For how long can Cam Newton hold off Mac Jones?

As the Patriots inch toward their first training-camp practice of 2021, one of the biggest questions arising from a significantly upgraded roster (especially on offense) arises from the quarterback position, where 2015 MVP Cam Newton and No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 draft Mac Jones highlight the competition.

Most believe Newton currently has the edge, and most also believe Jones eventually will become the guy. So how long can Newton hold Jones off?

Per a league source, multiple current teammates believe Newton simply isn’t the guy he once was. Given how spectacular he once was, that’s arguably the stuff of Captain Obvious. Regardless, the presence of those thoughts lays the foundation for teammates to have an open mind about the possibility that Jones may be the better option. And the opinions of the other men in the locker room go a long way toward determining whether the decision by the coaching staff as to who will play quarterback will be accepted.

The New England organization has high regard for Newton. If it didn’t, he wouldn’t have been re-signed after a 2020 season that started with promise but then became marred by a bout with COVID. Conversely, if it viewed Newton as a long-term answer, it wouldn’t have drafted a quarterback in the first round for the first time since Drew Bledsoe in 1993.

Newton’s drive, personality, and work ethic have helped fill the leadership void created by the departure of Tom Brady. But those intangibles become meaningless if not complemented by solid performances and ultimately wins. With a better array of weapons around Newton, the wins could come more frequently in 2021. And even if he’s no longer at the level he occupied six years ago, Newton could be good enough to help the Patriots return to the status of serious contender, which could keep Jones on the bench for most if not all of the 2021 season.

Ultimately, it comes down to Newton. How much better will he know the offense? Will he make better decisions on the field? As former Patriots receiver Julian Edelman remarked earlier this year, Cam works hard. He now has to work smart. If that happens, those teammates who know he’s not the MVP he was in 2015 may realize he’s still more than good enough to do the job.

It also doesn’t hurt that Cam has a career record of 2-0 against the quarterback who’s coming back to town in Week Four.

  1. My guess is that Mac will know the offense better than Cam in short order. Cam may begin as the number one, but I would not rule out Cam getting hurt as well.

  2. If you look over Newton’s career, you’ll see one good year (2013), one very good year (2015), and a bunch of mediocrity. If the Patriots are anything less than 2-1 going into the game against the Bucs, Cam’s in danger of getting pulled for the second half of that game if he plays poorly. If they’re 1-3 after that, which seems likely, I see Jones starting game 5.

Newton will keep the job by winning games. He’ll lose the job if he can’t do that. (much like almost any other QB in the NFL)

  3. So a rookie will know an NFL system better than a ten-year vet? Some of you just say anything. The main reason Newton was Belichick’s choice is because he knows this system from his years under Mike Shula who also runs a lot of the same concepts. Knowing the system wasn’t the problem last year. It was the same problem during Brady’s last couple of years there, the receivers stunk, especially without Gronk his last year there.

  4. The past few seasons, Newton’s arm has looked like it’s shot. He isn’t getting much zip on the midrange and deep passes. Maybe his arm is better now, but I wouldn’t bet on it. He can still use his experience and his legs to help the team, but it’s a passing league.

There is no concept, it is just “pulled the trigger fast enough”. If a QB can’t do it, the team simply can’t depend on those “easy” routes and “easy” throws” (Belichick’s believers think they worked because of designs and schemes) to score enough. Belichick had no clue what had been going on with Brady and asked Cam to do something that even Peyton or Rodgers couldn’t do.

If a QB can pull the trigger fast enough, the defenders will be still 2 or 3 yards further away when the balls reach intended receivers, the QB doesn’t have to worry about interception; the QB can throw 2 yards on 1st and 10; the QB can throw 4 yards on 3rd and 7; receivers will have space for YAC. As a result, the offense could score 3-10 more points per game, hence about 100 more points in 16 games, like in 2001.

  6. “pulled the trigger fast enough” solely depends on how QB is familiar with the formations and detect opportunities in advance.

Brady was able to do it because HIS “follow formation instead of receivers” SYSTEM under which he could beat defenders by 2/10th or 3/10th of a second. That is why he needed smart receivers who could see what he saw; that is why he needed his receivers to be at exact spots at exact time, because his eyes didn’t follow receivers but were on the weak spots of the formation.

The two “easy” throws to Fournette and Gronk in the middle of 3rd quarters of last SB against Chiefs are such cases. There is nothing special about throws or design, or concept, ANY COACHES CAN DESIGN THOSE PLAYS WITH BRADY.

  7. The most knowledgeable Pats fan on Earth said Stidham is the Future of the Pats. Could he have been wrong again?

  8. If no other QB can run the system then how did Jimmy G and Brissette go 3-1 while Brady was suspended? There was a reason no team wanted to sign Cam as a free agent, he is done as a starting QB.

Cam played like pro bowl in first 3 games.

  10. I think Mac will know the offense better than Cam, As long as Cam shows much improvement and is productive on the field then he’ll live to play another day on the patriots. His seat is hot now but the moment he starts to regress it’s only going to make his seat hotter. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mac is starting at the halfway point of the season.

  11. I know Bill likes to bring his players along slow IF HE CAN & HAS THAT LUXURY….However if a player has an unreal work ethic & can grasp the system & NOT LOSE the game for them, then I ALSO see Bill putting that person in the game rather than have him sitting on the bench if that player is well prepared to play…..
I honestly believe, unless Cam has a spectacular camp, Mac could win the job outright….& I PRAY TO GOD that he does!!!
