two seasons since Mike Mayock took over as General Manager. The club hasn’t been to the playoffs after a pair of late-season collapses, but Las Vegas should be better in 2021 after an offseason focused on defensive improvement.

But if the Raiders don’t get better in the coming season, some have posited that Mayock could be on the hot seat.

Mayock’s relationship with head coach Jon Gruden has been a source of speculation since the two joined forces — much like that of Gruden and quarterback Derek Carr. During a recent appearance on The NFL Rhodes Show with Lindsay Rhodes, Mayock described a partnership that’s focused on getting the right players to improve the team.

“Jon and I, it’s interesting, we’re both highly opinionated,” Mayock said, via Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “We see a lot of it the same way. We both like guys that love ball. We both like tough, physical players. We value intrinsically both tangibles and intangibles. But like every coach and G.M. in the league, we’re going to disagree on some people and that’s where it gets fun. Jon challenges me, I challenge him. We do it with coaches, we do it with our scouts. The ultimate goal is to get to the right player.”

Mayock also noted that while both he and Gruden are alphas, they’ve realized that sometimes it’s time to concede.

“When there’s an appropriate time for me to make a stance, I’m going to make one,” Mayock said. “Jon Gruden is the same way. So there are times when our stances may be at odds and we can get into it. We can close the door and get into it and that’s fine. I think the cool thing is … it’s gotten to the point where it needs to be where we can find a way to get on the same page and just ask what’s best for the Raiders. I think every day we get a little better at that.”

Mayock’s drafting record has been mixed with two years of results. Defensive end Clelin Ferrell has not lived up to his No. 4 overall selection in 2019, but fourth-round defensive end Maxx Crosby has been a gem from the same draft. The first-round selections of cornerback Damon Arnette and right tackle Alex Leatherwood also raised eyebrows in the last two years.

“At the end of the day, it comes back to eventually being judged by wins and losses,” Mayock said. “A couple years down the road, people will look back and say Mayock sucked or he didn’t and that’s OK. We have to believe in our board just like every other team has to believe in theirs.”

  1. Mayock is definitely on the HOTSEAT this year do to his Draft picks that not only have RAIDER NATION but the whole NFL Brass shaking there head in disbelief over some if not most of his moves, with goood to average drafts on defense the past 3 years we should have been in the middle of a playoff/Superbowl run for years to come but draft picks and POOR DEFENSE ruined any hope!

  2. After reading this it tells me their combined approach aint working. If what they view as good produces a losing record then one of both must be wrong. They should change their focus and look at the successful teams out there and emulate them. That may help. Plus, Carr is taking them nowhere. He is the Matthew Stafford of the west coast.

  3. So by concede he means Gruden gets his way and they make terrible decisions that Mayock will be the scapegoat down the road. Got it.

  4. Crosby’s a good find, but finding 1 decent player in 3 drafts… Stay that mediocre course….

    Boise Raiders, 2025.

  5. Mayock’s 15 minutes is about up. Sad part is he will go right back to being a draft genius on TV.

  6. This is getting very old for a fan of the Raiders for 50 years. Rinse and repeat for the past 20 years after they lost the Super Bowl.

  7. One thing that always makes me chuckle when evaluating coaches is how we do it. People loved Gruden on his first coaching stint, but they forgot he had Gannon, Rice, Brown, and a great Raider defense, who had a Heishman trophy winner at the corner position. Or when he went to Tampa and had multiple hall of Famers on defense. What happened to Gruden when he had to build a team or coach a team that didn’t include these players. I am not saying Gruden is a bad coach, but too often, when coaches have great players, we overestimate their worth.

  8. I think Mayock has done a solid job deeper in the draft. His problem is he gets too cute in the first round.

Like some GMs, I think he’d be better off just doing what the media mock drafters say in the early going and then applying his in-depth knowledge about all of the prospects in the later rounds.

Either that, or trade down if you’re in love with certain players who aren’t consensus round 1 picks.

Las Vegas wishes Carr was Stafford. With Stafford, Oakland would be a playoff team every year. Carr was good until the leg break & broken back the following season.

  10. Maybe…Gruden is overriding Mayock on the early picks with his relatively shallow knowledge of college players and leaves the later rounds to the guy who’s actually studied these players in depth (remember “Buster Skrine!? I LOVE Buster Skrine!!” from MNF?).

  11. It’s a QB league. There’s no mystery. The teams with the best QB’s win the most games and super bowls.

  12. Why does Gruden STILL continue to get jobs as a HC? Dungy built the Super bowl winning team, and the next year Gruden won his ONLY Super bowl! ON Dungy’s coattails.

  13. I dont believe that. You signed up knowing you were the minority partner in power between you and Gruden. You carry his water, until you’re fired. Which I expect to come after this season.

  14. Great combination and it will come together this year. So many organizations would love to have that combination. The future is VERY bright in Vegas!

  15. I think there is a rush to judgement on the Mayock picks, they all have had injuries, Cle, Damon, Jonathan, Jacobs has done well and they have found a quality back to spell him. The O-Line has aged, glad of the rebuild and let’s hope the defense can learn to get several 3 and out’s in a row for once…

The Defense has blown so many leads its pathetic. So let’s see what happens this year with much better coaching in place. As long as Richie I is healthy, I think we’re going to surprise people with Gruden’s pound the rock first, throw it to Waller second offense.
They have added some nice pieces in the offseason, Willie Snead is a pro and so is John Brown. Depth is important as they are going to take a lot of hits.
