The Vikings signed pass rusher Everson Griffen last week. He did not make their initial 53-player roster.

The Vikings released Griffen on Tuesday.

Griffen spent 10 years with the Vikings before signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys as a free agent last offseason. The Cowboys traded him to the Lions during the 2020 season.

Griffin, 33, made 74.5 sacks, 355 tackles, 190 quarterback hits and nine forced fumbles in his time in Minnesota. He totaled six sacks in 14 games last season.

The Vikings also announced they released running back Ameer Abdullah, long snapper Andrew DePaola, offensive guard Dakota Dozier and cornerback Tye Smith.

Minnesota waived offensive tackle Zack Bailey, fullback Jake Bargas, linebacker Tuf Borland, quarterback Jake Browning, tight end Zach Davidson, safety Myles Dorn, offensive guard Kyle Hinton, defensive end Hercules Mata'afa, receiver Myron Mitchell, cornerback Parry Nickerson, receiver Whop Philyor, running back A.J. Rose, Jr., defensive end Kenny Willekes and tight end Shane Zylstra.

They waived/injured receiver Chad Beebe, safety Luther Kirk, offensive guard Dru Samia and quarterback Nate Stanley.

  1. Wow. Some promising players have been waived. Hopefully they can keep Rose and Nickerson on the practice squad. And then comes the issue of backup QB. . .

  2. WOW! A lot of starts and this years draft picks. I assume they’re going to resign Everson with some different contract or something? I can’t believe they got rid of Mata’afa and Willekes! Also I was hoping they would hang onto Rose Jr. He blew up the preseason (and he was like the only one on the team to do so!)

  3. Maybe he didn’t apologize to Kirk like he said he was going to. Kidding (sorta) but I have to guess it was not because he couldn’t physically to contribute to the team. There’s a loose wire in there somewhere. I wish him the best… this has got to be enormously disappointing for him.

  4. Unfortunately, oftentimes the last person to realize the best years are behind him is the player. He had a great career and was most productive during his Viking years and will be remembered for it. There’s no reason for head-hanging.

  5. They’ll probably re-sign Abdullah once they place the rookie RB on IR, and all the Vikings beat guys say the plan is to re-sign Griffen as well. As vested vets, they’re not subject to waivers. Sounds like a bunch of roster maneuvering. It will be interesting to see if any of the rookies and non-vested vets get picked up on waivers.

  6. No one is going to sign griffin or Abdullah. This is just like stashing them on the practice squad to keep younger players from having to pass through wavers only it does not tie up practice squad spots.

  7. All last week we heard about how explosive Griffin was looking. Turned out to be a soggy firecracker, apparently.

  8. They are going to release holms for the practice squad & put smith & the RB on short term IR. Ev will be back by Th, Fr at the latest.
