Plenty of vaccinated players and staff will still test positive for COVID in 2021, even if vaccinated. In L.A., Rams offensive line coach Kevin Carberry currently falls in that category.

Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters on Wednesday that Carberry was absent from practice due to the positive result.

“He has got COVID right now and we’re going to try to see how quickly we can get him back,” McVay said. “But he’s fully vaccinated, and we’re hopeful to get him back sooner than later.”

For vaccinated players and staff, return to action occurs after a pair of negative tests at least 24 hours apart, with no minimum absence. For unvaccinated players and staff, a mandatory 10-day break remains in place.

“I think we’re continuing to learn about this because he’s fully vaccinated,” McVay said of Carberry. “He has done everything the right way. The good thing is with the parameters around the protocols, if he’s got two negative tests within 24 hours separated, then you can end up returning. And we’re hopeful that that’ll be sooner than later. But you got guys like [offensive assistant] Nick Jones, [offensive assistant] Zak Kromer, have done a great job. We always collaborate as a coaching staff, so we’ve got a lot of great coaches that will pick up the slack. The good thing is what we learned from last year, he can still run a lot of the meetings from a virtual setting. There’s nothing like being physically present with guys, but he’s done an excellent job being able to adjust accordingly.”

Adjust accordingly. That mindset will continue to apply in 2021, even though many believe that the pandemic has begun to fade into the rearview mirror. It definitely hasn’t, and it looms as a potential threat to what widely is assumed to be a normal NFL season.

  1. The very nasty delta variant is putting lots of UNvaccinated people in the hospital. The Pfizer vaccine is is 88% effective at preventing that. Plenty of vaccinated people will get asymptomatic or very mild illness, but they recover quickly and without the major problems that the unvaccinated have. Covid is a very serious disease, and roughly one-fifth of unvaccinated people who get it will have long-term lung, heart, brain, etc. damage. Vaccination prevents almost all of this.

  2. This isn’t that complicated. The vaccine is not 100% perfect. However, those that are fully vaccinated are less likely to get COVID and those that do will likely only have mild symptoms and will be far less likely to be hospitalized, ventilated or die. 99% of the people who are currently being hospitalized, put on ventilators, suffering long term effects and dying from COVID are not vaccinated. And that includes people of all ages. A year ago this primarily affected people over the age of 75 or with underlying health issues. With the new variants, that is no longer the case. It now can affect people of all ages, regardless of how healthy they are. But hey…go ahead and play Russian Roulette if you choose. You’ve got nothing to lose, except possibly your life.

  3. Back to the drawing board on these covid vaccinations. They don’t seem as effective as they thought they were.

  4. The surge is overwhelming Baptist Medical Center in Florida, where 389 patients are being treated for Covid-19 — an increase of about 50% from a week ago. Of the new patients, 83 are on ventilators, fighting to survive.

More than 99% of those patients aren’t vaccinated and the average age is around 50

So they had a less than 1% breakthrough on vaccinated people. Apparently for some of you, unless it’s 0% breakthrough, then it’s worthless to get the vaccine. Go as the 83 on ventilators about that.

  5. 11 of 12 Washington Nationals that tested positive yesterday were fully vaccinated as well.

The COVID-19 vaccines work extremely well and have or will save millions of lives around the world, you just have a fundamental misunderstanding of how they work and the protection they provide. The 94-95% efficacy number doesn’t mean you are protected fully protected from any virus reproducing in your body the 94-95% efficacy rate means 94%-95% of vaccinated people are protected against developing serious cases of COVID disease/sickness and/or Death. 99.5% of people who are dying , incubated or severely ill in need of ICU care are all unvaccinated. The only cases of of vaccinated people who died due to COVID were the seniorest of senior citizens in their 80s/90s who had comorbidities and were in bad shape to start with .

  7. Based on the replies it feels like y’all are actively rooting for the virus so you can say “See told ya the vaccine didn’t work!”.

The vaccine is working and if you need further proof look at the areas with the largest numbers of infections and hospitalizations, its no coincidence they are also areas with low vaccination rates. Or you can look at the percentage of people in hospitals that are vaccinated vs unvaccinated.

  8. Yeah, the vaccine doesn’t give 100% protection, but I’m not sure anyone said that it did.

You’re less likely, to contract it, spread it or develop more severe symptoms.

If you want to argue we’re safer without a vaccine or we’re better off wearing masks indefinitely, go ahead.

  9. The vaccines are doing their job, they are preventing hospitalization and death.COVID 19 is now a disease of the unvaccinated, hospitalization rates have skyrocketed in states that have low vaccination rates.
Now that we have vaccines, it’s not the elderly who are dying, it’s those unvaccinated in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s .
So deny science, don’t get Vaccinated , all you’ve accomplished is prolonging the pandemic.
    Darwin was right!

  10. Vaccinated or unvaccinated you can still carry and spread COVID to the people with underlying conditions who maybe can’t take that vaccine… I’m sure it’s not people who are lucky enough to have good health filling up the ventilators with a few exceptions . COVID is still killing the people it was before the vaccine .Period.

No, COVID is killing the UNVACCINATED people. Deny that all you want, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s the UNVACCINATED who are hospitalized and DYING!
