Packers told Aaron Rodgers they’d trade him, and then didn’t

To the extent that Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers returned to Green Bay with a verbal promise that they will consider trading him after the season, Rodgers has reason to doubt whether the Packers will actually do it.

As Paul Allen of KFAN said during my weekly spot with him on Wednesday morning, and as Chris Simms reiterated during our special Wednesday hiatus edition of PFT Live, Rodgers believes the Packers told him early in the offseason that they’d trade him, and then they didn’t trade him.

Rodgers didn’t mention that he’d been told he’d be traded during Wednesday’s press conference, during which he peeled the curtain back on his relationship with the organization. But that’s another factor in this dysfunctional relationship that points toward 2021 being the quarterback’s final year in Green Bay.

Remember, the catalyst for the Rodgers-wants-out reports wasn’t Schefter’s draft-afternoon report that he was apparently holding in his back pocket for whenever he deemed the time was right. The spark came from Paul Allen, who reported on the morning of the 2021 draft that the 49ers tried to trade for Rodgers, that the Packers refused, and that Rodgers was pissed off.

He still seemed a little pissed off on Wednesday, and he had no reason to pull punches. Even though he caved and showed up without getting much in return, he has the bully pulpit. On Tuesday, he showed that he’s willing to use it.

  1. Pack probably wanted a kings ransom which no one was going to pay.
And rodgers is still a diva.

  2. They may have said they would trade him but they didn’t say when. That could be next offseason or later.

  3. What say we pick up all this speculation again in about eight months?

Yeah but he is in Tampa Bay. Rogers isn’t even one of the top 2 QBs in Packers’ history

  5. I wish they had traded him. He’s in a union but thinks he can be in on management decisions? Aaron read up on how unions work!

  6. The Goat is the best to ever play the game. No one is even close.

Yes Tom Brady is the best to ever play the game and Aaron Rodgers is not even close.

I know, but this article is about Rodgers, not Tom Brady.

  8. Going back on your word gets around. And no free agents wanted to live in Green Bay BEFORE they were exposed as lying to players.

  9. “Rogers Believes that”. Did they or didn’t they, and if no one wanted to pay the asking price, then their not going to give him away. He is a bum.

  10. I would be upset too, however, they can still trade him after this season.

  11. Green Bay, so smart in most ways at running their team, insists on treating Aaron Rodgers like a normal player when he’s sensitive and holds grudges. Why?

  12. This guy had like 5 gift drives in the title game off Brady’s poor play and totally failed.

    It was the ultimate Diva-Off.

  13. If Rodger’s goal was to expose GB management as inept, I’d say he achieved his goal. And he barely lifted a finger to do it.

  14. it’s called leverage and you ain’t got it. be a man and report with the understanding that you’re not happy all damn season long. this wasn’t the year to demand a trade.

  15. He finally admitted today that it WAS about them drafting Jordan Love. That means that he was lying the whole time previously.

  16. Big missed opportunity by the Packers by not trading with the 9ers. Could have gotten your QB of the future at 3 and picked up other 1st rounders. Would have been a more exciting offseason for cheeseheads.

  17. Gonna be a longgggggg season in GB!

    ———————————————-

As a Packer fan I think you’re right. They’ll be playing into late January or early February.

  18. News flash … Rodgers has a huge ego and expects to be included in everything the Packers do. He’s going to play lights out to show the Packers he still has it which is fine. Drive up the trading price to somebody else, get the picks and players and save about 30 million dollars. Perfect.

  19. At this point no one is sure what he did or did not get for showing up. And I mean no one. The only thing we know for sure is that after drafting Love, they got a seldom used running back at #2, a blocking tight end at #3 and gave up #4 to move up to draft Love. That doesn’t make for long term employment if your the GM!

  20. Rodgers: I love this city

Also Rodgers: Green Bay isn’t a vacation destation.

A lot of lies going in in Wisconsin….

  21. This guy had like 5 gift drives in the title game off Brady’s poor play and totally failed.
    —–
He brought them back from a huge deficit and put up 3 TD’s (without Bahk) against a defense Pat Mahommes couldn’t score on. And he also outplayed Brady in the game. And Brady didn’t have to face the best D in the league. But sure, whatever.

  22. another union employee that wants to run the company
I dont see how an angry employee makes the company better.

  23. I don’t know about the rest of you but I have a belly full of Aaron Diva stories…

  24. If they do trade him then two top ten picks are going to be great in the next draft.

  25. Meanwhile 49er fans are still convincing themselves that Trey Lance is who the front office unanimously wanted the whole time…right. How many other QB’s did they try and trade for first?

  26. I’ve said all along Rodgers would be in training camp and playing for the Packers this year. Just mountains and mountains of petty BS and speculation since the end of the game where TB beat the Packers last season.

  27. Rodgers will play two years with the Packers……….so he can assuredly go to two more SuperBowls in a row.

If Paul Allen can write anything he wants about the future……..so can I.

  28. I long for the days of old when players were employed by teams and acted like it.

Now they are over paid celebrities who think they should be worshipped and believe that everyone needs to hear their personal ideology from their mighty platform.

  29. Yes it ia going to be a “longgggggggg” season in Green Bay. Won’t end until sometime in February, when they hoist yet another Lombardi trophy.

  30. i wish a rod would’ve just said this in april. the guy wants to help win, help recruit, same thing brady does. gm has final say, not sure what the big drama is about.

  31. Aaron Rodgers is certainly a diva, but in one sense I can understand how he feels. Since 2011, the Packers have not drafted a single offensive player in the first round–until they draft another QB last year. The front office doesn’t give him much help, and then lays the groundwork to replace him as he gets a little older. Further, they give him no courtesy call ahead of time. Maybe Rodgers hasn’t handled things perfectly, but I might be pissed off too.

  32. The GB front office may not be the best around but they aren’t dumb enough to trade him to the 49ers. That’s like saying they would trade him to Chicago or Minnesota. Never gonna happen. Only way he gets traded is to the AFC.

  33. Maybe the market isn’t as great for an aging QB that continually fails in the post season. Now now, don’t get mad and correct me, because you’d have to lie. He’s one of the greatest regular season QB’s to ever play the game. But to give up several first round picks and pay him $50 mil a year? Maybe GM’s want more than just regular season success. Oh, and there may be that attitude thing he has.

Last year was the year they had a chance. But we saw their team simply is not good enough. I’d definitely take the field if anybody wants to take GB against me.

  35. Oh they will trade him probably to a team like the Texans or some other
Cellar dweller like they did to Favre

But you do agree that AR didn’t get the job done down the stretch, and that your coach had zero confidence in him when he chose to kick that FG, right? I mean, there’s video of all that.

Brady threw interceptions on 3 straight possessions in the second half. GB scored a total of 7 points on those. AR doesn’t get any accountability in that? After the last two INT’s, GB had a total of 6 plays for -5 yards.

  37. To all those who think Rodgers is a diva, think about how Mahomes would have felt if he had to wait THREE years before getting a shot and had to give an ultimatum to get that shot?Who set this stage in GB? You have a historic qb and he rode the bench? I get the argument about having to ride the bench when you’re a rookie, but frankly, now, the fans should be right at the gates shouting some if the same things Rodgers’ is. You have an mvp qb who is on a historic pace and you still can’t get over the hump? Most players have to grin and bear it, the mvp doesn’t. The fans and mgmt know the “wilderness” years are back after he’s gone and the Packers want to hedge their bets they way the Cowboys did with Romo and Dak. Rodgers basically said, I don’t think so.

    ‐‐———————-

The Cleveland Browns have had that since their new iteration. Is that what you want or do you want someone who can do the fans a favor and put it to mgmt who aren’t getting it done? Are you satisfied with the job mgmt has done or do you think they can do better? If just being in the playoffs is good enough while Brady collects rings in your conference, then I see your point. If putting a player in his place is more important than getting over the hump, then I get your point. If sending the mvp packing to make sure the rest of the players “don’t get no ideas”, understand the msg you are telling potential free agents – don’t come here.

  39. The Packers probably threw up their arms dealing with this diva and said they would trade him out of frustration. They didn’t say when they would do it. They will trade him when and how it makes sense to.

  40. Everyone should appreciate this guy before he retires. Barry Sanders didn’t win as much as Emmitt but you still watched for the unique talent.

Only to lose yet another NFCCG if they even make it, while every other team is working their butts off right now drama is over taking Green Bay. The level of focus in Green Bay is not about football right now its all about the outside influences. All this drama has wrecked team chemistry all ready before the season opener.

I will always believe Brady has been a beneficiary of timing and luck as much as anything he brings to the table.

He walked off to a loaded team when his loaded team ran out of gas.

Actually, no. I actually think Rodgers and the Packers coach blew that game. I mean, if you read my comments, I said Brady threw 3 straight INT’s in that game, and Rodgers failed to get more than 7 points out of it.
