Darrell Bevell: Trevor Lawrence, Gardner Minshew still status quo in QB competition

The Jaguars started Trevor Lawrence at quarterback in the team’s first preseason game and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said on Thursday that the first overall pick of this year’s draft is likely to start against the Saints on Monday night.

Bevell was quick to note that starting Lawrence in these games isn’t a sign that the team has made a decision on their quarterback for Week 1. While just about everyone expects Lawrence to have that job, the Jaguars say he’s still competing with Gardner Minshew for the No. 1 job in Jacksonville.

“We’re still going to handle it that way until we end up making the final decision,” Bevell said, via John Reid of the Florida Times-Union. “Right now, they are still status quo. We’re trying to make everybody better. We want competition at each and every position. Both guys are getting better because of it.”

Bevell said that he thought “the whole game experience” was important for Lawrence’s growth and that he thinks the rookie will continue to improve as a result of being exposed to opposing defenses. That process wouldn’t come to an end in the preseason, which makes it all the likelier that the Jaguars will choose to roll with the player they made the long-term plan at quarterback once the dust settles on this summer’s competition.

  1. Please! Stop with the nonsense. There’s no competition for the QB position in Jacksonville. It’s just a matter of when they want to put Trevor Lawrence on the field, and hopefully pump up the trade value of Garner Minshew in the mean time. I understand the public speaking, and what a coach needs to say to his players, and I’m perfectly fine with whatever Bevell needs to say. Whoever is asking those questions is just as silly.

  2. They’ll get back to the high level of QB play from years ago. What was his name? Yeah, I can’t remember either.

They aren’t trading Minshew . He’s making less then a million this year and next . Hard to find an experienced backup QB for that kind of money . Bevell’s job is twofold , get Lawrence ready to play and keep Minshew focused by stressing the competition is ongoing . Bottom line we all know Lawrence is going to start but as last season proved with Tua , Herbert and Burrow things can change in a hurry during the course of the NFL season for rookie QBs . I wouldn’t be surprised to see Minshew on the field this year if Lawrence struggles over a few games or if he’s getting hit too often . To be clear I think Lawrence is going to be a really good QB but being on a bad team he might not show it coming out of the gate this season .

  4. Yes, everyone knows this is a bunch of smoke and Trevor is going to be starting Week 1. But the real story should be how bad he has looked in the preseason. If it was a real competition (and Trevor wasnt the first pick), they would have to go with Minshew.

  5. He will and should start. In recent years, we have seen many quarterbacks (Watson, guy in San Diego, Wilson) perform well coming out of the gate. In my opinion, it comes down to whether Trevor can mentally handle not being successful right away. If he can, then he likely will be just fine. I’d like to see him make it rather than see another year of men chew.

Minshew is that you? In all seriousness though if you think Minshew would be the starter if it was whoever has been the best in the preseason then you haven’t been paying attention as Lawrence has been noticeably better then every other QB on the roster since day two of training camp.

  7. Urban wants competition, and the positive stress it causes, at every position. Bevel even said it, one of the primary reasons is to make both better.

  8. So your saying you wasted the #1 pick in the draft, he can’t distance himself from Minshew

  9. Minshew is second team. Please just name Trevor as the starter. What a bunch of wishy-washy coaches.

  10. Minshaw has the same amount of chance as Tebow….that said, seeing how Burrow went down, they better keep Minshaw anyway

  11. I don’t know…when a man cuts his mullet you know he’s getting serious. No more party in the back – it’s all business now. Trevor better watch his back /s

Not trading Minshew. We have seen the value of an above average backup. His contract is team friendly and they really don’t know what they will get with Lawrence. They will most likely need Minshew at some point before the end of the season…

So you are comparing Tebow to Minshew? in 20 career starts Minshew has completed 63% of his passes for 5500 yards with 37 TD and 11 int. Yes, he is 7-13 as a started, but NO ONE was winning with these Jags teams…

  14. If this is true I would be worried about Lawrence being a bust if I was a Jags fan.

  15. Amazing bust potential in lawrence. NFL GMs need to learn these tall white giraffe looking dudes aren’t hacking it.

  16. I don’t see the value in what they are trying to do. Lawrence is the QB. It makes no sense to play Minshew. If the point is to bump the value of Minshew, I think that is shortsighted when Lawrence is losing reps. If they are really going to play this out then they drafted the wrong guy. If they drafted the wrong guy, they even wouldn’t know it yet. Just let the team and the QB grow together.
