Marcus Mariota “absolutely” monitors QB landscape for potential starting opportunity

When Marcus Mariota signed with the Raiders in 2020, some thought he could eventually take over for Derek Carr as the team’s starting quarterback — much like Ryan Tannehill came in and took over for Mariota with the Titans.

After a year with Las Vegas, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards. Carr continued to progress under head coach Jon Gruden, putting together arguably his best statistical season. Mariota took a pay cut, staying with the Raiders for another season.

But he hasn’t given up on the idea of being a starter again.

Following Las Vegas’ Sunday practice at Allegiant Stadium, Mariota told reporters he “absolutely” monitors the quarterback market with an eye on an opportunity.

“It is my goal [to be a starter again], so I do keep tabs on what’s going on,” Mariota said, via Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “For us as players, it’s kind of important to see what the landscape is. That being said, I enjoy this team. It’s a great organization to play for.”

At least for now, the one obvious opening would be with the Colts — though it’s still unclear how long Carson Wentz will be out following his foot surgery. The quarterback’s initial recovery timeline was 5-12 weeks, but Indianapolis will know more about how long Wentz will be out once he begins his rehab next week.

If Wentz’s recovery timeline turns out to be on the longer end of that spectrum, the Colts could potentially be in the market for Mariota’s services.

  1. Um…I could name at least three better options than Marcus Mediocre as a full time starter.

  2. Honestly I wanted Mariota in Miami, I thought he could do what Tua does, maybe even better. That #5 pick we spent on Tua has to come to fruition. I believe in the kid, but when I think of lefty QB’s the only successful ones were Steve Young, and Mike Vick.

  3. I have my doubts that Mariota wants the pressures of starting again. In the mean time he’s saying the right things as a backup.

  4. The Colts or Saints..

Sean Payton needs a guys who can protect the ball, make good throws AND run when plays break down… Mariota (with good coaching) could be a far greater option then the 2 duds the Saints are trying to force where they don’t fit!

  5. The problem for him is that I don’t think anybody is monitoring for him to take one.

    Ken Stabler

Don’t forget The late great Kenny “Snake” Stabler and Boomer Esiason, both lefties and Stabler is a Hall of Famer.

  8. Mariota had his reasons for sticking around, even though he took a pay cut. I believe this will be the only time during his career that he’ll be in the same offensive system 2 years in a row. Every QB loves Gruden’s system. There’s somebody wide open every play. He also must feel that he’s the best QB on the team, and if given the opportunity, he’ll take advantage of it. I could see Mariota taking over at some point, if the Raiders don’t get off to a great start.

  9. Good lord, the Colts are going to go with Eason. Stop trying to throw every quarterback on that team.
