Vic Fangio: Teddy Bridgewater, Drew Lock have made decision too close to call yet

The Broncos haven’t decided their starting quarterback for their preseason finale, much less the starter for the season opener.

Vic Fangio said Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater (or Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock, if you prefer) will continue to compete for the job.

“We haven’t decided that yet,” Fangio said Tuesday. “We just want to do it at the right time, meaning the right time obviously for the players involved, the team, for everybody. . . . We’ve got 19 days [until the season opener].”

Fangio said the team is not trying to gain a competitive edge by keeping the Giants from knowing who will start Sept. 12. Instead, both quarterbacks have played well enough to make it a difficult decision.

Lock started the preseason opener and has played 47 snaps in two games, completing 14 of 21 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Bridgewater started the second preseason game and has played 40 snaps in two games, going 16-for-19 for 179 yards and two touchdowns.

“It’s pretty damn close,” Fangio said of the competition. “You guys have seen it. . . . It is close, and I think it’s close for a good reason. They both have played well. The good news of this competition is we’ve got two quarterbacks we feel we can go win with.”

The Broncos, though, will have to make a decision soon, picking one of the quarterbacks to start the season opener.

  1. Translation: Neither QB is a winning option for 2021 and neither QB will be around in 2022 when the next iteration of the endless QB competition begins in Denver.

Get that people wanna be smart with their comments, but both QB’s have shown immense improvement through training camp and preseason. This team can actually be dangerous if they don’t turn the ball over, they have been graded as a top 10 roster by almost everyone (hence their dominance in the preseason with a 63-9 score thus far).

  3. Translation: John Elways really wants Drew Lock to win the job but he can’t beat out Teddy Bridgewater.

  4. Drew lock is horrible, teddy isn’t anything to hang your hat on but he ain’t drew lock so ide roll with him

  5. Teddy Bridgewater has performed better with far less opportunity and has demonstrated the intangibles of leadership and poise, however Fangio and others seem to want to give Drew Lock multiple chances before showing him the bench, which is understandable as they have more invested in him time-wise and emotionally. Any other coach would’ve named Teddy the starter by now and moved on.

  6. It’s Lock. They have to see what they have in Lock. They know what they have with Teddy. If Lock has the potential to become “The Guy” they need to know before they give up the farm for Rogers. If Lock shines this year they could stick with him and invest in other areas for next season.
