Xavien Howard: I hope it gets better, it’s up to Dolphins

In the statement he issued upon reporting to Dolphins camp, cornerback Xavien Howard said he wants a trade and that he showed up to avoid daily fines of $50,000 until the team moves him.

Howard left practice on Thursday with an ankle injury and it looked like that might be the start of a “hold in” that kept him off the field until the Dolphins granted his request. Howard was back on the practice field Saturday, however, and his comments to reporters later in the day were a bit softer than what he said in the statement.

Howard referenced his desire for a new contract when he said it is “up to the Dolphins” to find a way to fix the relationship. He also said he’s hopeful that can happen.

“Sure. I hope it gets better,” Howard said. “It’s a process. I’m hearing this and hearing that but nothing is getting done right now. Right now, I’m just here — out here every day, supporting the team and out here working.”

Howard said “I’m here” when asked what he’d do if the Dolphins neither trade him nor give him a new conract, but it does seem that acrimony will remain in the air until one of those two things comes to fruition.

  1. Let’s be completely honest here X, you’re not supporting the team, you’re saving yourself 50k a day in fines. You said it yourself that that was the only reason you showed up. Don’t try to sound like a “Team” player now.

  2. What team would give up a first round pick for him, pay him more money, then in 2 years go through this again?

  3. I believe his new agent wants to get paid more than he does and that’s what is preventing the two sides from finding common ground.

  4. 10 picks when finally playing in all 16 games and the guy thinks he is Mike Haynes.

  5. The contract he signed made him the highest paid corner at the time. This guy doesn’t understand that there will always be a ‘next guy’ who gets paid more.

  6. As a Dolphins fan, I am right behind Chris Grier on this one. I’d be happy to see him traded away.

  7. Chris Grier gave the inferior and medicore Byron Jones, 15 mil per.

There is no more money for Xavien Howard because Grier is a moron money manager.

Miami will finish in 3rd place behind NE and Buffalo.

  8. NE is going to be at the bottom of the AFC East. No quarterback, no defense, no running game, atrocious drafting. They might win four games. Maybe.

  9. What nicer place is there to play than Miami with no income tax and beautiful weather most of the time ? They could ship you to Cleveland or Buffalo where they have brutal winters.

  10. He doesn’t have chemistry with Tua. Miami should have moved him already.

  11. Sounds like he doesnt want to go anywhere. Add some incentives to his deal, everyone walks away happy

  12. It wasn’t popular at the time but I give a guy like Kirk Cousins credit fir sticking to his ‘year by year’ approach making as much as he could. Good for him to bet on himself and win. I remember the same with Flacco when he bet on himself and won the SB that year, then got paid the year after.

NFL guys should take shorter deals and max their money. Injury risk is there and I get it, so it’s likely just the 5% stud guys that complain and we hear about it.

    Sigh…..multi-millionaire problems.

  13. Isn’t this the guy who is suspected of having an accomplice shoot up his ex-agent’s house? Grier better watch his 6…

If Miami really wants to punish him they will move him to your Jets

  15. 2 years ago a guy who had played only one full season in his career was given the largest contract extension in CB history. That player then promptly tore his ACL and missed all but 5 games the following season. Miraculously… the team that made him the highest paid CB in NFL history (since surpassed) brought in another highly paid CB to play along side him. Because this other top tier CB talent was playing next to him.. the oft injured player could suddenly play with less stress, got to stay healthy.. and had the best year of his career! Did he thank the team that made him the highest paid CB in history before he earned it? Nope! Instead he started attacking the value of teammates and demanded a trade if they didn’t pay him even more! Lets all stew on this for awhile shall we?
