Report: Raiders explored a trade for Khalil Mack

Three years ago, the Raiders sent pass rusher Khalil Mack to the Bears. Earlier this year, the Raiders reportedly explored bringing Mack back.

According to Vic Tafur of TheAthletic.com, the Raiders made a call to Chicago about a potential Mack trade before signing Yannick Ngakoue in free agency.

A trade would have triggered a cap charge for the Bears in excess of $20 million, given Mack’s signing bonus and a 2019 restructuring. The Bears restructured Mack’s deal again in 2021, kicking $12 million more into future years.

It’s unclear whether the Bears simply hung up the phone, or whether any actual discussions occurred. Mack’s holdout and departure created plenty of acrimony, and it clouded Gruden’s first year back with the team. The fact that Gruden would even consider bringing Mack back is surprising. Before a deal would have happened, it would have been critical for the Raiders to know that Mack would have welcomed a return to a team that has since moved from California to Nevada.

  1. Really? Have they seen him play lately? Not exactly the wonder people made him out to be.

  2. He represents a position of need but it’s almost impossible to negotiate a deal that would be good for both teams with that kind of value sunk into one player. For LV it would only make sense if they got him back for quite a bit less than they got for sending him to Chicago, but that kind of deal would make Chicago look like fools. If he ever plays in Vegas it would have to have been a cap reduction move in Chicago – maybe a new GM wanting to reset.

  3. Nagy has even made Mack look ordinary…please somebody anybody save all those talented players!!

  4. LOL! Trade a guy and then try to trade back for him???? Again, the Raiders simply don’t know what they are doing.

  5. Seems like a pretty strange thing for them to consider. I figured that bridge had been burned beyond repair.

  6. I think 10% state income tax vs. ZERO would be a really good reason to welcome Nevada over California during one’s prime earning years.

It should be a starting point for any free agent. Brady got a huge raise going to Florida as did every Raider who moved with the team. Texas, Tennessee, Florida, Seattle, all have built in extra cap room.

  7. “Not exactly the wonder people made him out to be.”

Two weeks ago PFF ranked him as the top edge defender, but sure.

Mack does everything, even when his DC doesn’t put him in a position to succeed. Consummate professional.

  8. Mack is overrated and overpaid. The Raiders got it right the first time – unloading that salary and picking up 3 first rounders – 3 starters and and a bell cow running back. Let sleeping dogs lie…

  9. If you ever need a substitution world for confusing, disorganized, sloppy, befuddled, clumsy, misguided, or incomprehensible. Just use Raidering, it covers them all.

  10. Everyone saying Mack sucks doesn’t understand football. There is a difference between “overrated” and “isn’t playing well on the Bears” which is an unfortunately common occurrence. Guys still rated pretty high by PFF but Chicago doesn’t know how to use people good or bad. Critical thinking is gone in this country.

  11. So is this Gruden’s way of finally admitting he should stick to X’s and O’s and let more qualified people handle things like signing and drafting players?

  12. Gruden would be a hall of fame coach if he had a Ron Wolfe type GM. His personnel decisions are his downfalll.

Leave it to a raiders fan to try to paint the raiders recent draft picks a success.

  14. For the people who keep saying Mack is overrated, maybe you want to go back and watch the Bear v Bucs game. There is a reason Brady was confused at the end of the game, Mack was destroying that O-Line. At one point, he flipped one of the Bucs O-linemen like a wrestling move with one arm.

  15. Honestly liked the move to get the first round pics for Mack, but that was conditional on the drafting and coaching that was to occur and that’s been dubious for Gruden and Raiders. The Raiders could have a good season tho, they beat the Chiefs last year in Arrowhead and almost got the Chiefs again. Chucky is a good coach. Aquiring Hudson to play in front of Carr was a great move.

  17. Khalil Mack is the only one who knows how to defend
the Spider Y ZX Banana route……..

  18. Not worth it. Mack isn’t what he used to be. Let him rot in Chicago for the rest of his career

  19. If I was the owner of this team I’d fire whoever suggested that! They are literally saying they made a mistake trading him away. It sounds desperate to revisit that move and actually propose giving away future assets to get him back! It also says loud and clear that the picks they got in return weren’t used successfully.

  20. Bottom line- he got paid- he was all about the money, and nothing more. Reminds me of Albert Haynesworth.

Not a Raiders fan, but this is essentially selling very high and buying very low considering his salary and recent play. Assume the offer was in the 2nd or 3rd round pick range with some later round picks also.

    Considering they got 2 firsts, a 6th and a 2020 3rd in that trade..
If they got him back just 4 years later for 30% of the value they received for trading him, that doesn’t feel like a move of someone who doesn’t know what they are doing. Feels more like 3D chess.

  22. I think the most important numbers in any story about the Raiders is Jon Gruden, 10 years at $10M/year. Doesn’t count against the cap, but that’s a ton of cash for a mediocre coach. At some point, if the Raiders want to be a winner their going to have to eat a lot of that contract.

  23. More fake news. There’s a belief that only network news is fake, not true, sports media is just as fake.

  24. Haha yea make the Raiders pay 3 first round picks and 2 second round picks, give up more than they got for him, that would be a classic Raider move.

  25. Mack is definitely overrated but I think I probably blame the team more than him. I think you could get so much more production our of him if used correctly. The bears never should have made that trade.

No kidding. The Raiders can’t even decide what city they want to be playing in

  27. Gruden is playing Chess while everyone else is playing Checkers. It’s not right for us mortals to question his brilliant ways.

  28. Seems as though Mack forced his way out before his extension went through and he’d have to pay the higher state tax rate. I don’t think the Raiders ever wanted to let him go. Makes complete sense they’d explore a “ homecoming “ to a place that’s more financially appealing. Mack is one of the best, most dominant pass rushers of our time. Not only that, he’s a face of the entire franchise. Considering the personalities Gruden has dealt with before; I doubt he’d balk at the chance to try to get a guy of Mack’s talent back.

  29. The Bears are gonna cut Mack after the season. Here are his cap hits starting in 2022: $30m in 2022, $28.5m in 2023, $26.25m in 2024. No ILB is worth that much money, especially when the Bears are a dumpster fire on offense. Can’t blame Gruden for trying. Nobody can deny that Mack was an All-Pro LB with the Raiders and since the Raiders defense is garbage, it’s not a bad inquiry.

  30. Mack doesn’t even play quarterback and it seems like Matt Nagy has ruined him too….He done got old FAST in Chicago !

  31. Mack doesn’t even play quartback, but it seems like Matt Nagy has found a way to ruin him too !
If Gruden wants him back, I say let him go…He done got old FAST here in Chicago !

  32. Mack was an absolute stud with the Raiders. Good tackle numbers and good sacks. His first year with the Bears was the same even missing 2 games. But his numbers have fallen. And he is getting a bit long in the tooth for a backer. He’s not too far from being a “situational” player. I’m guessing the Bears would want at least a 1st to move him. I told think anyone is giving that up unless he is the missing piece. With the Raiders sadly that’s not the case.

Never mind that the “Bears” were the Chicago Cardinals before moving to St.Louis. Need reminded how many other teams have moved?

  34. Smart move for any team. Mack is a great player. But he’s never won a playoff game so I can’t say he’s a difference maker in this modern NFL driven by offense. To get Mack back AFTER you got Josh Jacobs for him and up and coming WR Edwards would be brilliant. Wonder what they’d have to give up. I’m guessing they were going to offer Mariota before his pay cut and no-trade clause as well as several first rounders. 49ers just gave up 3 first rounders for Trey Lance. His future is in front of him. Curious if Mack is nearing the plateau of his talent. Very Bill Belechick to bring back a player you once traded.
