What did Aaron Rodgers really get from the Packers?

Our long regional nightmare is over. Aaron Rodgers is back. And at a time when some are twisting themselves in knots to characterize this as some sort of a major win for Rodgers, it’s not. It’s definitely not.

Make no mistake about it. Rodgers caved. Rodgers folded. Rodgers surrendered.

Once the restructured deal between the Packers and Rodgers becomes official, the Packers get their franchise quarterback. Rodgers gets (checks notes) the 2023 season of his current deal removed.

That’s it. That’s all he’s getting that he wasn’t already entitled to receive. Sure, they’ll convert a large chunk of his 2021 salary of $14.6 million into a guaranteed payment. That’s something the Packers automatically could have done in March, and which they would have done if he wasn’t making noise behind the scenes about wanting out. Besides, the guarantee means nothing. It’s not like they were going to cut him; he was getting that $14.6 million this year simply by showing up.

This vague, non-binding notion that the Packers will take another look at the situation after 2021 means nothing. The Packers ultimately will do whatever the Packers (a corporation, not a family-owned business) deem to be in their best interests. If the Packers decide not to let Rodgers go, they don’t have to. Also, unless this new agreement waives the ability to recover the $11.5 million in signing bonus he earns by playing in 2022, the Packers will have that leverage if he refuses to show up a year from now.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who broke the news of the deal between Rodgers and the Packers (and who recently had insisted that Rodgers is done with the Packers), tweeted repeatedly about “concessions” by the Packers when, in reality, the only concession came from wiping out the final season of the contract, three seasons from now. Schefter’s final tweet on the subject says that Rodgers has secured “the freedom to decide where he wants to play in 2022.”

But, again, he hasn’t secured that. The contract still runs through 2022. His freedom comes in 2023, unless Green Bay Packers, Inc. chooses to give it to him before then.

So why the mischaracterization of this deal as some sort of a win for Rodgers? Well,it’s probably hard to get a scoop like this without first agreeing to make it look like a victory Rodgers, even if it isn’t.

After everything that’s happened over the past three months, at the end of the day all it took to get him back was wiping out the 2023 season? And spare me the “they’ve made promises” nonsense. This is business. Any verbal guarantees Rodgers received as to 2021 or 2022 aren’t worth the paper they’re not printed on.

Bottom line? It’s a huge win for the Packers, and it’s also a big win for the cloud-shouting, get-off-my-lawn-yelling old-school football types who think the NFL is becoming like the NBA. Rodgers had a chance to further blur the lines between the two leagues, but as he dove for the goal line, he fumbled the ball through the end zone.

Or, to put it in terms Rodgers may better appreciate, he took one of the strongest stands that any elite NFL player ever has taken against his team, and at the end of the day he performed like Cliff Clavin on Jeopardy!

  1. To be clear: Rogers got more than one year of freedom from the Packers. He got three years off his contract as they cannot tag him for two years. So this is really about freedom in 2022 rather than freedom in 2025 which is a significant concession.

  2. I like how the climate change people are ignoring Rodgers’ use of a private plane instead of the starving pack mules the rest of us are supposed to use. Who do they think he is, a Texas state Democrat?

  3. Why do we think there is always a winner and a loser? Seems like both sides got something here.

  4. Maybe he needs to hire a recent mvp and his own agent Lamarvalous to negotiate his next contract. Rodgers I sold news

  5. I thought Schefter explicitly tweeted that his current contract will allow Rodgers to effectively opt out in 2022, meaning the Packers are free to trade him but he won’t be punished if he sits out.

This is essentially a franchise NBA player on a one year deal with a player option for 2022.

  6. I think it is pretty clear what the Packers were doing here . . . They wanted Rodgers for one more year before moving on to Love but also wanted to retain the capitol that Rodgers is as they get ready to move on. Next spring Rodgers will be traded and my bet is that he will still reap the Packers a pretty penny. Both sides happy.

  7. All the Packer fans that were ripping on Rodgers will no doubt now be singing his praises.

  8. It would seem to me the business between Rodgers and the Packers is between Rodgers and the Packers. Did I miss something? Is there an unwritten rule all players must be as financially greedy as possible, all the time? That doesn’t seem to be what’s happening here. Is Rodgers in trouble?

  9. “Our long regional nightmare,” lolllllllllll, you loved every second of this, come on.

  10. @georgiavol….the reason we feel there needs to be a clear winner/loser is cause people have forgotten how to compromise. Why the world is screwed up….no one wants to give an inch. My way or the highway.

  11. Scary how desperate the media is trying to backtrack from months of UNFOUNDED SPECULATION articles…

I remember the days when journalists actually had integrity didn’t jump to wild conclusions just to get the first “hot take”.

  12. It sounds like he got what Brady got in his last contract with the Pats. His freedom. Then he heads straight to the 49ers. Or the Raiders

  13. “but as he dove for the goal line, he fumbled the ball through the end zone.”
    ___________

This seems to assume he’d have been better off if he’d forced a trade but the reality is that would almost certainly have left him with far LESS influence than he currently has with the Packers. Nobody was going to trade for him as a long-term option. It’d have been a short-term play to try and quickly win a Super Bowl within a season or two. After that–win or lose–the team would have either moved on or asked him to take a big pay cut. And if winning means anything to him the odds of a trade partner being a better team than the Packers currently are was iffy at best.

  14. Rodgers got exactly (or very close) to what he wanted. The Packers drafted a QB 2 years ago to take his place, and Aaron was ready to move on. If the Packers aren’t sold on Jordan Love, and apparently they are not, then Rodgers can give them one last season.

  15. No, it’s not a “major” win for Rodgers. It’s a partial win for him and a win for the Packers as well. The only losers are Chicago, Detroit and Minnehaha, who will again be hoping to compete for a wildcard spot. I think everyone el… (checks notes) almost everyone else won.

  16. Doesnt matter what Rodgers got from the Packers. The Packers should feel fortunate they have Rodgers for at least 1 more year, because Jordan Love, if he was so good, the Packers would have gotten rid of Rodgers. The Packers should feel very lucky right now.

    ——-
You’re actually incorrect. He got ONE year off his contract. His contract went through 2023. And his current “re-worked” deal puts him under contract through 2022, which is ONE year less. What you MIGHT be referring to as far as the 2025 year is the speculation that the Packers offered a re-worked contract to keep him through 2025, but this never came to fruition in the first place. So, in effect, Florio is correct here in saying it only removed one year.

  18. I’ll take, “Headlines That Will Piss Off Chris Simms” for $500.

  19. When I finish this I will be pulling out my Packer jersey and cutting the number 12 off. Then I’ll start wearing it again, at least until they play 2 national anthems at the first game.

  20. Who cares!!! I`m so sick of hearing about Aaron Rodgers!!! He reported to camp so please be quiet! What else do you want!!!

  21. Rogers was mediocre the first two years at the helm. So trade him now for a fortune, trade Adams and Smith for a high payday, as well as any other players who think they have value and want out. Then give Love his two years to get on tract, as they draft a ton of high picks who they have for 4 or 5 yeas to pull it all together and win the big one. Rinse and repeat.

  22. The question is if he is truly committed to this coming year. He has been down this he knows he is missing a few pieces to the puzzle for his dream team. He will do everything to stay healthy and not worry about getting to the dance and be set for a team that is for next year. For someone that didn’t make any camps until now is not committed to anyone but themselves.

  23. This whole talk about “freedom” is really lame. Lots of Americans are not free from illness or financial insecuriy…..but are forced to hear this incessant noise about poor Aaron Rodgers., the one time SB appearance QB, and all his drama and feelings. It’s very pathetic. Stat man Rodgers is just not that compelling.

  24. I love that the Packers management team (Murphy, Gutey, Ball) did not cave to Rodgers and his demands. Yes, Rodgers got one year lopped off his contract, but the team got financial relief, Rodger’s services for at least a year, and the options to trade or release him after 2021. I would say it was well-played by the organization!

  25. @keivshu I think he’s saying that the Packers can no longer franchise Rodgers. Which would mean he got a year taken off his contract and the Packers can no longer franchise him for two consecutive years to hold on to him. That is where he’s getting the 3 years from. Has it been confirmed that he can no longer be franchised?

  26. Not sure what he got for honoring his contractual obligation and getting his $38M.

What WE GOT: 6 Months of Aaron Rogers gossip.

  27. What did he get? What did both sides get? They got time to diffuse the situation and find a way to come together for the long term. That’s priceless.

  28. The ‘deal’ reportedly includes an agreement not to apply the tag. That alone is a very significant gain and FAR from caving. No doubt it’s just a coincidence that inconvenient fact / huge concession from the Packers was ignored.

  29. After alienating his fanbase and teammates all off-season, we’ve all seen Rodgers me-first attitude. This guy will continue to put up insane numbers, but will also continue to pout and will undoubtingly force his way out after another early exit this year.

A 1-5 Vikings team with a depleted defense beat the big bad Packers last year 28-22.

How about we wait until the games are played before declaring them victories?

  31. “Our long regional nightmare is over.” – This made me laugh. Well done.

  32. It would really be fun if “father time” catches up with Aaron this year and he falls flat on his face. The the Packers can dump him 1 year earlier than planned. As they often say, best laid plans—–

  33. Wait until GM Rodgers starts making demands and pouts on field if not met.

  34. Rodgers is a wet noodle.

“I’m never playing for the packers”

Rodgers shows up and will now blame the media.

  35. Main thing is they can’t tag him, right? (Of course, said tags would be at about $35 and $45 mil a year, right? Guess that represents “punishment” on the NFL “plantation” as players sometimes call it)

  36. They got SOLIDARITY…..SOLIDARITY…

What the packers got is the same thing we got with tommy. More signing bonus money, and the availability to be a free agent after this season.

  37. I sure would like to see him battle an experienced Justin Fields for a few years before he goes.

  38. Meanwhile, Denver be like “uhh okay, I guess we’re rebuilding again this year…”

  39. Rodgers was playing the media even more than the Packers. He knows how the media will speculate and spin everything to get ratings and clicks. Some of us miss the days of newspapers and only the 6 o’clock news. Less BS.

  40. By not having the franchise tag available, the Packers can trade him in 2022 or only get a comp pick in 2024 if they don’t trade him next year. Also they won’t get much for him if they try and trade him to a team he doesn’t want to play for since that team only get him for one year and then a comp pick when he signs elsewhere for a new team. Rodgers actually holds the cards to get to a team he wants after this season.

Wishing, hoping, and praying works once in awhile. Keep up the good work.

  44. What am I missing, the Packers get Aaron Rodgers for 1 year, BUT, they get nothing in return? For 1 year of Aaron Rodgers the Packers give up 3 first rounders at the very least? It looks like Green Bay loses big time.

  45. Florio: Unless you’ve seen the paperwork, you’re guessing. How about stop guessing?

  46. I wonder if we’ll ever get the true details of the contract. Until then, I certainly won’t believe whatever comes from Schefter. His report is the only possible scenario he could put up on his dart board that wouldn’t make him look more foolish than he has already proven himself to be.

  47. Too funny. All the media members saying he was DONE. It’s clear Rodgers planted it on draft day hoping to be traded, which was virtually impossible. I can’t believe people thought he was magically gone get traded then.

  48. You’re actually wrong. Getting out of 2023 represents a year sooner for guaranteed full freedom. That’s absolutely worth something the Rog man. Also didn’t they agree to not tag? Doesn’t that represent another 1-3 years sooner for guaranteed full freedom?

  49. Seems the Pack came out okay in all this by getting Rodgers this year, some cap relief, and the ability to trade him in 2022. Rodgers may lose a contract year and being subject to the tag, but it doesn’t look like he has complete freedom to choose where he wants to play in 2022. I’ve mocked Gutekunst before so its only fair to give him kudos for this work-around.

  50. Love how some think that getting to the NFCCG two years in a row = “early playoff exit.”

  51. Good explanation. Hopefully for the fans sake the Org, who are cheap skates, keep there sanity and understand you got one more year then you must peddle diva boy to get some value and rebuild.
If they have dreams of him being there three or four more years, then really miss an opportunity to get some picks.
Personally I dont think they will get much for him after this season. He will be getting too old and no team wants to throw a lot of top future picks away on a old man. Besides there are a lot of young guns always coming out who can step in and compete. Rodgers doesnt give you much more then that.

    —————————————————————————————————————————————————–
I dont recall one team coming out of the woods to make that kind of offer. First, no team is going to give up that kind of capital for an old man. I would not be shocked that the Pack didnt privately ask that for him and no one bit on it. Your talking the teams future when you throw that kind of deal away. You better be one QB away from a super bowl to do that.

  54. They both got what they wanted. Rodgers will be traded after this season (unless they do a new long term deal which no one thinks likely). Yes The pack own him through 2022 but with 2023 voided and no franchise tag option – he becomes a free agent after 2022 – if they force him to play under the current contract. So after this year – they either trade him for the boatload of picks or play him one year and let him go as a free agent after that (not bloody likely).

  55. All of this drama and attention for a guy who has just as many Super Bowl wins as Jeff Hostetler, Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer.

Like they got rid of Favre instead of making Rodgers sit for 3 years?

  57. But don’t forget, Rodgers got the Packers to admit that they should not have decided to kick the field goal.

  58. Mike THRU this whole rogers the buffoon mess … he looks just like cliff … You called it !!! from the VERY BEGINNING …jeopardy how poignant in the end 🤔😅😅😅🤗

  59. As a rule I’m pro-player – but the longer this went the more I sided with the team.

I’d like to see the Packers name LOVE the starter and Rodgers the backup. What’s it matter….Rodgers is leaving at the end of the season anyway.

  60. Rodgers almost assuredly got concessions in this process, they’re just not the kind you put on paper.

Let’s pretend that Rodgers got no concessions. He just caved and came back to play football. Now, the Packers FO are not exactly a collection of geniuses, but even they know that this scenario would be absolutely toxic for the coming season. You can’t bully Rodgers into coming back and then expect him to play well and with passion.

He got some things that were important to him or he wouldn’t be there and I have to believe the FO is smart enough to know that they had to give up something(s) significant or the season would be a disaster.

Although there are no guarantees that it still won’t be a mess.

  61. Packer fans can take their framed pictures of Rodgers out of the trash and rehang them

  62. “So after this year – they either trade him for the boatload of picks or play him one [more] year and let him go as a free agent after that (not bloody likely).”
    ******************
And get no draft picks at the end of 2022.
All of this undercuts Florio’s one-sided view of what Rodgers got…

  63. It is a win for Rogers. 2023 wiped out, keeps the $11.5M he got for that year, and guaranteed no tag, with a promise to look at a possible trade after this year. In fact Mr. Florio, you have no idea to what extent that possible trade is “vague and non-binding. No idea. It also reduces 12s trade value. And don’t forget the “mechanisms” put in place to address his other grips. What are those exactly.

    ********
Congrats on that amazing regular season win.
That loss actually dropped Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers to 11-1 in the division since their pairing.
But, I suppose to a pathetic 7-9, 3rd place team, you celebrate whatever victories you can muster. 🤣

  69. The 13 TIME WORLD CHAMPION GREEN BAY PACKERS will be SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS again this season!

  70. The new restructure means that Rodgers will sign a new contract with either the packers or a new team after this season because there’s zero chance he goes into 2022 without guaranteed money in the future. No way the packers let him walk as a free agent in 2022 either.

So this new deal makes it far more likely he is traded after this year if Rodgers wants out. If Love looks shaky, Rodgers signs a new 4 year record breaking deal with Green Bay as long as they don’t piss him off, which is hard to not do with this sensitive, attention starved temper tantrum of a QB.

  71. I doubt it will happen, but it’d be funny as heck if Rodgers has his worst year of football.

  72. “The new restructure means that Rodgers will sign a new contract with either the packers or a new team after this season because there’s zero chance he goes into 2022 without guaranteed money in the future. No way the packers let him walk as a free agent in 2022 either.

It was the talking heads who drove this issue to a frenzy. Rodgers said NOTHING. To argue that saying nothing to the media is attention-seeking is a real stretch. Anything he did or posted got interpreted by amateur psychologists as ‘passive-aggressive.’ He and his agent drove a hard bargain and won whether you like the approach or not; it is a business and his future years at stake…

“It sounds like he got what Brady got …”
Not really Brady went to Lambeau and got a win to go to the SB for another ring.

  75. He gets free of the Packers sooner, just like Brady did with the Pats. About the time Brady retires, RODGERS will be the new Bucs QB!

  76. 49ers coulda had him in 2005 and after his draft day slide, Rodgers said the 49ers would “regret” not drafting him. I hope the 49ers eventually land A-Aron and he tanks on them on purpose while getting paid big bucks. That’ll show’em.

  77. What are the odds that Belichick tries to pick up Rodgers next year if neither one of the wins the SB this year?

  78. Since all the (talking heads) TV analysts have varying opinions, I’m going to add my own. Knowing Rodgers history since coming into the league, I think he is STILL interested in playing for his childhood team the 49ers.
With the situation in GB on shaky ground and Aaron’s sensitivity to business decisions, he wants SOME control of his future. My belief is he has been working diligently to land himself back in his home state of California. My crystal ball says he will land in SF and Jimmy G. will lose the GQ status to be “just another guy” in GB. Of course draft picks need to be included but that is the dream scenario for Double A-Ron. Back to great weather, quirky personalities and Hollywood stars….all of which Rodgers is attracted to. IF that should transpire, there is no doubt SF would have a Super Bowl or 3 in their future. Ultra-talented with a complicated personality he is a polarizing individual only people close to him REALLY understand. Hopefully he can continue to entertain us at the high standards he has set and rides into the sunset a HAPPY man!

  79. The most critical thing here is the “no trade clause” language. Who controls that? With a shortened contract, is the team in a better position to now make a trade with teams? I’m not sure if I wouldn’t eliminate the possibility of a trade soon to Denver or some other team.

  80. In a world where we are trying to use Athletics to teach our kids teamwork and how to put some things ahead of your own individual needs and what it takes to succeed as a team. And how team success hinges on unselfish Behavior it is great to have a very public role model like this demonstrate exactly the opposite. Thanks aaron.
