T.J. Watt not participating in team drills during contract negotiations

Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt has not participated in team drills during training camp. Late last month, Mike Tomlin made it seem as if Watt was rehabbing an injury, saying Watt was day to day and adding, “I don’t have to report injuries this time of year, so I won’t.”

As it turns out, Watt is holding in as his representation and the Steelers work on a contract extension.

Defensive coordinator Keith Butler revealed the truth a few days ago when asked about Watt’s absence in practice. “That’s none of my business,” Butler said, via Bob Labriola of the team website. “I hope he signs a contract, and let’s get it done. When he gets that done, we’ll talk about that.”

Steelers president Art Rooney II said recently the team hopes to have a deal with Watt completed before the start of the season. Until then, Watt is taking part only in meetings and conditioning work.

Not unique at all, really,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday, via Labriola. “You know, that negotiation process is going to run its course. Some run their courses faster than others. If I remember correctly, Cam Heyward had less than 100 percent participation when he was in a similar circumstance a short time ago. I like to focus my energies on the guys who are working, and I’m less concerned about the guys who aren’t, whether it’s contractually related or injury related. At this time of the year, I’m all eyes on the guys who are working, and one man’s misfortune or inconvenience is an opportunity for another.”

Watt is in the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, scheduled to earn $10.09 million. The Steelers’ team policy is not to negotiate contract extensions once the regular season begins.

“I’m not into the hypotheticals,” Tomlin said when asked what might happen if Watt doesn’t have a new contract by the time the regular season opens. “You know, we’ll deal with today, and then we’ll deal with tomorrow, tomorrow. You can talk all day about hypotheticals relative to that issue and others.”

Watt, 26, made the All-Pro team each of the past two seasons and was third in defensive player of the year voting in 2019 and second last season. He has 29.5 sacks the past two seasons, including an NFL-best 15 in 2020, with 77 quarterback hits, 15 pass breakups, 10 forced fumbles and 23 tackles for loss.

Tomlin is unconcerned about Watt falling behind by not practicing.

“The business end is going to run its course,” Tomlin said. “T.J. is highly conditioned. Our strength staff is working with him. He’s getting in good work days, and the process is running its course. In the meanwhile, I’m focused on the guys who are working and their level of productivity and what type of days they’ve been having.”

He did not leave the Texans, his brother JJ Left the Texans for the cardinals, TJ has always been a steeler

  2. Cap hell is cap hell. Pretty bad they didn’t budget properly yet again or invest in a qb as Ben continues to raid their cap ceiling.

    lol

  3. Thumbs up for the Watts family and thumbs down for the Bosa family…who do you all have?

could one person know less about what the comment on?
Steelers have the most room under the cap they’ve had in years. And are going to have close to the most in the league next year.
If you’re gonna troll…troll with facts

Where’s the contract? Haden wants a deal or may pout and Fitzpatrick wants his deal.

You won’t have the cap space you think during this rebuild, one your team is delaying.

And then there is flabby rental Ben.

  6. If you’re going to hold out, this is the way to do it…

Honor your contract and report on time as a member of your TEAM. Do your conditioning and attend the meetings while you wait quietly, away from social media, while your contract is worked out.

Not violating your contract by not showing up, then jet-skiing and discoing and babbling incoherently on social media like a certain Steeler running back a few years ago…

    Every team has contract issues
The most successful franchise in the NFL since the merger, 50 years ago, by any statistical measurement.
    I rest my case…

Au contraire, Colbert and Tomlin have led a paper tiger franchise for a decade now, refusing to do a proper rebuild. And, that’s on top of draft whiffs like Jarvis Jones, Bud Dupree, and so many others, the list is too long to post here. They’ve overpaid for free agents like Steve Nelson and now someone like a Trai Turner.

If your team was as fantastic as you claim, they would be an actual super bowl contender. Your fambase is loaded with homers who think anything Pitt does is just the bestest.

Watt is the best player on the team and probably the most mature. Low IQ and immaturity are things the Steelers love to cater to, but Watt isn’t that. He should already be paid.

Wait until Seattle overpays Jamal Adams and Fitzpatrick wants 20 mil per as well.

It may not have been worth a 1st rder with him having such leverage.

Instead of blurting things out, do some research. They have ample amount of room. Check it yourself. Speaking of quarterbacks, where’s Stidham? You promised us so much on him. What happened? Oh and for the record, New England was in cap hell last year.

  10. If it’s not against the rules, then what is rationale for not negotiating during the season?

  11. Why?
If he’s currently under contract, he needs to be out there.
Let your agent handle it and go to work.

No, they weren’t. They were rebuilding and had a lot of contracts coming off the books, as all part of the process as Mike Lombardi pointed out.

Your team has failed to win a SB for over 10 years because your moron GM and Coach think they’re above it. Watt is the best draft pick on D they’ve had for years and years. Your secondary blows so bad you had to use picks and pay more for Haden and Fitzpatrick.

BB’s drafted well, kept costs dow and then opened up the checkbook one time to complete the rebuild with a qb in tow.

I am thrilled with Mac Jones and Stidham as the back up. I don’t care what the name is, just the skill set.

Thanks for playing and enjoy overpaying without leverage and Dwayne Haskins as the future! That has to suck. bawahah

  13. mdt53bd, they probably prefer not negotiating during the regular season due to the distraction — both the player himself, and the rest of the team.

Losing focus can cause serious injuries — missed tackles getting the QB flattened; receiver running the wrong route; QB throwing where a player is defenseless going after the ball, etc.

  14. Regardless of who the player is or what team they play for, I wonder what it must be like to get paychecks for the upcoming year totaling $10 million, and you still getting to choose when you want to work. Most of us would be written up/disciplined at our jobs if we sat out for 10 minutes let alone days/weeks at a time…unreal

  15. And, that’s on top of draft whiffs like Jarvis Jones, Bud Dupree, and so many others, the list is too long to post here.
