It didn’t look good when Jets edge rusher Carl Lawson went down with an injury at Thursday’s practice, it didn’t sound good when word broke that he needed an MRI to determine the severity of an Achilles injury and any hope of good news went out the window on Thursday afternoon.

The Jets confirmed the worst fears about Lawson’s injury. He has a ruptured Achilles and the team announced that he will miss the entire 2021 season as a result.

It’s a devastating blow to the Jets. They made Lawson the centerpiece of their moves on defense this offseason and Lawson looked like he was worth every penny of his three-year, $45 million pact at training camp this summer.

Bryce Huff took Lawson’s place for the rest of Thursday’s joint session and will join John Franklin-Myers, Kyle Phillips, Vinny Curry, Ronald Blair, and Jabari Zuniga as options off the edge for the rest of the 2021 season.

The Jets also announced safety Zane Lewis is out for the year with a torn patellar tendon. Wide receiver Denzel Mims and defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins are day-to-day after injuries on Thursday.

  1. Awful news, and an extremely hard injury to come back from 100% as well. Prayers to him and his family as he recovers and hopefully he’ll be good to go for next season.

  2. Good luck to the Packers trying to find someone to practice with them next summer after a cheapshot knocked out the Jets’ best player.

  3. That sucks for the Jets, nothing will go right for then. Cure of giving Mark Sanchez a 2nd contract. I wonder if they practice on grass or field turf. players mostly all prefer natural grass to field turf. It might be better than the astro turf, that was green outdoor carpet over cement, but it’s still not grass. I would never have anything but grass if I was an owner I wouldn’t risk guys making 15 mil plus on field turf. There is still a slightly higher injury risk on field turf. Mostly Acls and ligaments.

  4. Man, hate to here that about cousin Carl. Hated to see him leave. Hopeful for a speedy recovery 🙏

  5. The amount of season ending injuries that have occurred before the start of the season the last several ears is mind blowing.

  6. Man that’s terrible. The last few years it seems like the Jets consistently take one step forward then two steps back. I really like Lawson to, awesome player. AZ drafted a guy this year that profiles similar to Lawson in Victor Dimukeje. Only time will tell if he can step up at the NFL Level like Lawson has.

  7. Brutal news for Carl Lawson and the Jets. I feel bad for him. He’s already been terrific in the NFL but appeared to be on the brink of a breakthrough season. Good luck to him.
