Texans reportedly are willing to listen to trade offers for Deshaun Watson

With quarterback Deshaun Watson showing up for training camp and with the NFL not instructing him to go home with pay, it’s time for the Texans to begin yelling “sell!”

That’s precisely what they’ve done, leaking to the league-owned media outlet that the team is now (and supposedly has been) willing to listen to offers for Watson. But the price, as the team has leaked to the media company it partially owns, will be high — at least three first-round draft picks “and more.”

Multiple teams had hinged any serious interest on Watson in Watson getting the 22 civil lawsuits against him resolved. Those cases are still pending, and the criminal investigation sparked by some of those same complaints has not yet been closed. Also, even if the NFL has not placed Watson on paid leave yet, that immediately could change based on new allegations or evidence.

So the question becomes whether any team would offer what the Texans want given the complications arising from the unresolved off-field issue. If enough teams come to the table, maybe they will.

The Broncos, Dolphins, and Eagles have long been believed to be the favorites to pursue Watson. By March, even more teams could be interested. The question for the Texans will be whether to hold out for what they want or to take what they can get.

  1. Imagine the PR needed for a team that trades (likely multiple first round picks) for Watson

  2. Three first round picks? Not likely. I can’t wait to see how the Dolphins fleece them again.

  3. The NFL is built on collusion. If the Texans ownership leaked this, they have also used less public channels to assure their billionaire counterparts the case is pending resolution and the criminal/NFL investigations are nearing closure.

  4. Texans are dreaming if they think teams will give that kind of compensation for him as is.

  5. The Dolphins missed the boat when they drafted Tua instead of Herbert. They have an opportunity to correct that mistake by acquiring Watson. I’ll take Miami as Watson destination.

  6. In classic Texans style they wait until his trade value is at an all time low to trade him.

  7. You’ve got to be kidding. Three 1st round picks + “more” for him. Exactly how many playoff games & Superbowls has he won so far to justify such a cost??? At that price & with his considerable baggage, good luck finding any takers.

  8. Three 1st round draft picks? That’s what the Texans may need to offer along with Watson for some team to take him off their hands

  9. I’m glad my Bears were able to get Justin Fields and avoid this whole fiasco. They were apparently offering the farm for Watson back in March.

  10. Broncos, Dolphins, and Eagles
    —-

Three bad teams who are perpetually looking for a QB and who will obviously trade for almost anybody.

  11. The Texans, per usual, are going to screw this up beyond belief. I was listening to the radio this morning and heard that the Watson case, if it goes to trial, will not be heard until 2022-2023 at the earliest because of the 4 year backlog in the court system.

That means whoever trades for him will not have this resolved for another 2 seasons at the earliest. Remember it’s only a civil case.

Texans need to decide if they want to hold out for the 3 1sts + and have to answer questions every week this season as they work towards another top 10 draft pick or get some value and put this in their rear view mirror.

  12. I hope any team that trades for Deshaun Watson gets burned.

  13. Time to begin yelling sell? They should have don that the second he demanded to be traded!

  14. Any GM that trades 3 first rounders and more in addition should not remain employed for very long thereafter. That’s a lot for a troubled player the league could decide to shut down to the exempt list at any time.

  15. Eagles need to wait and see what they have in Hurts. Unless the price comes down to a 1 and a package of lesser picks I’ll wait for the civil suit dust to settle and evaluate Hurts before giving up the future for him. You can’t ignore his numbers though, even with that OL being subpar the majority of the time he’s been there.

  16. It’s been several months and Houston’s criminal investigation is ongoing. That’s nothing but a bad sign.

No one is going to take a risk on him unless it was dirt cheap in particular with his attitude problems to boot.

  17. But the price, as the team has leaked to the media company it partially owns, will be high — at least three first-round draft picks “and more.”

He can be an exciting player to watch but even if the massage scandal never happened he isn’t worth that. His contract is huge and that combo is too high a price to pay for a guy that has proven he can get stats but not wins. I’m not a Tua believer yet but I would rather keep him than toss 3 1st round picks plus extras to Houston for the privilege of paying a guy one of the highest salaries in the league.

  18. If the Dolphins traded more than Tua, a first and a late-round pick it is not worth it.

  19. Texans, what clowns…wouldn’t trade him several months ago when his value was at his highest but now willing to trade him with his value at his lowest…A WINNING STRATEGY!!

  20. That’s a lot of trade value for a player that hasn’t accomplished much so far in his career.

Using your logic: Derrick Henry is just an average rb.. He is 6-6 in the playoffs and no SBs.

  22. Eagles don’t want him, end of story. They are rebuilding with their personnel already. I think he stays with Houston, his asking price is too much.

  23. In this day and age, why would anyone take a chance on this guy considering all that has come to light?

  24. The NFL is built on collusion. If the Texans ownership leaked this, they have also used less public channels to assure their billionaire counterparts the case is pending resolution and the criminal/NFL investigations are nearing closure.

Well stated and I could not have said this any better. There is no way the Texans leak this without knowing that this is somehow coming to a conclusion. To add to that, the NFL has made no moves towards the exemption list or any sort of punishment. Watson is allowed by the NFL to show up to camp to avoid paying the $50,000 a day fine. And if the Texans knows this and the NFL knows this then the other 31 teams know this as well…

  25. The Texans are high asking for that with all the baggage Watson is currently carrying. He would become an instant distraction for whatever team makes that trade

  26. The Texans have the worst owner, Cal McNair, and the worst front office in the NFL. McNair’s father was inept, but silver spoon son Cal is a joke. The Texans could have gotten a treasure trove of compensation for Watson in the early spring. They decided in true McNair fashion to play hardball with a disgruntled player in a situation they couldn’t win. Now they want to get rid of the player, but everyone knows they have to. They have no leverage and sadly even less brains.

  27. QBs with Watson’s ability are gold in the NFL. We know this. Not gives a city hope for a Super Bowl unlike 80% of the other starting QBs
But why would one team want Watson if the Texans don’t? Does the act of changing teams exonerate Watson in some way in the public eye? In normal circumstances surely the Texans would not honor Watson’s trade request, just like the Packers and Seahawks had no interest in moving their star qbs. It just doesn’t happen in the NFL as teams know they would be fools to trade a top 5 qb. It could honestly take 25 years to get another one.

  28. Nobody and I mean NOBODY is giving up 3 first round draft picks for him. It is not happening.

  29. But the Texans proved how right they are! They showed that pesky QB who’s boss!
I mean, that’s worth, at least draft picks and many wins, right?

    Screw these guys.

  30. Character far outweighs talent…..
No organization should be so desperate as to pursue that nightmare!

  31. If the Texans said they would take a 7th rounder for him, there are teams that would still look to negotiate a better (lower) deal. At this stage, the Texans have nothing to lose by floating what it would take to trade for him. If someone comes close, he is probably available. If not, then he plays for Texans or no one.

I suspect if it weren’t for his off the field “hobbies” he probably would have been traded for a haul by now.

  32. The Texans have whiffed on just about every opportunity to offload him this offseason and have (somehow) been given one last chance by virtue of Watson reporting to camp as planned. This is essentially an IQ test for their front office.

  33. 3 1sts? Sure thing. Just jump in the way-back machine to the day before this story broke.

  34. Howie, I know you have 2 first rounders and a conditional pick that could become a first rounder if your former franchise QB shows up this year.

But PLEASE don’t go near this mess.

Keep the three picks, give Hurts a year to show whether or not he can play, and if he can’t, use them to draft a QB.

  35. 3 first is not too much for a top 5 QB. However the PR dept. would be working a lot of OT. if Eagles or Broncos got him they would be in the top 10 teams this year.

  36. They’d be better off hanging on to him and trading him in the off season. They’ll be able to get a top 5 pick for him then, but if they trade him now he most likely improves his new team enough that the Texans are looking at a mid round pick at best

    _____
If that were the case, it would be a lot of people NOT playing in the NFL.

  38. Why not trade him straight up for Rodgers? That trade would put both teams in the super Bowl!

  39. Lets be realistic. He has more trade value today than he did after the stories started to break, because everyone was waiting to see if there was another shoe that was going to drop. There have been no arrests at this point nor have there been any criminal charges filed against him.

There may be a front office out there that is willing to gamble that nothing will happen here – or maybe even construct a deal to help fund this to go away (through settlements).

Remember – it only takes one team. And if there is nothing else that is going to come out about this (at this point), and he is in shape and able to play at a high level – there is absolutely a team that will be interested in trading for him. Look at the contracts players like Michael Vick and Greg Ellis signed….

  40. Does the NFL fine/suspend players for getting charged or convicted of misdemeanor charges? OF not, Watson should get picked up. The Houston looked into this and has not filed any criminal charges against Watson.

Houston is asking for 3 firsts and other undisclosed items.

Since it’s Houston, I figure that some team will get Watson for one first rounder and a handful of magic beans.

  41. Watson isn’t facing criminal charges. Even if he loses every case, he won’t be going to jail. It’s really up the the arbitrary nature of the NFL to determine how much time he will miss. It’s going to be very interesting to see which team will give up assets and take the PR hit to bring in a guy who’s not going to be immediately available.

  42. As an Eagles fan, I hope Jalen Hurts lights it up in training camp so that trading for Watson never even becomes a serious consideration.

  43. The risk / return tradeoff with DS is too questionable, imagine he’s convicted, sentenced to jail, and not able to play – who wants to take that risk???

  44. Has anyone considered that perhaps the Texans are STILL wanting to keep him in fold?

Yes, they might be putting up airs with the ridiculous trade demand to show Watson his value has crashed… and the best place for him is to remain with the Texans
