Brian Gutekunst says Packers have had “no discussions” about bringing back Clay Matthews

It wasn’t a joke. But it’s still not happening.

Packers G.M. Brian Gutekunst was asked by reporters on Sunday about the recent effort by quarterback Aaron Rodgers and others to urge the team to bring back linebacker Clay Matthews via Instagram. Gutekunst said that there have been no discussions about that.

It doesn’t mean there definitely won’t be.  If it was going to happen, there’s a good chance the Packers already would have at least talked about it.

Rodgers, receiver Randall Cobb, and tackle David Bakhtiari made waves on Instagram by starting the effort to “BRING HIM BACK,” in reference to Matthews. Some dismissed it as a joke, or a precursor to a one-day retirement contract.

The players, we’re told, want him back. Matthews is believed to be interested in coming back. But the Packers, as expected, don’t plan to pursue that possibility.

If it ever were to happen, Gutekunst likely would prefer to wait until after Week One, since the full salary of a vested veteran becomes as a practical matter guaranteed if he’s on the active roster for the first game of the season. Even then, the Packers would have to bump someone off the team in order to put Matthews on it.

It’s unknown whether Rodgers, Cobb, and Bakhtiari have considered that specific aspect of playing pretend G.M. For every player who enters, another player already on the roster must leave.

  1. You sure you want to make that statement? It might upset Rodgers and the whole Aaron runs the Packers crew.

  2. if it’s a one day retirement contract then sure go for it

  3. Football decision 100% correct. But with your QB calling you Jerry Krause to his teammates, in all group text messages…100% loss.

  4. 29 combined seasons with Favre and Rodgers, 2 rings. We’re finally getting a glimpse into why that is, what a clown show.

  5. These players are completly just playing the media at this point like Rodgers did all offseason. Ridiculous thought to bring back Clay. Lol

  6. Considering that Cobb is basically a security blanket move for someone having a tantrum… he should realize his place

  7. This is why you can’t have players involved in front office decisions, it becomes about personal relationships and who you like; instead of about scouting, roster management, and cap management.

Clay Matthews is past his prime and would not help this team improve. At this point in his career he would probably be only the fourth best pass rusher on the team.

We already traded for a shell of his former self receiver who may not beat out the third year undrafted free agent. I’m done with the Packers accommodating Aaron’s whims. I actually hope the reports are right and this is his last year. Denver is welcome to this headache.

  8. Dirt Matthews hasn’t been good in years. I can see why Coach Ewwin Wawgers would want him on the team. If the team tanks then Ewwin can then blame the GM for the failure. Wawgers logic is no logic.

  9. 2 excellent points from commenters that need to be highlighted:

Likely this would happen week 2 pro-rated.

Are you sure you want to piss off Rodgers publicly?

  10. Not sure this GM and Coach can survive the player revolt. Rodgers has now shown that he runs the team. The players are starting to follow suit. Can’t wait for them to fall short again.

  11. These rumors are the truth on how bad the 1st round bust Gary has been.

    How is Jeff Gladney doing?

  12. And GB didn’t see this coming the second that they “worked things out” with Rodgers? They didn’t think bending to his will to get Cobb would also reinforce demands such as this? Maybe Rodgers is right and the GB leadership really doesn’t know how to lead people and build teams… Once your star player is allowed to make the team his personal assistant, it’s over. The inmates are now running the show in GB.

  13. That extremely loud laughter you hear is the Packers front office room after Aaron walks out of it with yet another suggestion.

  14. If Clay would come back at a discount and understand that he has a specific role of a situational pass rusher, I don’t think it is that bad of an idea. I like the idea of having a high energy vet to help lead a very young roster. I would not be upset if it didn’t happen but I don’t think it is that wacky. A year off may have helped Clay out, It can’t hurt to kick the tires. If he wants to be in GB, knows his role and is in good shape physically, why not? I am 95% sure that it won’t happen.

  15. Matthews knows he’s a shot football player, do the right thing and retire gracefully.

  16. inmates do NOT get paid millions- poor choice there coltsfan, Indiana still seems to think it is part of the south

  17. Jeff gladney haf potential and was good for a rookie, obviously has issues, Gary is just a plain old TT first round draft bust. Whats your excuse?

  18. Gute laughing after being asked if they are joking around or?

Gute laughing harder: “That is probably more a question for them.”

    Too funny

  19. Yes they have, Brian just hasn’t been included. Rodgers runs on a need to know basis. Rodgers will include Brian when Brian needs to know.

    I don’t understand a word of this.
Were you having a stroke when you thumbed this post out?

  22. Oh,so Gutekunst says, but he hasn’t heard what Aarogant Rodgers wants, yet.
I expect Rodgers to call Matthews and tell him to report on Monday.

    Packers GM: ‘No.’
Hey Aaron: how’s ‘having a voice’ working out so far?

  24. With all the money that Matthews saved by not getting haircuts he should live comfortable in retirement

Cuz you and your fan base run around like your NFL royalty. Packers are all about asking how many rings until Pats fan joins the convo…..lmao

    Xxxxxxxx

Because MN has never drafted a bust. Gutekunst drafted Gary. If you’re going to talk trash at least get your facts straight.

  27. This is more of Aaron Rodgers trying to hurt the Packers in the fans eyes. But asking for a popular feel good move of bringing back one of the most popular Packers ever, even though he knows they wouldn’t do it, nor should they. I’m growing weary of Rodgers’ antics in trying to make the Packers look worse than him.

  28. After Rodgers is traded this offseason, release Cobb and then sign Mathews. And then release Mathews a day later. Just to send a message.

  29. If true (which I doubt,) this cavalier consideration would diminish the return of Randall Cobb. Is he real or is he a joke?

  30. Clay Matthews had 8 sacks his last season….. and then had a year to get fresh. There’s no reason to think he couldn’t get double digit sacks.

  31. This is a good opportunity for Cobb, Bakhtiari, and Rodgers to demonstrate corporate risk, if they want a say in personnel matters. They can volunteer to pay Matthews” salary from their own compensation! It’s called “putting your money where your mouth is. Otherwise……shut up.

  32. Lots of years with just Favre and Rodgers and 2 rings, 3 trips. Sure thing.

How many rings those guys have without the Packers? You know – to show their superiority?

Heck – there are a lot of teams that use more QBs in 3 games than the Packers have in 3 decades and they don’t have any rings…

So far, ANYTHING & EVERYTHING Rogers has had to say has NOT been worth listening to…. This guys EGO is so far blown out of proportion he’s gone full tilt DIVA!!! Really, when push comes to shove, what has he done that he believes gives him this perceived GM entitlement??!! BLOWHARD!!!

  34. Every opposing quarterback is sad Matthews is gone because now their team cant get any roughing the passer calls on old Clay.why would the Packers sign him for any reason except a one day contract so he can retire as a Packer.if he was still so great why isnt he in some teams trainng camp right now,did he and his agent suddenly lose their ink pens.

  35. “If Clay would come back at a discount and understand that he has a specific role of a situational pass rusher, I don’t think it is that bad of an idea.”
    __________

That idea’s time was about 5 years ago. Today, unless he wants to become a coach his only role is coming back to shake hands and sign some autographs.

  36. Jeff gladney haf potential and was good for a rookie, obviously has issues, Gary is just a plain old TT first round draft bust. Whats your excuse?

Gary will be playing this year and Gladney won’t. A guy no longer in the league is how I define bust. BTW, Gary was drafted by Gutekunst.

  37. Packers Org need to nip this in the bud but I’m afraid Rodgers started something and other top players are going to start to do the same. They will all want to be part of negotiations and team decisions.
