One of the top names left on the veteran free agent market found a home for the 2021 season on Saturday.

According to multiple reports, edge rusher Justin Houston has agreed to a one-year deal with the Ravens. Houston visited with the team earlier in the offseason.

Jeff Zrebiec of TheAthletic.com reports Houston got a $1 million signing bonus on top of a $1.075 million base salary. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports incentives can push the total value of the deal to $4 million.

Houston had 19 sacks for the Colts over the last two seasons and has 97.5 over the course of his career. The Ravens will plug him into a pass rushing group that also includes Pernell McPhee, Tyus Bowser, Jaylon Ferguson, and first-round pick Odafe Oweh.

  1. Am I reading this correct? The Ravens just got Houston for 2+ million? And if he balls out only 4? I’d consider this a win for the Ravens front office.

  2. This dude still has a lot left in the tank. He’s going to be a great leader on that defense.

  3. He’ll be lucky to get 7 sacks. He’s 32 and and has been average at best the last few years. There is a reason he was still available. Looks like his agent dropped his asking price.

  4. He looked overweight and slow in a Colts uniform. Ever since that recurrent knee injury in JC he hasn’t been the same.

  5. So Melvin Ingram got 4-5M from a team that was dying for cap space and Justin Houston was just signed for 2M. It just tells you patience pays in free agency. The Ravens seem to have mastered the art of signing the right player at the right price.

“Lucky to get 7 sacks…Average at best the last few years…There is a reason he is still available.” 2017- 9.5 sacks, 2018-9 sacks. 2019- 11 sacks, 2020- 8 sacks. 19 sacks the last two seasons while playing limited snaps. Did you not see how deep the edge rush free agent market was this season? Do you even watch football?

  7. Ravens have had a pass rush problem for a few years now. This guy’s best days as a near-every down rusher are probably gone, but if used sparingly, he could still be effective given the Ravens solid secondary coverage.

  8. Obviously no longer a premier pass rusher. But certainly worth a shot given the Ravens edge situation and the minimal cost.

  9. he knew that he would be a backup / situational pass rusher with the Steelers

Pats get Judon, Ravens get a 32 yr old Houston. Good luck with that.

Matthew Judon: $6.3M 2021 cap hit (13.6M APY)

Yannick Ngakoue: 13M cap hit (13M APY)

Justin Houston + Tyus Bowser + Pernell McPhee + Jaylon Ferguson + Odafe Owen + Daelin Hayes = $9.93M cap hit (courtesy S. Ellison).

Wink will find a way to keep Houston fresh and still get the sacks.

Remember when the Pats signed Adalius Thomas from the Ravens? Remind us how that worked out? Good luck with Judon!

  13. If one is honest, you have to commend the Ravens front office machinations in free agency. They are incredibly patient and create an environment where players want to be. Their locker room is generally a close knit unit with little if any controversy. They have the best front office in the league in my opinion. I’m being objective despite being a huge fan of the Ravens.
