Bill Belichick: Cam Newton’s our starter, but everyone has to reestablish their positions

A day after the Patriots drafted Mac Jones in the first round, their head coach Bill Belichick said that Cam Newton is “our quarterback” and that the team would see if Jones or Jarrett Stidham would challenge him for that role.

Back surgery has taken Stidham out of the running for the job and Jones hasn’t done anything to change Belichick’s mind about the pecking order. He was asked at a Saturday press conference about the timeline for naming a starter and responded by calling Newton “our starting quarterback.”

In a follow-up question, a reporter asked how that fit with Belichick’s statement this week that everyone is starting from scratch in training camp.

“Yeah, that’s right everyone does start from scratch,” Belichick said. “Again, we all have to reestablish ourselves and that goes for a lot of other players that you could name as well that I’m sure in your mind you think they are starters, and maybe they are starters and they probably will be starters, but they all have to reestablish their positions. That’s across the board for the whole team. That doesn’t just pertain to one person or position.”

Newton has plenty of practice time and three preseason games to reestablish himself as the starter in New England. If he can, Jones will start his NFL career on the bench.

  1. I’m loving it so far in terms of the competition for starting QB. Looking forward to the preseason games

  2. Yeah, Bill means EVERYONE has to reestablish — even him.

That means going from Super Bowl winning coach to lower-rung mediocre coach. Bellyache received excellent experience at his new role last season. Get used to it, Boston.

  3. From what I am hearing out of camp Cam might even pass for double digit tds this season…

  4. Being named the starter in July is meaningless. Come September, then it matters.

Ryan Dubose, as a Pats fan thanks for the laugh with your comment above. Let’s hope so…

  5. I would have advice for stidham and that’s not to have back surgery until ur career is over..now that he has..his career is over..back issues with surgery does not work..its the worst part of the body to get surgery on

  6. Cam leave, Pats fans hate you like you were the sole reason they weren’t good

I’m sure you’re one of those people that assumes Tom Brady also held the Rams to 3 points in the 2019 super bowl? Last time I checked it was Belichick’s defense that did that before Brady went front running to a Tampa Bucs team so stacked that Antonio Brown was the 4th receiver option.

  8. This Pats fan respects what Cam did in a tough situation last year. And BB’s comments are no different to what he said in pressers after the Draft: if anyone wants Cam’s job then, when they’re ready, they’ve gotta try to take it from him. Plus, the complexity of Pats’ offense means don’t expect to see Mac this year, barring injury.

  9. That’s part of the problem Bill. Hell I’d rather Mac Jones just be thrown into the fire to see what we have. Cam will suck with or without weapons.

Would Pats even make to SB with any other QB?

I am not sure if the defense could still hold against depleted Rams offense if Brady had played only 27 minutes and never gave Rams good field positions (that would be the case with Rodgers).

  11. I fully expected Cam to start this year … but I also fully expect if he does not improve from last year I expect Jones to be given a shot

Then you also have to admit that BB’s defenses choked away both SBs against the Giants as Brady left both games with the Pats in the lead. Worse than that, BB sabotaged the SB against the Eagles by refusing to put Malcom Butler in the game as his defense made Nick Foles look like Joe Montana

Would that also be a BB defense that allowed the Bills to go up 38-9 halfway through the third quarter last season? BB as a HC without Tom Brady behind center, 1 playoff appearance in 7 seasons with no SB appearance. TB without BB on the sideline, 1 season, SB win and SB MVP.

  14. Brady > Belichick
Belichick > Every other NFL Coach

I think this says it all

Belichick without Brady is Belichick of Cleveland Browns.

  16. Brady didn’t win SB in 2019 and it’s doubtful he would have won with a worse roster in 2020.

That is not even the point. The only time Pats won SB was when Brady did far far far more than you could expect from a QB with the cheap squad given by BeliCHEAP.

A lesser coach and the Patriots don’t win more than one game in 2020. No QB, no receivers, no defense and they still won 7. That’s coaching.

Every team that focus on defense wins 5 or more games, depending on the directions balls bounces. BTW, you think Cam can still rush lot of TDs in 2021 season?
