Josh McDaniels: Cam Newton certainly is the starter now and he’s done a good job

The Patriots appear to have a pair of viable options to start at quarterback in Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones.

Both QBs performed well in New England’s second preseason matchup against Philadelphia on Thursday. Newton completed 8-of-9 passes for 103 yards with a touchdown. Jones finished 13-of-19 for 146 yards, leading three scoring drives.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was asked if he knows who the Week One starter will be and if there’s a timeline to make that choice. But McDaniels essentially stated the status quo — Newton is the starter for now.

“I know this is going to sound silly, but I haven’t really worried about it,” McDaniels said, via Ryan Hannable of NESN. “I think that decision from Bill [Belichick] will be made when the time is right to make it. Cam certainly is the starter now, and he has done a good job. He has gone in there, he played well the other night. He’s practiced well. But, I know those guys are really competing hard and we’re giving them an opportunity to compete and play a lot of football.

“… I am very pleased with the effort that we’re putting in at the quarterback position, the improvements we’re making, and the way that we’re attempting to run the offense. Everything isn’t perfect. We still have a long way to go and things we can work on and improve and make better, but I think the desire to do it, the way we want to do it to the standard that we’re trying to hold them to I think is right where we want it to be.”

So there is still no guarantee that Newton will be the Patriots’ QB1 to open the season. But what appears unlikely is the possibility that New England could play both quarterbacks. McDaniels was asked about that on Sunday and said, “I haven’t thought about it at all.”

“Honestly, our focus is on trying to get them to do everything that they are practicing or doing in the games to the best of their ability, and seeing them improve and focusing on the things where maybe this is an area we need to get better at,” McDaniels said. “I have not stopped for one second to think about how to utilize multiple people in the same game. I am encouraged by all our quarterbacks in terms of the way they are working, some of the things they have been able to do in our competitive practices, and some of the things they have done in the preseason games. I am encouraged by that.

“But, we have a lot of work ahead of us this week, a great opportunity to get better both on our own and against the Giants and then following it up in the game on Sunday night. I am excited to do that and that is where my focus is.”

  1. As I’ve kept telling y’all – doesn’t matter how good Mac looks preseason, BB won’t start him until Cam falters. Sure, Cam could’ve regressed or stunk before Sept and left BB no choice but to go with Mac, but otherwise preseason ain’t a true duking-it-out contest, no matter how much the media keep talking it up. Why? Because even 3 preseason wins ain’t worth one real game win. And don’t point me at what McDaniels just said – he ain’t gonna tell y’all there’s no competition, he wants a little healthy fire under his QBs.

  2. So, the Pats have the same starter as last year, have some marginal upgrades at TE, and got some aging opt-outs back for the D.

Miami & the Jets are much more of a threat to the division right now.

  3. So wild now that they are a bad team. It’s a real mental adjustment for fans and foes alike.

  4. Cam should be more familiar with the system this year so he should look much better.

  5. Mac will turn out to be the best of this tears QB class and a perfect fit for the Pats to get back to the top. Newton is a place holder and it’s just a matter of time before Jones takes over.

  6. This means no playoff for Patriots, and Belichick will be exposed.

Patriots fans forget that Cam may be more familiar with the play books, other teams are also more familiar with Cam’s playing style. Where are those newly signed TE and WR?

  7. Ztoa, you sound like a broken record and remind me of Chicken Little, he too was embarrassingly wrong.
As for billsrthefuture and ninersgreat, since when has simply one 7-9 season made any team bad especially when discussed prior to the start of the next season?
As for “Bills…” woeful analysis, I’ve seen more thorough and accurate assessments by grade school Kids.

Barring major injuries or a QB collapse, this current NE team can easily finish 10-7 or 11-6, (they are NOT the 2020 edition).
And should they be spared a severe case of the injury bug, (which all teams including SF and Buffalo are also susceptible to) and get better than expected results at QB, I can see them going far in playoffs
and certain texters being missing in action..

  8. It’s fun watching Bills’ fans puff out their chests after one decent season. But even the Jets have a trophy in their case

  9. 1dayatatime,

Just tell me how you felt after first 3 games in 2020 season. Ever heard of one year wonder? Remember Edelman’s game of 179 yards? Other teams simply had no clue how to handle Cam in Brady’s system at the time.

Pats team is better this year? which signed free agency has stood out? If a WR can’t learn the playbooks within 3 months, he will never be able to learn. I said in other thread that if those newly signed WR and TE are waste of money, Pats won’t make playoff. Book on it. Do you really think that Belichick can pull rabbit out of a hat that Pats receivers suddenly be able to get open?

  10. Platooning quarterbacks? Has that ever worked? Backs, line and receivers having to adjust from series to series or half to half. Not good. Just choose. Which the Patriots will do.

  11. ztoa – are you serious? Pats got the two best TEs in FA, upgraded the OL, and signed 2 WRs who will be better than anyone on the team last year. Pats have a top 5 OL and top 7 TE room. RB room is full of very good but not great players. WRs still are below average at best. All in all, the offense should be good with average QB play. Defense is 1 year removed from the best in the league. Belichick addressed the run defense in FA and the draft. Pats have a top 3 DB group and a very good front 7. No reason why they can’t be top 5-7 Defense again this year. This is a playoff team which is probably most similar to the 2001 and 2003 Pats teams.

  12. All in all, the offense should be good with average QB play.

Just let you know that Deshuan Watson never had top 10 offense with DeAndre Hopkins. You think that couple of TE will work? didn’t you see that the experiments in Seahawks and Packers failed?

Running QB needs great deep threat, not TE. With Cam, Pats offense will be in the middle at best. You people just take Brady’s top 4 offense for granted. Do you even know where the offense was ranked last season?

If Cam is the starter then why not give Mac one series per game. It could be at the beginning of the second half with scripted plays. Mac has shown an ability to run a fast paced series which could throw the defense off after facing Cam for the first half of the game. At the very least, teams would have to prepare for both QBs.

    Huh?!? Same guy, same post.

  15. It’ll be curious to see if this all pans out for the Pat’s. Everyone called BB a genius with Brady and then last year he was being ripped for terrible drafts and to step down from GM duties. If he’s as good as advertised then they should have a good year. If not, I’m not sure how much longer he’ll stick with coaching.

  16. in a perfect world Cam improves his play over last year with the new offensive additions in the skill positions leading to better decisions and play selection all around … remembering too that they shall be pounding the ball on the ground as much as they can get away with as well so it just won’t be Cam lead em all to hell … while they should be expected to make the first round of the playoffs anything past that would be considered a bonus and the new kid comes in next year all ready to go after getting some reps at various times this year as some quality playing time never hurts the development and possibly even a two QB system if Cam did good and is invited back … but they gotta play the games first and a much better lay of the land will be available come dec. should there have been alterations to this original plan … I mean look how many folks are out for the year already as we always hope fate does not horribly alter our team.

  17. It’s night and day between a QB’s first year ( with no preseason), and his second year. It was also the first time in 20 years that the Pats coaches had to prepare a different QB for a season, so they learned a lot, too. This year should be completely different.

You have a much better understanding than that. You used to write intelligent posts.

  19. From a fan’s perspective, I don’t think we have to be “Team Cam” or “Team Mac.” If Cam ends up the week one starter, I hope he starts the entire season because that means the Patriots are winning and in the hunt for a playoff spot. I’m excited to see Jones play, but I’d prefer that to be when he takes the reins next season.

Also, it’s fairly easy to claim they’ve performed at a fairly equal level through limited play in two preseason games (and thus, why not just start the rookie?). Let’s not forget Cam’s running ability, and it’s clear the Patriots have intentionally avoided calling any designed runs for him thus far. Those plays will be dialed up in the regular season though, and until they can get both new TEs healthy and incorporated, it gives Cam an advantage in earning the starting nod.

  20. Cam Newton was recovering from surgery and COVID last year.
I expect he will do better this year.
