Bill Belichick: Someone has to play better than Cam Newton to start over him

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said this weekend that he hasn’t worried much about who will start at quarterback come September because head coach Bill Belichick will make that decision “when the time is right to make it.”

McDaniels also said that Cam Newton “certainly is the starter now” and Belichick has said the same thing multiple times this summer. Belichick took some time during a Monday morning appearance on WEEI to discuss what would have to happen in order for Mac Jones to move past his teammate.

“The fact that Cam started last year, and he’s here, somebody would have to play better than him. Training camp is all about competition,” Belichick said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com.

Belichick said that Newton is “way more comfortable” than he was in his first year with New England and noted that the offseason has brought explosive players and better offensive balance to the team. It sounds like the Patriots are moving toward giving Newton a chance to play with those new arrivals to kick off the regular season, but nothing’s been set in stone in New England at this point.

  1. Well, 30 QB’s played better than him last year, so it should be no surprise when Mac starts.

  2. No, it seems like it’s been set in stone for a while that he be starting. It just seems like the media and some Patriot fans for some reason can’t grasp that. Belichick isn’t starting a rookie if he doesn’t have to.

  3. He has played better than Newton with more of the back ups.

PFF graded out Jones the highest of any Patriot player in last week’s game vs Philly.

Sure, it’s preseason, but he just said training camp is competition. Jones has out-competed Newton so far.

  4. Bill won’t start the rookie…. It’s Cams job to lose…. HOWEVER, Bill will give the reigns to Mac if Cam doesn’t manage the game & makes costly turnovers….. so, Mac will be starting sometime fairly soon

  5. If Mac is really far behind Cam, then he is just another Jarrett Stidham.

Did someone state that Mac was “really far” behind Cam? Or are you just making stuff up again?

Philly used the Patriot game as a cut game. Third, fourth, and fifth stringers were in the game for the entirety of Jones’s time on the field.

Jones played well, but v. Philly he played “better than Newton” against a markedly lower grade of player trying to make a squad that went 4-12 last year.

At this point, Cam is simply better than Mac.

This statement from a Ravens fan who hasn’t watched any of the Pats preseason or practices has zero relevance.

It’s clear to Patriots fans that Mac Jones is the far superior quarterback and the only thing that is holding Belichick back is the fact that Jones just got here. We will see this change happen once Newton has bad back-to-back games as NFL defenses take away all the dump-off screens and make him work downfield.

First, there is no one he can work with downfield.

2nd, it is much much much harder TO SCORE with dump-off screens.

Newton didn’t face any starters. Cox, Barnett, etc, none of em played and Jones played with the back up OL.

Jones runs the offense better regardless of the quality of competition. If I am not mistaken has the quickest release of any rookie qb as well.

  10. It’s time for the Pats to show Buffalo why their trophy case is still empty

    —————————————

This was what Belichick believed when Brady left.

A frog would smile if he heard this.

  11. Mac is OBVIOUSLY the better QB….However he is a rookie & Bill has a (GOD IT KILLS ME TO SAY THIS) prior NFL MVP to start the season with so he will do just that….Cam SHOULD play better (& that’s only because he couldn’t play much worse than last year), so as long as he doesn’t lose games for the Pats & manages the game, he’ll be the starter….but the TRUE POTENTIAL of the offense will never come to fruition until Mac is in there leading it…..

  12. Heck JMeyers played almost as well as Newton at the QB position last year.

That said, after looking at Mac in preseason I don’t think he’s quite ready yet. He is staring at WRs WAY too much. His read progression is getting better though.

  13. Yep as I’ve been saying for months, it’s Cam until he falters in-game – as in a real game.

  14. This is Cam’s second year in the system so he should be better so we will see during the regular season. Don’t put too much stock in preseason games as teams don’t reveal their true gameplans or just play backups.

  15. This is Cam’s second year in the system so he should be better

That happens only if the QB is a real deal, otherwise the longer he plays, the worse he will be, like RG III, Mitchell Trubisky.

Actually, this happened to lot of great QB too after first couple of years that they could win SB again, like Favre, Brees, Rodgers, because other teams had plenty of videos to study them.

  16. Just waiting for the inevitable 8/21 94yd. 0 TD 2 INT stat line from Newton before the uprising. I figure somewhere around mid to late October and then we’ll see the switch.
