Packers revised Za’Darius Smith’s contract in July, but he’s still likely to be cut in March

In late July, at a time when Packers linebacker Za'Darius Smith was believed to be upset with his restructured contract, the Packers addressed his concerns by restructuring it again.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Packers accelerated $10 million in payments to Smith that applied to the prior conversion of most of his salary to a signing bonus, but that deferred all payments from September through the end of the regular season.

Under the deal as revised in March, $14.76 million of Smith’s 2021 base salary became a signing bonus. Smith was due to receive $5 million of that amount as of Week One of the regular season, with the remaining $9.76 million of the 2021 signing bonus paid out in equal installments with his remaining base salary.

Under the new deal, finalized on July 27, the Packers agreed to pay $10 million of the amount within 10 days, with the remaining $4.76 million paid out over the 18 weeks of the regular season, with his base salary.

G.M. Brian Gutekunst alluded to this revised deal when meeting with reporters on Sunday. “We worked through something earlier to kind of move money around and stuff, earlier like right at the beginning of training camp I believe,” Gutekunst said.

The comment was made in response to questions that Smith’s lingering absence from practice due to injury has a contractual component to it. Gutekunst’s response suggested that the moving of money in late July placated Smith. It’s entirely possible that he’s still unhappy, just less unhappy.

The March restructuring, which the Packers had the contractual right to exercise, pushed Smith’s cap number north of $28 million. Since 2022 will be the last year of his contract and given that his $14.5 million salary for 2022 isn’t guaranteed, the decision to convert so much salary to signing bonus virtually guarantees that Smith will be cut after the 2021 season. While he wasn’t happy with the cash flow (as confirmed by the fact that the Packers changed his contract to improved), he’s still not happy with the fact that he has been made into a lame duck, with no security for 2022.

That’s the fundamental problem. The Packers, by kicking the can in 2021, set the stage for Smith to be kicked out of Green Bay in 2022.

  1. good time to move up for a young stud pass rusher. this is what the vikes do, get rid if talent for picks, trade up for talent.

  2. No surprise. Rodgers has called this the last dance which contrary to what the trolls say isnt about comparing themselves to a team that won multiple championships it’s about knowing it’s the end and this team will be broken up after this season no matter the outcome of the season.

  3. I’d be upset as well.

Suppose you, as a regular working stiff, made $100K/year. At that rate it would take you 147 years to make what Smith will make in one year.

Who can blame him for being disgruntled?

  4. Well, he cant tackle and has some of the least amount of sacks in the league. Bu bye…

  5. Right! And all of you were so right about Rodgers getting traded too. Must be hard to be so smary

  6. You forgot a date in your calendar. He’ll be picking up a Super Bowl ring in February! That should ease the pain in March.

  7. Obviously just not enough money to go around for everyone. I wonder what some of the guys who will take the hit think about Rodgers getting his five million dollar Randal Cobb toy.

  8. That’s not entirely accurate. If he gets cut after next season, they’ll take a $12.38M dead cap hit to cut him. If he plays, they’ll take a $28.13M cap hit. Which means if they think he’s worth $15.75M, they’ll keep him for the final year. Or they’ll do another extension with backloaded/void years and reduce the cap number for next year.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The Packers had the fifth youngest roster at the end of last season, a squad with two NFCCG experiences under its belt. The WR’s are deep, the RB’s are deep, the defense is faster and stronger. If Rodgers and Adam’s move on next year (not likely,) Love will have numerous targets and a very good all-around team handed him on a silver platter. It will not be broken up. It will not be rebuilding.

  10. As is so often the case, the Packers brass continues to do the right thing. I can certainly see why some fams of division foes will show how they’re experts. It’ll be fun and funny. Let’s watch.

  11. This situation is exactly why I’m not longer bothered by players holding out (in?). I used to think they should play out the contract they signed. But every time you see something like this story it reminds you that this is a business and teams will cut you lightning fast if the math doesn’t benefit them.

  12. Sitting out at this point isn’t going to get you a long term deal. Playing lights out though will land you one though. Time to prove your worth.

  13. Woah! Shocking news!

    Except it really isn’t.

If only Gute was able move the largest contract off the GB cap and replace it with a more friendly one. Possibly one from a younger player who he’s been groomed to take over for the position for the past 2-3 years?

  14. Well, he cant tackle and has some of the least amount of sacks in the league. Bu bye…

Still can’t get your facts straight. Why don’t you come across the state into Hudson so the average IQ of both states will go down.

  15. NFL teams have front offices who are paid to worry about the future. The players’ jobs are to worry about what they do on the field.
It’s really simple in the NFL — if you want to make a lot of money, perform at a high level, play as many plays as you can, and let your agent and the team worry about the next contract.
If Smith has a great year, he’ll make big money no matter who it’s with. If he doesn’t have a great year, he won’t make as much no matter who it’s with.
Even the best teams change many players every year, including good players. It’s rare to see a team like the Bucs bring everyone back.
As a fan, the only year which matters to me is the present one. I couldn’t care less about the 2022 season right now.

  16. our packers are about to become a cellar dweller after 2021 so we better rally up the ol troops one last time

  17. How about the rest of the story? The Packers have several high profile players that they need to re-sign for next season…Devante Adams, Jaire Alexander and Elgton Jenkins to name a few. They are just moving around what money they can now to try and make some if not all of that possible. All teams do that to try and keep their best young talent. It does not mean Z is gone, it just means he needs to perform this year to make another contract restructure worthwhile for next season.

  18. At least Zadarius earns his pay. Not sure why Preston still has a job, when Rashan Gary basically took his job last season.

Take off the homer glasses, losing your qb(unless it’s a game manager) and losing your top wr is breaking it up. But that’s ignoring the obvious their likely losing a starting lb if not both if the Smith’s, cobb will be gone, Tonyan 50/50 at best, the wr corps other than Rodgers isnt signed for more than this season. So yes that’s entirely the same as the last dance for them, just because your a fan doesnt mean you cant be objective.

  20. Packers are toast and expect a very underwhelming season. Way too many distractions going on for this team. They will be a disappointing
10-7/11-6 and get bounced early in the playoffs should they make it. Then it’s rebuild time. Maybe then crybaby Rodgers will call his family.

  21. Nobody knows .. Rodgers would be traded or retire .. NOT. Speculation is nice for headlines but in reality it’s a nothing burger until the time really comes. Let the chips fall as they may as it has for years.

  22. For people who comment on players salaries and their dissatisfaction you have to remember that these guys are the best of the best of the 350 million people in America. They entertain us and they deserve all the money and the shenanigans that go with it. We have no right to comment on it else we would be one of the talented and fortunate 1000 players on an NFL roster from the entire population

  24. Well Mike, good for your Vikings…your team can sign him in 2022…oh wait ya’ll just signed Everson Griffin nevermind! Another make believe Florio story…just as spot on as the Clay Matthews story. Quite the Packer puppet…great work Pinnochio.

  25. It’s weird how a team manages to return almost their entire roster that went to the NFC Championship game in the last two consecutive seasons, especially during an unprecedented pandemic season where expendable cash is scarce and are either vilified or mocked for it by know-nothing fan bases.

Love Za, and the Packers have paid him every last cent of guaranteed money in his contract.
This deal’s been full filled by both sides.
A majority of his frustration stems from the fact that the way the money had to be shuffled around virtually guarantees that he’ll be cut at season’s end unless a new deal is reached.
As he professed earlier this year on social media, he loves Green Bay and wants to spend the rest of his career playing for the Packers.
    Who can blame him?
And he’s basically working on a prove it deal in 2021.
This is beneficial to both team and player.
I hope Za’Darius has another banner year making an even more difficult decision for Green Bay’s front office.
These are good problems to have.

Time to concentrate on what’s truly important: the task at hand.
The 2020 season is everybody’s focus.
The division, home field, conference and Super Bowl are the goals.
    Let’s get after it!!!

  26. So some people think if it weren’t for Rodgers huge contract we would be keeping Z Smith next year with a 28m cap hit? Seriously? Y’all seem to know more about trolling than actual football.

Actually, you are incorrect. Gutekunst walks past 13 championship trophies every morning — the most in NFL history.

  29. While the tone of the story indicates the team is at fault the reality is both sides know 2022 is financial armageddon for the Packers. Z Smith knows he’s one of the people to feel the pain in 2022.
The Packers remain more than $40 million over the cap in 2022. You can’t fudge that fact.
That is why it’s likely Rodgers last year in Packerland. Z Smith is also likely gone.
One cap website says Rodgers and Smith would account for 35 percent of the cap next year..with 51 others to fit in.

Randall Cobb will likely go too. Those three would count about 45 percent of the 2022 cap.

2021 is an ‘all-in’ year for Green Bay. 2022 is a rebuilding year.

  30. Now that Cleveland got it’s franchise turned around after 30 years, someone has to take their place in the NFL. No better team than Green Bay to be the next laughing stock of the NFL.

If doing the right thing means not winning or even appearing in Super Bowls the current regime is doing all the right things , lol . It took Tampa Bay one year to give a first ballot HOFer a team good enough to win a Super Bowl . It’s been a decade and your doing all the right things management still hasn’t figured it out .

Really because it’s not a vision it’s a fact. You said how Love would get the keys to an offense with players with 2 nfcc game experience next yr and the wr being deep(only Rodgers is signed thru next yr), rb being deep (not arguing that) but who are those “numerous targets” love will have? It’s cool your a homer, your the packers version of touchback6 with no sense of reality but you can at least admit it.

  33. Last dance for two people in a five-person sport doesn’t quite measure up similarly to two people in a twenty-two person sport. The Packers will be competitive in the near future if Rodgers and/or Adams walk. The predictions for the eventual demise of the Packers organization in-general is the same old wishing, hoping, and praying from the haters which we’ve been ignoring for three decades.

  34. “If Rodgers and Adam’s move on next year (not likely,) Love will have numerous targets and a very good all-around team handed him on a silver platter.”

Yea, and your best case scenario will be 8-9. Look what happen the year Rodgers got hurt vs after he came back. Basically the same team, total different outcomes.

That’s not even taking into account the blatant lie of his “numerous targets”. I wouldnt call the ones under contract like Amari Rodgers, Degaura and Sternberger being “numerous targets” unless were just saying there will be 11 guys on offense cause that’s the closest you can call to “numerous targets”

Again it’s not 2 people. MVS isnt signed, Cobb wont be there, Tonyan 50/50,Funchess/St brown not signed both of the Smith’s have a good chance to be gone. Your history delusional looking thru your homer glasses

  37. Every year any number of teams have severe cap issues to work out and it seems to me they always work it out, every time. The Packers are no different. They’ll work it out somehow, they always do. Predictions of demise are as common as pennies and worth just as much.
