Packers “willing to work through the season” on Davante Adams contract

After Packers wide receiver Davante Adams said in July that he deserves to be the highest-paid receiver in the league, General Manager Brian Gutekunst said he agreed but that there were different ways to determine that status.

Getting to a point where the Packers and Adams view things the same way will be essential to sealing a deal that keeps Adams in Green Bay beyond this season. The Packers aren’t putting any deadlines on getting to that point.

Gutekunst noted that he and director of football operations Russ Ball worked out a new deal with left tackle David Bakhtiari during the 2020 season and said that the team has no organizational policy of cutting off contract talks once the season starts.

“We’re always open to the conversations, we don’t shut things down for the season,” Gutekunst said, via Zach Kruse of USAToday.com. “I know some teams have done that in the past. Russ and I don’t think that’s how we would do things. We’re open, like last year with David, we’re willing to work through the season to get things done.”

Gutekunst expects to need the time. He called the Adams negotiations a “long process” and there’s no guarantee that things will come together during the season. Given Aaron Rodgers‘ situation, that could set the stage for a pair of big departures from the Packers come next year.

  1. Best way to re-sign Adams is to give Aaron Rodgers a seat at the table when personnel decisions are being discussed at the close of training camp as cut-down day approaches.

  2. Honestly, I wouldn’t pay this guy that kind of money until he proves he’s the same WR without Rodgers. Favre and Rodgers made a lot of WRs look good in GB and then those WRs went elsewhere but were nowhere near the same caliber player.

  3. That’s part of doing business. The Packers have demonstrated a long term ability to “do business” very well…..despite unpopular decisions. They always seem to make things work one way or another.

  4. “There are different ways to determine” who the highest paid receiver is…”
That quote may shed some light on why Rodgers is frustrated with The Packers’ front office.

  5. Rogers is gone next year for some decent draft pic capital, so Let him go & get the 3rd round comp pic…. Between all that & existing pics as well as draft capital you’ll save for the future, you can build a team around Love that will be competitive for years to come….

  6. The Packers will be in rebuilding mode next year. I don’t know how they can fit a long term deal with Adams into the salary cap.

How they can keep Aaron Rodgers contract next year is nearly impossible and adding Adams to the mix makes is doubly impossible, bad wording but you get my drift.

Both players could be in Denver next season.

If you don’t believe it, check out the Packers salary cap situation for 2022. No it can’t be worked out, cuts have to be made.

  7. Gute has said all along the extension for Davante will get done at some point, but that it may not be until the offseason. Bakh got paid and Davante will as well. It is not a question of will it happen, just a question of when.

Looking forward to the preseason game on Saturday with the Texans coming to Titletown. A ton of players will be fighting for roster spots. It won’t be easy making this roster. A guy like WR Malik Taylor may be the final WR on the roster because of he excels on teams(STs) 211 special teams snaps last season.

I expect J-Love to play at least 3 quarters. It is very probable that Aaron will not play. 3 stringer Kurt Benkert will get some late game duty depending on if they decide to play J-Love the whole game or not.

  8. He would immediately become our #1 WR if the Vikes could sign him. Justin and Adam could fight it out for #3 behind Dede.

  9. It will be tough to convince Adams to stay with the MVP HOF QB leaving next year. An elite WR is heavily dependent on the quality of the QB.

He would immediately become our #1 WR if the Vikes could sign him. Justin and Adam could fight it out for #3 behind Dede. ————————————————————————————— According to Ariani he would be your #3 WR and play on special teams. Seems like a really expensive #3. Or maybe unknownvikingfan’s statement is more accurate.

  11. Seems more like the norm than anything innovative. Most contract negotiations that are broke off at the start of the season are broke off/stopped by the player as they usually say something along the lines of wanting to focus/not wanting any distractions.

  12. It’s a good bet that Davante Adams won’t sign with the Packers and will test free agency.
Everyone — including Adams — knows the Packers are going to have big cap trouble next year — and Robert Tonyan is on a 1 year deal this year, so they will have to fork over a lot of money to keep him, too.
The only way they will be able to keep both of those guys is if they trade Aaron Rodgers, and Adams will want out if Rodgers isn’t there.
The bottom line is, this is the Packers last shot at winning a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers as their QB. Next year’s team is going to look a whole lot different.
It’s almost impossible to stay a contender for as many years as the Packers have done it. Very few organizations have done it over the last two decades — namely the Pats (who are finally going through a total rebuild), the Steelers (who have also taken their lumps trying to get back to the top, and the Packers (who will be in the situation next year the Pats were in when Brady left). Really, that’s about it.

  13. Ok….just to correct some of the ignorance and nonsense. Adams value is NOT dependent on Aaron Rodgers, he put up great numbers while playing with Brett Hundley for gods sake. Adams is NOT a diva, he’s right to maximize his pay when the window is open and he’s in his prime. To all the shots at Packer administration (especially from genius vikings fans), be careful throwing stones. GBP isn’t the only team trying to navigate the cap. Hhhhhmmmmm, do ya wonder if Minnesota doesn’t wish it wasn’t in such a hurry to resign Kirk Cousins?? 31-million a year for a precisely average QB,….who might also cost them a game or two because he’s an anti-vaxxer idiot. Also, Gutekunst is right, there are many ways to measure “highest paid” at any position, but Adams will be that at some point in the next 10-months, and he’ll likely keep that title for 2-weeks to 3-months. Packers signed Aaron Jones, David Bahktiari and Kenny Clark—why would anyone think they won’t sign Adams??

  14. I’m starting to get concerned that GB is gonna slump hard after these defections. A long rebuild ahead. Maybe inevitable for an org that had the incredible fortune of landing two consecutive HOF QBs.

  15. Russ and I don’t think that’s how we would do things.
    __
The don’t know how they do things. What a clown show.

  16. A cautionary tale for the Packers is playing out in NOLA. Adams is very similar to Thomas, not fast but good route runner. Both Thomas and Adams have had great throwers getting them the ball 15+ times a game. Thomas was a workhorse until he got his big contract and overnight turned into a diva. Adams is starting the diva talk before getting his big contract. If the Packers pay Adams and Rodgers is gone, NOLA 2.0 is almost certain.

  17. Odd, I was thinking now that Adams knows Rodgers wont be there next season, I was wondering if he would indeed sign a new contract or extention and it sounds like the answer is no, he is going to wait and see. No Rodgers, no packers.

Just say no Davante, Green Bay is a toxic environment.
    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Oh sure. There are very few players that would want two NFCCG appearances in a row, and likely a third. Most players would prefer to languish. You’re dead-on.

Doesnt work that way if they let him walk. They get so so compensation. Why the pack over an over again dont foresee this and trade people for real value is a poser I’ve never understood. They let so many people go to save a buck rather then be pro active and make moves that benefit them.

Come to Minnesota Davante! Would be a good 3rd WR and special teams player.

Maybe they don’t re-sign Adam’s and maybe Rodgers is no longer there. If Rodgers leaves they’ll get something for him. Perhaps they draft that No.1 receiver he’s always wanted! Problem solved. The “leftover” team will still be among the youngest rosters in the league. Top five youngest. Love may be under center and it’s likely somebody will step up into the No.1 WR role (somebody always does.) One thing for certain; they will not be in a rebuilding mode.

  22. ”Honestly, I wouldn’t pay this guy that kind of money until he proves he’s the same WR without Rodgers.”

    —————————————————————–

So, unless Adams shows that he is just as prolific with a much less seasoned and talented QB you don’t think he has proven himself? Adams has been the league leader for multiple years, so that is not reasonable standard. If Green Bay wants to rebuild that may be a good reason not to re-sign him. But if they can hold on to their current core of talent the Packers are not too far from competing for a SB.

It’s hard to remember, given how long ago it was and how salaries escalate, but Adams is ALREADY playing on a big contract. When Ted Thompson signed him to his current deal in late 2017, it made him the fourth-highest paid receiver in the league.

It was absurd at the time to put Adams at that level, but the Packers did, and he didn’t slack off afterward.

  24. I don’t blame him for bolting when and if Rodgers does, but the Pack can always tag him if they really want to retain him.

Wow look at Nostradamus over here apparently he can predict the future. you do that as admirably as you summed up your buddy Kumerow packers career scrub to cut to practice squad.

  26. The strategy is simple, wait till the season is over and then apply the Franchise tag. keep him for one more season and then he will be in his late 20’s on the downward slope of his career. Then if another team wants to sign him to a huge contract, buyer beware. It’s like the life span of a car, the Packers got Adams when it was a new machine and got their best milage out of him. Afterwards, the cost is non in line with the performance in which case, let the Vikings sign him.

  27. Right now, the focus is entirely on the 2021 season.

It’s been a truly wonderful summer for Wisconsin sports.
Fans were witness to the Milwaukee Bucks historic trek through the NBA postseason that culminated in their 1st Title in 50 years.
What an awesome run and an amazing team.

The Milwaukee Brewers have been able to ride a very strong pitching staff and are currently 20 games over .500, well on their way to punching their ticket to October baseball.
An incredible baseball team who’s story has yet to be told.

Unfortunately in Green Bay, we had a small kerfuffle between Aaron Rodgers and management that led to some crazed hysteria, erroneous stories and bizarre gossip.
    A strong difference of opinion.
Getting everybody on the same page, personally, will take some time.
And quite honestly, without both sides finding a little hcommon ground and admitting some fault, it may never be completely fixed.
But, on the field, this Packer team is stacked and ready.
They’re basically returning almost everybody from a squad that has gone to the NFC Championship game the last two consecutive years.
If this talented team can stay healthy there’s no reason they can’t challenge for the NFC Title once again.
Could they play into February? Who knows.

What happens after for Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams remains to be seen.
There’s still way too much football to be played between now and then.
A lot can happen and probably will along the way.

    Exciting times for Wisconsin fans.
And it just keeps getting better and better. 🙂

I only predicted the Packers will field a team next year. Are you saying they won’t?
