Ten criminal complaints are pending against Deshaun Watson

With Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson back in the fold (for now) and the team trying to trade him but wanting way too much given his current circumstances, Watson’s lawyer has shared with ESPN some of the details about Watson’s current circumstances.

Via John Barr of ESPN.com, attorney Rusty Hardin said that 10 women in all have filed criminal complaints against Watson. Two who have filed criminal complaints have not filed lawsuit against Watson. This increases the total number of women alleging that Watson committed misconduct to 24.

“We’re fully cooperating with the police,” Hardin said. “We’re fully cooperating with the District Attorney’s office and, when the criminal investigation is over we’ll fully cooperate with the NFL.”

Attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents the 22 women suing Watson, also provided a statement to ESPN on Monday.

“As of today, almost half of these women have given sworn statements to the police, and almost half have spoken to the NFL’s investigative team,” Buzbee said. “Both processes are very lengthy. We expect to provide further information to the NFL from all victims.”

Hardin reiterated his longstanding position that any settlement could not include a confidentiality provision.

“I do not want anybody to be saying that this guy paid off women to stay quiet and so, if there ever was a settlement of any kind, it would have to be public and therefore both sides, [Watson] and the women, would be able to say to the world at large whatever they wanted,” Hardin said.

It’s hard not to think that Hardin’s candor is aimed at getting the Texans to drop their price (supposedly three first-round draft picks and then some) to reflect the various uncertainties regarding Watson’s status. He could still be placed on paid leave. He could still face criminal charges. He could still lose anywhere from one to 22 trials.

Indeed, Hardin made it clear that he believes teams are ready to do a deal, in light of all current circumstances.

“Teams are ready to jump now if the Texans would trade with them, even while all this is pending,” Hardin said. There’s no question that teams, numerous teams, are still interested. The ball is in the Texans court.”

The onus is on the Texans to drop their price. If they do, perhaps the Broncos or Eagles or Dolphins (or someone else) will bite.

  1. Dude just needs to take a few years off and reflect on his actions, I believe in second chances, but right now nobody rooting for this guy.

  2. I have no idea if these allegations are true or not (obviously). But, allegations and statements are a long way from actual evidence. And no prosecutor is filing charges or going to Grand Jury without actual evidence. So, what else is there besides statements?

  3. I think we can put all this “trade” talk on hold for quite a while.
The other shoe is about to drop.

  4. Why the hell does Hardin have ANYTHING to say about potential trades? Does he represent the Texans? Absolutely ridiculous that he would comment on this.

  5. I guess Hardin has essentially co-opted all the normal duties of Watson’s agent at this point too.

  6. 24 now? TWENTY FOUR?

How many more victims need to come forward before Goodell/NFL take action, respond in any way?

  7. Roethlisberger suspended 6 games(reduced to 4) for accusations (including sworn statements) from 1 woman, no criminal charges. Elliott suspended 6 games (turned out to be 4) for accusations from 1 woman (including sworn statements), no criminal charges.

One score plus four women accuse Watson, at least 10 give statements, Watson suspended for….

  8. I’m not condoning Watson’s alleged actions nor am I saying I would want him on my team but one look at the history of the NFL indicates there would absolutely be teams willing to trade for him immediately.

  9. The NFL does a superb job of investigating these cases. They have the best private investigators available. The fact that there have been no suspensions speaks volumes. I don’t know anything about these allegations, but the NFL certainly knows everything about them. That tells me the case isn’t a strong one. Was Watson a perfect gentleman? Probably not. Did he do anything illegal? I don’t believe he did. America doesn’t have high standards when it comes to the way men treat women. Not to get political because it happens across party lines, but we’ve supported men who have behaved worse than what Watson’s being accused of, and he’s just a football player.

  10. How much of his time during season might have to be spent responding/appearing in court?

  11. Why should this guy be allowed to get paid for not playing? The “exempt” list should have different levels. This guy definitely should not be allowed to collect millions.

  12. I doubt their asking price is three 1st rd picks and then some. he was never worth that much before all of this, especially if you are paying him 40 mil/yr.

  13. How is this predator still able to even show up to camp. What other industry would allow you to come back to work amid an investigation into double digit accusations about you being a sexual predator. Looks like a clear case of Athlete Privilege here!

  14. In other worlds people use “options” Since no team would pay a lot for watson right now, any given team could offer something of value – something like a second round choice- to get him if his legal proceedings are cleared up. either way the option money is lost ,but that might be a good risk.

  15. Ten complaints? Sheesh. My man just trying make massages great again.

    Regards,

    Donald in Florida

  16. What team in their right mind would trade for Watson, given his current circumstances. The Texans asking anything more than a sack of ham sandwiches, let alone 3 first rounders for a guy that might not play for a long time is beyond ridiculous!

  17. Whoa, reading some of the comments here: what with Not Guilty until proven othervise?!
I’m not saying he is innocent, but can we hold back the dogs amd keep the matches in our pockets at his stake until a verdict is out? Please.

  18. The sooner these cases stop being tried in the court of public opinion and make it to a courtroom the better. Let both sides have their say, present their evidence and be cross examined and then let a jury decide. Watson can then either move on with his career or see it come to an end.

Indeed. They certainly knew everything about the Ray Rice incident. Superb job investigating. 2 game suspension. They only missed one thing. Or chose to ignore one thing. Mr. Rice never played in the NFL again.

  20. Ray Rice 2.0., If he is found guilty on any of the criminal charges, he is going to jail and his career is over.

    =========================================================================================

These aren’t just statements. They are statements from witnesses and victims. Also, when you have so many complaints of the same crime by different women that is both a pattern and a lot of evidence.

As far as nothing being filed it takes a long time to investigate all the charges from 12 women plus they’ll be questioning the other 10 who have filed the civil suit and they’ll be talking to as many of the other masseuses he used that they can find. This won’t be over any time soon.

  22. Sure, if they drop the price teams will bite but why should the Texans do that? Their not going anywhere this year so any help they get would be minimal as the majority of the value would be in future picks. If you think you can get 1 first in 2022 for Watson now but that if you wait you can get 2 or more 1st round picks in 2022 why would you not wait? At worst in a little less than a year from now you can still get that same singular 1st in 2022

  23. Stop putting my Eagles in the same sentence as this scumbag. I mean…At best he’s a scumbag. The way you keep floating him to different teams right after reporting he could be a mass R is just very weird.

  24. Philly is the perfect fit? Just can’t keep us out of your mind can you? A team in NE has an owner that literally paid for human trafficking but let’s bring up Philly. Murders happen outside other stadiums without people even noticing. Clown.

None unless he is criminally charged. First court appearance for the civil cases is set for February 2022.

  26. The dude flew in various massage specialists from different cities. Just dwell on that for 10 minutes over your morning coffee

Well considering at the time the Eagles seemed to be the only 1 with ownership ready and willing to allow the scumbag Michael Vick another chance in the league, why would you think this scumbag is beyond redemption according to them? Its logical to think the Eagles are the most likely or 1 of the most likely and willing landing spots

Kraft went to a happy ending massage place and received massages from middle age women. There was zero human trafficking involved.

  29. Houston should take whatever is offered for Watson and just move on. They will be lucky to find takers at any price with all this pending litigation.

  30. The hypocrisy on this message board just proves how twisted our country is. Social media judgemental decisions…. how sad.

  31. This is why the 10 criminal complaints seems fishy to me. 1. Why is Hardin even bringing up “trades”. 2. If 10 different people went to the police and filed criminal complaints against one person, wouldn’t that person be arrested immediately?

Probably not. An investigation would have to be completed, which could take some time. In a case like this, where the woman appear to reside in towns some distance from Houston, getting statements and checking them out is a tedious task.

In most states, once a prosecutor files criminal charges, he/she has 30 days to make any revisions or additions. No need to start that clock ticking until all the investigative work is completed.

Are you kidding me? Remember Ted Wells and #DeflateGate? They start with a narrative and ignore any and all facts that don’t align with that narrative. BTW, why has the NFL never released the PSI data they captured during the following season? Yeah, we all know why….

  34. Dude is really arrogant and self absorbed to think he should have been involved in helping pick the next head coach of the Texans. That’s not your job dude, your job is to throw a dang football.

As for the lawsuits and whatnot, where there’s tons of smoke there is generally fire. He seems very ‘entitled’, so I don’t doubt but what he’s guilty. If found guilty he should be given the Ray Rice treatment and black balled from the NFL. Unfortunately, however, some team will trade for him using the “it’s all about 2nd chances” garbage, when really it is just about money. The NFL needs to be renamed GREED.
