Jon Gruden: Zay Jones taking advantage of opportunities with Raiders

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Zay Jones said last month that playing for head coach Jon Gruden has helped reignite his love for football.

It appears Jones has similarly struck a chord with Gruden as well.

I would say his ceiling is untapped,” Gruden said, via W.G. Ramirez of the Associated Press. “He’s taking advantage of these opportunities. … “I’m rooting for him, I’m really happy for him because nobody has work harder than him.”

Jones had a strong opening to the preseason for the Raiders, catching three passes for 57 yards against the Seattle Seahawks on just 13 snaps before taking a seat for the remainder of the game.

Jones is trying to recapture some of the success he had during his second season in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills. Jones started 15 games in 2018. He caught 56 passes for 652 yards and seven touchdowns during a career season with the Bills.

But Jones wouldn’t last another full season in Buffalo as he was traded to the Raiders after just five games the following season. He’s combined for just 34 receptions, 301 yards and one touchdown in his 26 games played for the Raiders since the trade.

“I just try to work as hard as I possibly can, that’s all I’ve known since a very young age,” Jones said. “So, coming up, I just try to work as hard as I can and put me in a position. It doesn’t promise you anything, it just allows for an opportunity maybe to arise. That’s all I’m gonna continue to do, is put the next foot forward and treat every day the same.”

  1. This guy still holds the ncaa record for catches in a season with a 152 grabs, for someone who caught the ball so much in college u would think he would have a little passion for the game, glad we moved him outta buffalo he was very complacent maybe now he figures it out.

  2. It will be tough for him to make the squad with a more talented roster at the receiver position but he might be the last one to make the team, Carr and Chucky are rooting for him so they must see something or talent in him, Good luck Zay!

  3. He has the inside track on the #6 spot because he’s one of Gruden’s pets, kind of like Erik Harris was. He can make a play every now and then but disappears for long stretches. He has good hands but has trouble getting open. Not a reliable target by any stretch.

He has Ruggs, Bryan Edwards, Hunter Renfrow, John Brown and Willie Snead ahead of him. He’s battling with Keelan Doss for the 6th spot. Doss has played in several games as well, has been a camp favorite in the past, and also had 6 catches for 55 yds this past weekend. So the spot is not a lock for Zay.

Honestly, I just don’t see much difference between the two guys.

He 100% makes the squad. The Raiders gave him a fully guaranteed contract. The Zay talk from Gruden and some of the best writers is laughable to me. It’s like he’s running in quicksand. He will be at best the #5 WR and will need multiple injuries to see the field a lot. He’s a good blocker so he’ll play some on obvious running downs and can play all positions, so that’s a plus.
