Jacob Hollister‘s bid to be one of the Bills’ tight ends has come to an end.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Bills are releasing Hollister as they trim their roster to 53 players on Tuesday.

Hollister signed with the Bills as a free agent in March after spending the last two seasons with the Seahawks. He caught 66 passes for 558 yards and six touchdowns during his time in Seattle and had four catches for 53 yards in three preseason games this summer.

Dawson Knox, Tommy Sweeney, Quintin Morris, and Nate Becker opened the day as the other tight ends on the Bills roster. The team has until 4 p.m. ET to finalize their initial 53-man roster.

  1. I expect him to be back in a few days. He was a prime candidate to cut and resign that way they can move someone to IR.

  2. Jaguars have crap for tight ends and first pick on waivers. Actually, I’m not sure how this works- is he on waivers now or is he a free agent and can sign with anyone? After this, you can explain how the salary cap works to me, then we’ll do NBA trades.

  3. This tells me the Bills have found a supplier for Firm Grip or Stick’um for Dawson Knox’s hands.

Haha…jokes aside, I think it is Knox’s blocking ability that keeps him around. He has done a great job there.

Veterans with 4 years experience become free agents immediately and can sign anywhere they choose. Player with less than 4 years are subject to waivers and can be claimed with no say from the player. So this player, assuming the Bills want him back, can be released, the Bills can submit their 53 man roster, then put one of those players on IR that would be eligible for return, then resign Hollister. Anyone they put on IR before the 53 is submitted is out for the season.

The other important factor for taking advantage of this loophole is, in addition to a 4+ year veteran, you want a player with only one year remaining on their deal so there’s no accelerated cap hit.
