Edgerrin James: I started with gold teeth and ended with this gold jacket

USA TODAY Sports

Edgerrin James unveiled his bust Saturday night, revealing his signature dreadlocks. It doesn’t show his gold teeth, but James referred to both during his 10-minute Hall of Fame speech.

“Perception isn’t always reality. It definitely wasn’t my reality,” James said. “People looked at my gold teeth and dreads and were shocked and surprised I had never been arrested or spent time in jail. Some people told me that you can’t have gold teeth and dreads and be accepted in the NFL, but I never listened. I always knew who I was: A great football player, a great father, a proud Black man, a lion, and this was my mane, which many of those doubters later discovered once they got to know the real me. Times have changed. Look around the league, look at some of the young stars. As a matter of fact, look at my Pro Football Hall of Fame bust, rocking the same dreads they said I shouldn’t.

“My closing message: Try to represent the real you. Follow your dream, aim high and create the life you want to live. And to all those who have judged prematurely because of their appearance, the way they talk, where they come from and in the minds of many should be locked up in prison, I represent us. I’m forever immortalized, locked up in the Canton Correctional Institution.”

James then opened up his Hall of Fame gold jacket, which lists his Hall of Fame number. He was the 336th man inducted into Canton.

“Inmate number 336 in the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” James continued. “I started with gold teeth and ended with this gold jacket.”

A finalist four previous times, James finally has his rightful place in Canton. He was part of the Centennial 2020 Class that had to wait a year for their induction because of the pandemic.

James, 43, ended his career in Indianapolis as the franchise’s leader in rushing yards (9,226) and touchdowns (64).

Colts owner Jim Irsay served as James’ presenter.

  1. A travesty that this hack got in the HOF before Fred Taylor. I can’t think of one highlight run in his whole career and he played with Payton Manning and Marvin Harrison, among others.

  2. How is this guy in the HOF and Corey Dillon isn’t? Dillon played on god awful Bungles teams and has a ring.

  3. “A travesty that this hack got in the HOF before Fred Taylor. I can’t think of one highlight run in his whole career and he played with Payton Manning and Marvin Harrison, among others.”

Don’t get the nickname of “Fragile” and you’ll probably get in the Hall of Fame sooner.

  4. It’s the Hall of Pretty Good now. Solid career but I watched it and it was nothing remarkable.

  5. Edge was a beast u guys are hating. I also agree that Fred Taylor should be in too. The hall of pretty good shouldn’t be directed at edge, that should towards jerome Bettis hines ward and a bunch of other GOOD players.

  6. Edge was a great player and a great human. I’m not sure he should be Hof though. I don’t think he was ever the best rb when he played.

4: Players who have rushed for 1,500 yards at least four times in a career. Talking about first-ballot Hall of Famers – Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson – and James.
7: Players with 2,000 total yards from scrimmage at least three times, including James. The only players with four are first-ballot guys: Marshall Faulk, Erick Dickerson and Walter Payton.
3: Players who have led the NFL is rushing in each of their first two seasons. That would be Eric Dickerson and Earl Campbell, first-ballot inductees, and James.
7, again: Players who have won back-to-back rushing titles since the 1970 merger. It’s James and six first-ballot Hall of Famers Tell me again how it’s a travesty..Maybe if Taylor didn’t miss 23 out of a possible 48 games from his 2 through 4th seasons.

It’s now the hall of remember when you would draft that guy for fantasy because he was the defacto coat tail rider in a loaded offense in a dome.

Maybe Priest Holmes or Jamaal Charles or even LeSean McCoy should be in the HOF?

    Sad, really.

His QB? Peyton Manning. His WRs? Marvin Harrisoj and Reggie Wayne.

And no one can name a key play or postseason performance.

He was also terrible on grass.

Learn the game. The last sport that should point to stats is football.

  10. He was HOF material to start his career, but after the ACL injury he was nothing special.. not OF material imo but thats been out the window with Bettis, John Lynch, ect.. just who the media likes

  11. The original Mr. Thousand/thousand, Roger Craig should’ve been in a decade before this guy. What a shame.

  12. One of the most overrated players in the NFL. Lucky he had Lord Manning. Not deserving imo.

  13. Like a lot of others recently inducted, he belongs in The Hall of Pretty Damn Good- not the Hall of Fame which should be for players who transcend the pretty good level…..

  14. When Bettis got in that was the end of it for me. James and guys like Corey Dillon are just as deserving as Bettis for enshrinement.

  15. He only got stats because he was the least threatening player on his own offense and defenses were 100% keyed up to defend the pass. Joseph Addai came in on that offense and looked just as good. Edge did his job, I’ll give him credit for that. He was probably the 6th best player on his own offensive unit though.
