It’s more clear than ever that unvaccinated players are at risk of getting cut

Even before the July 22 memo from the NFL that raised the possibility of forfeits due to outbreaks among unvaccinated players and staff, the risks of choosing not to be vaccinated for NFL players were clear. The July 22 memo served only to underscore the reality that teams have an incentive to include unvaccinated players among the 37 players on each team who find themselves without employment when the rosters drop on August 31 from 90 to 53.

It should now be crystal clear that, despite the rule that unvaccinated players can’t be released due to their vaccine status, it will be a factor in the final shaping of a roster.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, who lost three unvaccinated quarterbacks for a Saturday night scrimmage, praised the one who did the smart thing, and ripped all who refuse to.

“He’s out there,” Zimmer said of Jake Browning. “He’s available. That’s important. It’s important to be available in a team sport.”

In Washington, coach Ron Rivera has tried to appeal to his players by pointing out that his cancer bout from 2020 puts him at greater risk of a serious outcome with COVID. So far, not so good.

So here’s what’s going to happen. Personnel decisions will be made based on vaccine status. Any close question involving two players at the same position will go to the player who is vaccinated. How can it not? Look at Zimmer’s quotes. All things relatively equal, he’ll take the guy who has made the commitment to being available to his team.

Some players will remain untouchable. The Vikings, for example, won’t cut Kirk Cousins; his massive salary and cap number allow him to do the not-team-friendly thing without consequence. But some players who think they’re untouchable could be getting a rude awakening.

Players may not like it. Some may file grievances. Teams ultimately won’t care. (That said, it will be smart to not create a clear link verbally or in writing between roster decisions and vaccine status.)

Still, it’s hard not to wonder whether fear of getting released will move the needle for players who flatly refuse to get jabbed. If feelings regarding this issue have already become so hardened that men wired to do whatever a coach tells them to do won’t do this, they may not care about losing their livelihood over it.

For the coaches and teams (and league), they simply want the players to get vaccinated. It will be very interesting to see how many recognizable names get released over the issue as teams maximize vaccination rates — and whether those players quickly find employment elsewhere or instead learn that the league has decided collectively to turn its back on them.

That would be collusion. That could set the stage for a major lawsuit. It’s becoming more and more clear that the league and its teams simply don’t care.

  1. Makes perfect sense. Whether the issue is injury or COVID, one of the most valuable abilities any player possesses is availability. How did they use to say it? Can’t make the club sitting in the tub.

  2. The NFL is at risk of losing this household as a fan and supporter of NFL football. Freedom first. Logic and the facts will prevail. Play football or don’t, I will decide whether or not to pay any attention.

  3. Makes sense to me. If you’re not available, you’re no good to the team. Get vaccinated if it means so much to you.

  4. How players feel isnt the issue. How the NFL feels is the issue…and the only issue. If I played football in the NFL I would be vaxxed and would just deal with whatever possible long term risks might be there. Pretty simple to me when you have millions of dollars at stake.

  5. Players can get cut for many reasons. Yes, not being fully vaccinated could make it harder for you to make the team. That is life in the NFL right now. Don’t like it? There are thousands that are willing to take your spot.

I like when I see these people that are anti-mask, and need to go to the doctor. They whip that mask on real fast.

Or the anti-vaxxers when they are shocked to find out a unvaccinated family member has COVID. Or those anti-vaxxers that see someone close to them be hospitalized or die from COVID. They then want the vaccine quickly. May be too late.

These variants are thriving because there are plenty of unvaccinated to get and spread COVID.

  6. The unvaccinated should start their own league if they do t want to follow the NFL’s rules. They can call it the UFL ( Unvaccinated Football League ).

  7. I think it’s only a shame that like-minded members of regular society can’t also be cut.

  8. I haven’t seen any unvaccinated people at my hospital. Only vaccinated go figure

  9. Playing in the NFL is a privilege, not a right. It’s all part of that freedom thingy.

  10. I’m not a fan of the vaccine and I won’t be getting it myself but if it came down to keeping my job you bet your ass I’d get that stupid shot

  11. There are side effects to the vaccine. I heard about one guy that took it and now he thinks he won an election he lost by 7 million votes.

  12. Seems to me if an unvaccinated player is better than a vaccinated player.
The unvaccinated player will get cut.
Only hurts the team/fans in that instance.

  13. Kellen Mond (Viking #2 QB) is vaccinated, but got COVID. Not sure how long he’ll be out, but he should be fine.

Kirk Cousins is not vaccinated and was in the QB room with Mond. No clue what will happen to him.

  14. Freedom has parameters or we’d all be driving down the highway at 90 mph munching on a burger we stole from McD’s. But that’s not the real point here – the NFL has rules too (like it or not), and those teammates that abide by them make for a more effective team. Those that refuse to follow NFL protocols (like them or not) due to personal beliefs are putting themselves above the team and are selfish, lousy teammates. Simple as that.

The NFL will go on without you.

  16. It will be interesting to watch, but if a team has to forfeit a game because of an unvaccinated player, or has a number of players go into quarantine, then it will be even more interesting. Expect lots of fireworks in the coming weeks and months.

  17. Unless you are considered a star player.

But what happens if one of these star players (vaccinated or not) happens to be the patient zero in a teams outbreak (for the vaccinated or not). What happens to them?

  18. Freedoom…no one is forcing you to take the vaccine and no one is forcing an employer to keep you when you don’t. So, bye boo.

  19. The top Vikings players aren’t getting the vaccine. Cousins, Theilen, Sheldon Richardson, Harrison Smith. It’s only the bubble players and guys who have no chance trying anything to fulfill a dream. It’ll end up being the kind of story where the long-term health effects aren’t realized until about ten years down the line, but I’m sure the 60 Minutes Special will be really eye-opening.

Who is a coach gonna trust to be available on game day a vaccinated player or an unvaccinated one?

Considering the latest bad news that vaccinated people can carry as much virus load as unvaccinated not sure there is a difference!

  25. Those who won’t get vaccinated infuriate those of us who are. Incredibly selfish.

Except that the vaccinated person most likely won’t get sick and require hospitalization. For the unvaccinated person, all bets are off.

  27. What are the ingredients in these vaccines? Is it a big secret? And why is every vaccine manufacturer protected from any liability? Inquiring minds want to know

  28. Vaxxed son-in-law just gave the rona to the rest of the family, so I don’t think the vax will make one player more available than another. Considering recent reports of over 60% of cases being among the vaxxed population, it appears illness is still random.

According to a cnbc article the other day over 5000 fully vaccinated people have been hospitalized or have died from covid 19 so far, so unfortunately all bets are not off by any means at all.

Or risk losing your ability to procreate. Evidence is trending that erectile dysfunction can be a side effect in some men who get Covid.

  31. Have any players been hospitalized or died of Covid in the last 18 months? COVID is a risk, experimental vaccines are also a risk.

  32. Better to lose your job than your life. Don’t believe me? Google or duck duck go Mike Yeadon, former head of scientific operations at Pfizer.

  33. Considering that the front line doctors have reported over 45k deaths from the vaccine and that doesn’t include the complications from it……..they are also not granted funding or the ability to do autopsy’s on those that died directly from the vaccine. But what do I know….I just follow the science. The science I had to dig for because it’s not being reported.

People should really vet their sources. That article comes from a partisan hack website that regularly get’s blasted for posting misinformation. My guess is this is to drum up hits for that website. You aren’t following the science, not even a little bit.

  36. @eagleswin I consider you a hack before I’d consider medical doctors hacks…..they’re actually professionals in the field…..where did you study medicine?

Those who won’t get vaccinated infuriate those of us who are. Incredibly selfish.

I’ll let you in on a secret, those of us who won’t get vaccinated couldn’t care less what those of you who are think. In fact, we find your obsession with us fascinating, almost to the point of being humorous. Some Christians object to having aborted fetus body parts injected into their bloodstreams (look it up) and will never – under any circumstances – submit to your shaming, or any mandates. That’s why we have the 2nd Amendment. See we have a much higher authority than you to answer to, and that’s something you’re just going to have to deal with. Or not, it really doesn’t matter to us either way.

  38. @eagleswin not to mention that the medical doctors website that reports these findings is generated from entries all over the world….not just by a specific field of practice or a specific country. But, since you’re the doctor here…..I guess I’d better just yield to your response. Please, continue to enlighten me El dictator

  39. The irony of CNN truthers blasting others for using “partisan hack” misinformation is thicker than a McDonalds chocolate milkshake.

  40. I previously scoffed at players for claiming they were treated like slaves… But wow, were they right. These guys are getting treated like slaves by teams, they are viewed as pieces of property and nothing more, completely dehumanized with no individual ability to make a personal health choice for themselves. Watching a small group of people support this mindset is repulsive.

  41. If you are brave enough to take a stand, and NOT receiving the Vaccine for whatever reason…

Please, be Man, or woman enough to accept the consequences losing your job because of it, and do not cry if it happens.

    That’s all we ask.

Children can’t attend school if they aren’t vaccinated for MMR

  42. Players won’t get vaxxed, yet want greater safety measures in the game. They don’t want a 17th or 18th game for safety reasons but will get a shot to numb the pain and play through a ding. If you won’t Vax up for yourself, do it for your teammates

  43. As soon as I can fully trust a politician and a pharmaceutical company I will be vaccinated.

  44. Getting the COVID vaccine doesn’t make you smarter. It just proves that you are.

  45. You have the right to control your own body.

You have no right to play in the NFL.

It is time to start dumping the trash and to start finding real men who understand that this is a team sport, not one of 53 individuals.

I was one of the early vaxers in February. I am a diabetic. I had 18 hours of misery after the second shot. I have had zero issues since. Yes, I did this for myself first – but I also wanted to protect my 80 year old mother and my coworkers.

  46. Arrogant, Selfish and Stupid are those who will not get the vaccine. Another 100,000 Americans will die by the end of the year due to the unvaccinated. Cut them all. I’m a Vikings fan since 1969 — Eller, Page, Yary and Marshall…the purple people eaters. Cut Cousins, Mond, Smith, Richardson and declare a full rebuild. This variant is as contagious as the Chicken pox which means they will get it. 1,500+ NFL players have been vaccinated with zero reports of a single problem. 350 million+ Americans have been vaccinated …. THE VACCINE WORKS! Don’t be Arrogant, Selfish and Stupid — get vaccinated!!!!
