Art Rooney: Steelers’ goal is to extend T.J. Watt before the season, don’t know if we will

Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt is heading into the final season of his rookie contract and wants a long-term deal. Steelers President Art Rooney II says he’d like to make that happen as well.

But Rooney said he simply doesn’t know whether the two sides can find a deal they both think is fair before the regular season starts.

“We’d like to get T.J.’s deal done, if we can, before the start of the season,” Rooney said, via Steelers.com. “That’s the goal. I don’t like to get into those details in terms of the discussions, but we’re going to try to get it done by the start of the season if we can. I try not to get optimistic or pessimistic. I’ve seen these things go so many different ways over the years. We’re just going to do our best and I think both sides want to get something done so that’s always a good thing.”

Watt has been sitting out for most of the Steelers’ training camp practices, apparently not wanting to risk an injury before a deal can get done. If a deal doesn’t get done, Watt will either hit free agency or get the franchise tag in March.

  1. Steelers don’t like guaranteeing money. I’m sure this will go over well to a guy expecting a lot of it

  2. What’s nice about Watt is that he won’t get lazy once he gets paid. He has a solid work ethic.

——————————————————————————————Obviously this is Baker Mayfield’s burner account , lol .

  5. As a Watt he will be hurt soon and overpaid as Pitt needs a new qb, OL and coach.

    Long way down.

  6. Depends if he wants a lot of $ or to play with a real competitor – Steelers are set up for a big decline

  7. How is the Stidham era of dominance going, touchback? Still think he’s going to the HOF?

  8. Cam Newton, Good Lord. The Patriots need a QB. And a defense. 13 or 13 losses for them this season.

    Get it?

Cam had a rough season, but at this point in their careers even Mike Tomlin would take Cam over Ben and his noodle arm. If Ben makes it to Halloween the Steelers will be fortunate

  10. Hahaha! Tomlin would never consider Newton, he’s done. Roethlisberger’s arm is just fine and you know it.

Back to your own board, little man.

  11. Franchise him one time and then let him walk. By then Steelers will be in need of a lot of help on offense. They won’t be able to afford the luxury of having the highest paid player on the team be an Edge

Never used the word “dominance” or “era”. I like Stidham and Jones as prospects because they fit the mold.

NE wins the division either way with any semblance of an offense this year.

Then why did Ben average just over 6 yards per attempt last season? His arm is shot. He won’t make it to Thanksgiving

  14. You mean to tell me other teams have contractual considerations with their star players? It’s not just the Packers? Good to know.

  15. You may want to consider the amount of dropped passes, but that would require some thought and effort.

  16. The Steelers have had some stubbles lately with their best players (think of Bell) but over the long term have always kept their very best in the fold. Watt will be a Steeler all the way into Canton. The defensive’s strategy plays into his ability and will get him a lot of attention in the coming 5 years

A lot of people on other teams need to get hurt for that to happen but you wouldn’t wish that on anyone….oh wait you would. More games watched will help with your predictions which right now are a constant source of amusement….thanks for the laughs.

  18. They better be ready to pony up because he’s gonna want to he the highest paid Defensive player in the league.

  19. nhpats, worry about your own team. You’ve got no QB, no running game, no defense, sorry special teams and a head coach who can’t draft or win without Brady.

    Good luck.

  20. Ben took 5mil less. JuJu and Alualu could have left and made more money elsewhere. Playing for a organization that has the culture and competes for titles year in and year out matters to some competitive athletes. Pitt will lock TJ up shortly!

Steelers don’t have big declines. Haven’t you been paying attention the last 50 years?
