Kellen Mond isn’t vaccinated, despite a report that he is

Kellen Mond has a chance to ingratiate himself to the Minnesota coaching staff, a way to ensure he’ll be available for every practice and every game. With starting quarterback Kirk Cousins inexplicably committed to an anti-vaxx approach, Mond could have fueled his eventual climb to the top of the depth chart. But Mond, who otherwise oozes a full and complete commitment to all things football, didn’t get vaccinated.

Despite a report that Mond had tested positive despite being vaccinated, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune now reports that he’s not vaccinated. Mond currently is dealing with the effects of the disease.

“He’s got COVID,” offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak told reporters on Tuesday. “He’s sick.” Kubiak added that it’s a “tough situation” for Mond.

The fact that Mond is’t vaccinated and tested positive, coupled with two other quarterbacks (Kirk Cousins and Nate Stanley) having close contact with Mond and not being vaccinated themselves, caused all three quarterbacks to land on the COVID reserve list. The situation has left coach Mike Zimmer apoplectic.

“I just don’t understand,” Zimmer told reporters on Monday. “I think we could put this thing to bed if we all [get vaccinated]. But it is what it is.”

So how will Zimmer feel if he loses Cousins before a key game?

“Probably won’t be happy we lost the game, first, and I probably won’t be happy we could’ve prevented this,” Zimmer said.

He has every reason to be upset, because there’s no good reason not to get vaccinated. There’s every reason for a professional football player to get vaccinated. Players line up out the door for Toradol shots in order to play on Sundays despite proven long-term health risks, but they won’t get a vaccine that keeps them available and that is far safer than Toradol.

Make no mistake about it. Plenty of players who aren’t vaccinated are going to end up being cut. For those who are untouchable, it may not happen this year. However, the moment their skills slip or the cap numbers outweigh their contributions, they’ll get no benefit of the doubt. They’ll get no favors. Because the opted not to do everything they should have done to advance the collective health of the franchise and to ensure maximum availability for the 2021 season.

  1. What is Nate Stanley thinking? A 7th round pick QB in 2020 and they drafted another one this year. Nobody will pick you up on waivers given the situation this year. I guess a career in football is something you would rather not have.

  2. The judgement of so many people is totaly blinded by these conspiracies its a human tragedy.

  3. I truly hope people will educate themselves instead of allowing politics to drive medical decisions. oh well.

  4. Weird. Zimmer has such public disdain for the unvaccinated players in his charge, yet he has a history of coddling domestic abusers throughout his career.
    Sad.

  5. Really, really dumb move by Mond. His not getting vaccinated has created a big problem for the Vikings and they will no doubt remember this. His inaction is a huge red flag on his commitment to the team. Cousins has pretty much punched his ticket out of town as soon as the Vikings can dump him. So selfish, so foolish.

  6. Kellen Mond clearly by not getting vaccinated, didn’t want to deal with chance of getting severe side effects like stroke, blood clots and myocarditis(Inflammation of the heart). These side effects are happening in young, extremely in shape athletes.

So those very rare side effects outweigh the vast statistical evidence that the vaccines are effective, and currently the only realistic option, at stopping the pandemic??

  8. These clubs are privately owned and can make the decision to vaccinate or NO PAY.

  9. The Vikings should call up the Broncos and say you can have Kirk Cousins for Teddy Bridgewater and a 2nd round pick.

  10. I would cheer loudly if the Vikings decided to send a message by cutting Cousins. Knowing the vaccine was going to be an issue, Cousins should have done the right thing and opted out when he had the chance during the off-season (same with Adam Theilen and Harrison Smith). Instead, he’s selfish for not getting it – which now puts the rest of his teammates at financial risk for missing a game check due to forfeit.

  11. Hey idiot. Get vaccinated. We need a replacement for when we dump Cousins who will cost the Vikings games.

  12. Also cut Stanley now. He’s the fourth QB and unvaccinated. He is taking up space.

  13. So here is what the Vikings should do, trade any and all unvaccinated players that you can. You are not going to win this year with these idiots any way, part ways with the rest that you can’t trade. Hope to reload next year with a smarter more committed group.

  14. As someone earlier in this thread referenced, “allowing politics to drive medical decisions” . . . our VP said she wouldn’t take the vaccine if the former president was involved. If I’m not mistaken, these are the same vaccines that were being developed during the previous administration, but now they’re advising us to get the jab. I got the vaccine, but I’m sure glad politics weren’t involved anywhere along the way. Right?

  15. So anti vaxxers, do you take any medications? Do you know the laundry list of potential problems each medication presents? But I’m sure you still take them right? I’ve never heard so many moronic statements in my life

That is a total fabrication. What she said was the if Trump forced the approval of the vaccine BEFORE THE TESTS WERE COMPLETED, she wouldn’t take the vaccine. If you recall Trump pressured the FDA to approve the vaccine before the election for his political gain. Luckily intelligent people prevailed and the vaccine wasn’t approved (for emergency use) until all the test data was analized.

How many of them went from research, to development, to testing, to essentially mandating in 7 months?

    I’ll wait for an answer.

The fastest vaccine approval ever was 4 years. This one has been 7 months. You have new side effects popping up, talks about changing the ‘recipe,’ talks of a 3rd or 4th shot needed …. all things that usually take places in the YEARS of research and development.

It’s disgusting that people try to force this on people. It’s should be everyone’s choice. If you want to get vaccinated, go for it. Theres nothing wrong with getting it. If you choose to not get it, there’s nothing wrong with that either. It’s your choice. The people making it political are the people trying to force you to get it.
