Jon Gruden on Raiders’ vaccine requirement: I support the decision that was made

On Monday night, the Raiders became the first team to mandate proof of vaccination for all attendees at home games in the 2021 season. With the requirement, fans over the age of 12 will not have to wear masks inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Asked about the mandate in his Tuesday press conference, Raiders head coach Jon Gruden noted it should have a positive effect on crowd noise.

“Well I just support the decisions that are being made,” Gruden said. “Every state, every team is probably going to have a different view on this. I support the decision that was made. I’ll be anxious to see as many Raider fans as possible with no mask. That’s what I’m excited about. They can make more noise that way. But I know it’s a touchy subject for a lot of people, but I do support the direction we’re heading in. And I encourage everybody I know to get the vaccine and come join us.”

The Raiders will have an opportunity for fans who have not been vaccinated to receive a shot before a game and then wear a mask while inside the building.

The policy goes into effect with the Raiders’ first regular-season game on Sept. 13, when the Raiders host the Ravens in Week One on Monday Night Football.

  1. I thought a vaccinated person could get Covid and could also pass it on. Wonder how that’s going to work with 60,000 closely confined fans.

Leave it to Gruden to say something enthusiastically stupid. Wear the mask.

  3. “attendees at home games in the 2021 season.” I hope the Raiders include players in this requirement

  4. The opposition to this is just boggling.
    Be sane.
    Get vaccinated.
This whole thing is Darwin In Real Time.

This is not a difficult choice and it is great to see Las Vegas standing up for it.

  5. We live in an upside down world.

First of all masks don’t work either way. They may make stupid people feel better but they don’t work.
Second there are studies coming in from all over the world showing the vaccines are not nearly as effective as they were sold. One study shows Pfizer is just 42% effective against Delta.

Yes that means 58% or 37,700 fans would be at risk of Covid. The good news is people are not dieing from Covid at rates that make any of this worth it.

  6. So… Vaccine takes two weeks to actually create the immunity that is supposed to be so great (even though vaccinated people are getting sick). How does this make any sense?

  7. The pandemic will end when nearly everybody gets Covid immunity.

Pick your poison, you have 2 choices:

    1) Get vaccinated (ask your Doctor, you know the person you go to for your health concerns, if you should get the vaccine)

    2) Get Covid and survive (if you don’t get the Delta, you will get infected by a subsequent strain)

I applaud the Raiders for making a sensible decision. I hope many other businesses make the same decision.
