A Michael Thomas trade seems inevitable

USA TODAY Sports

Last year, as word emerged of friction between the Saints and receiver Michael Thomas, PFT reported that the Thomas camp was trying to get other teams to make a trade offer for the player. No one did.

This year, it feels inevitable that someone will.

The relationship between Thomas and the Saints seems fractured, as evidenced by Thomas posting a tweet implying that the team tried to damage his reputation. The Saints, of course, have no reason to make Thomas look bad. The Saints didn’t want the ugliness to go public, as evidenced by the fact that they managed to keep under wraps for months the consternation arising from Thomas delaying his ankle surgery. No, the Saints lose if Thomas takes a hit to his reputation; that will make other teams less inclined to give the Saints full value for his services.

So where will Thomas go? A reunion with Ohio State coach Urban Meyer makes plenty of sense. Given that (per Jeff Duncan of Nola.com) the Saints are exploring trade options at cornerback and could make a play for C.J. Henderson of the Jaguars, the possibility of Thomas for Henderson plus a pick or two could make sense.

He’d leave behind $8.9 million in cap space for 2021, and the team would take a $22.7 million cap charge in 2022. It’s hardly an ideal outcome, but with the situation deteriorating between player and team, the Saints may have no choice but to move on.

  1. Jets are looking to move Mims, so maybe they could work something out for Thomas. Obviously not equal talents lol

  2. With all the talented WRs coming into the league each year, why would any organization trade anything worthwhile for this high maintenance diva.

  3. Sounds like Thomas has made some little kid decisions at work, and now it got so awkward he wants to leave and start new somewhere else.

  4. Thomas is a self centered diva. He alienated future HOF teammate Drew Brees. He clashes with Sean Payton, and is all about Michael Thomas. After his fantastic season a few years ago he got paid and begin reading his own press. He is cancer and teams should be really careful when considering adding him to their team. I seriously doubt he will ever regain the momentum he was building before contracting the “Me” disease.

  5. Why does Terrell Owens come to mind? I guess wherever Thomas lands, he should keep his suitcase packed. He won’t be staying long. Great QB’s make their WR’s look much better. Therefore, a team with a great QB won’t have any interest in Thomas. Chances are, they’re doing fine with whatever WR’s they have. Teams with lousy QB’s might be interested. They might be thinking a WR will make their lousy QB play better. In other words, only a poorly run franchise would want anything to do with Thomas, at this point.

  6. I don’t think you get that much for him. You can get a good WR in the 1st or 2nd round and he just surgery on his ankle. That contract is too much and he is 28. WRs, especially tall ones, tend to fall off big time before they even hit 30.

  7. What is he worth? To a team with an established QB1 and playoffs likely makes sense. But he’s not an easy fit it seems so does a team with a young QB worry he’ll add discord to a locker room if things hit a bump? Brady’s group seems ideal without the financials but I think that precludes it. Rams have no picks. Jags are a bad bet to make the playoffs so will he really be a happy camper? Particular kind of set up I think is needed for him to have a happy ending somewhere new.

  8. Nobody in their right mind would touch his current contract….
    Good luck Saints!!!

  9. For NFL players, a high degree of transparency traditionally applies to health issues that affect a player’s availability. As to COVID-19, which directly affects their availability, unvaccinated players routinely choose for little or no transparency.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson demonstrated that mindset, talking about the lengths to which he’ll go to avoid an infection while also refusing to address his reasons for not getting vaccinated.

But, really, what’s personal and private about things that could directly impact the ability of a player who earns many millions of dollars to play football? These are fair questions, especially when the anti-vaccine position taken by the player cuts so sharply against the clear preferences of the league and the team for which Jackson plays.

    Blah blah blah….

  10. Unless it’s Julio, Moss, or Calvin, those type dudes, I’m not paying a receiver big money. Need to be able to dictate and bust coverages with your speed, and even then, I’d think about it real hard and wouldn’t pay them crazy money.

  11. Aaron Rodgers and Devante Adams to the Saints, Michael Thomas to the Raiders … Raiders and Saints both send picks to Green Bay. OH! And, GO VIKINGS!

  12. Team members appear smart enough to not say anything, but I can’t help but wonder where his popularity stands with them about now. I also think several of the current saints back up receivers(Calloway,Harris,Montgomery, maybe even lil Jordan Humphrey)could be considered starters with some other teams.

  13. Good luck trying to find someone to take on a 22 million dollar broke wide receiver

  14. I’m afraid I have to disagree with Thomas ignoring calls from his coach and team trainer. That behavior is unprofessional, and there is no way around it. He is right that the team is trying to damage his reputation. How did the story get out that Thomas didn’t respond to his coaches? A coach only leaks the information. One thing about the NFL, coaches, does not leak information unless they get the word from the Head Coach, GM, or the owner. Of course, to have someone try to damage your reputation, you actually have to be perceived as a good guy. Last year proved otherwise, and if the story about shunning his coaches is true, then you damaged your own reputation.

  15. The number one question other GMs should ask themselves when considering trading for Thomas: “Why should I believe he won’t do the same thing with my team?”

  16. Trade him to the Jets. Any player as ungracious as Thomas needs a cellar team to dwell in.

I’m sure also think the Jets could offer a ham sandwich and get Alvin Kamara.

  18. I’d be wary of trading for Thomas. Look how Jimmy Graham fared away from Brees and Payton.

  19. As a Saints fan I’d take a cheeseburger for him. I k ew he’d turn into a diva! Byeeeeee

  20. What’s up with WRs… their ego seem so fragile. If like not one of them has ever had pick their own switch and go to the woodshed.

  21. Im sorry you don’t trade Henderson plus for Thomas and that cap hit. Thats way to much and heck id imagine a 2nd or 3rd gets it done at this point.

  22. Lol you pay him all that dough and now you want to trade him. We all knew he was a punk years ago, sucks for you that you didn’t.

  23. If he really blew off his entire team for months to delay a surgery so he could enjoy his off season rather than rehab and be healthy for the season.. I would never want this guy on my team personally.

  24. You guys don’t want to see anybody in the NFL make money like the it’s coming out of your pocket.

  25. This turd is so radioactive that he glows in the dark. At his price, and with his ego, this locker room cancer is totally unmarketable, even at a major discount.

Time to just cut him and move on.

Why does Terrell Owens come to mind?

    =========

Good question. One is a flash in the pan, the other is the 3rd-most productive WR in NFL history, 5x first-team All Pro, in the HOF.

These days the players go straight to diva status without bothering to establish great first.

  27. 11 yards and a cloud of dust. Would be better with a QB that didn’t have a degenerative shoulder or the two headed monster they have now.

  28. Coach won’t allow one player to bring down the team, see Jimmy Graham. In interviews; players talk about family, culture and being able to be themselves. Maybe it’s time to see his trade value. Maybe he is more like his Uncle Keyshawn than we thought. The Saints are great at drafting hidden gems. Find more like Colston, so underrated. Geaux Saints! ⚜️

  29. There are plenty of teams with the cap space to take Thomas one.

The Saints, OTOH are already $35million over for 2022. They certainly can’t take an additional $22m cap hit to trade him now.

They’re stuck with him for at least one more year.

    Sorry about your luck.

  30. Colts have the cap space. They also don’t have a true number one right now, ty Hilton is still good but nowhere near where he used to be.

  31. Here comes Le’Veon Bell 2.0. Create havoc on the team that made you a multi millionaire to get more money from another team. Yeah, that always works out well.

Hope we can get him in MN. We need a real #1 wideout.
    —————–
Although I’m sure he’s instructed his agent to do whatever it takes to get him to Minnesota (which is the dream destination for all players), I don’t see that happening, unless he wants to see his minutes limited to garbage time. But then, being the team to beat in the NFC this year, is so much more talented than the competition that they will have such huge 2nd-half leads that the entire half will be garbage time. Unfortunately, that means that Cousins will be sitting at that point, and he’s probably the main reason that Thomas wants to come here. This has always been a problem in the past and will continue to be one in the upcoming years. There is just so much pure talent on this team, at every position on both sides of the ball, that some very good players will have to ride the bench. It will be impossible to keep everyone happy.

Not really, he hits the cap for $24mil if he stays or dead money of $22mil if he is traded/cut. You actually improve your cap position slightly by getting rid of him.

What your saying actually isnt true. In march of this year Thomas restructured his contract lowering his cap number to 10.1 as the Saints turned part of his salary into a signing bonus which pushed his cap hit higher in the future. With the restructure the saints take a dead cap hit of 32 million with a release/trade so they would lose 22 million in cap space since he currently accounts for 10. It’s simple math 10-32=-22
