Kyle Shanahan: I don’t need to announce the 49ers’ starting quarterback, you can figure it out

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan is sticking to his plan not to announce the 49ers’ starting quarterback.

Shanahan told reporters that he doesn’t need to make any announcements about starters at quarterback or any other position.

“I don’t need to announce the quarterback, I don’t think I need to announce the starting punt returner, either, but I bet you guys can figure it out,” Shanahan said.

Jimmy Garoppolo started in the preseason and got most of the work with the first-string offense in training camp, so Garoppolo would appear to be the starter when the 49ers open their season against the Lions. Shanahan indicated that he might use both Garoppolo and Trey Lance, although Lance is recovering from a finger injury that could affect his status for Week One.

Is this the guy who pissed away a SB when he was the OC for the Falcons.
    ———————————————————————-
Yes, the same guy that scored 28pts in the first half and his team’s DC could not stop the pats in 5 consecutive drives. yup.. all his fault

  2. Can’t this guy ever just shut up? Writers asking him questions about starters, injuries and he goes off the deep end.
We all get it that he thinks, wow I dont want my opponent to know who is starting but hey, Rodgers is starting for GB, Hebert of LA, Wilson for Seattle……..DUH!

  3. If there was a true camp “competition” for QB and Lance lost, then Shanahan and Lynch made a bad pick. If Lance won, then Shanahan lacks the leadership to do what is best for the team, regardless of the risks involved.

If there wasn’t a real camp competition for QB then you have to presume he was taking the Andy Reid route of “sit and learn for a year”. In that case you have to respect his decision and time will tell if Lance can be really good after sitting a year.

  4. The nature of Shanahan’s response – the disdain for the questioner, who is only trying to do his/her job – shows why he is so intensely disliked. That, a sub-500 record, and having pi$$ed away a Super Bowl. A more seasoned coach would have given a Belichickian non-answer such as “we’re focused on completing our preparations and will announce the starter when the time comes” or some such. You don’t have to rub the questioner’s nose in it.

  5. Shanahan isn’t intensely disliked. Some of you schleps should worry about the beer stains on your sweats before anything Kyle Shanahan says.

  6. Same guy who cannot win the big one, twice. Probably same thing he told the owner when asked whether his team can win the Super Bowl, twice.

  7. Would be asking a lot with the little experience Lance has to ask him to start week one as a rookie. Played like 17 games at a conference that could compete with the MAC.

  8. I can see picking the kid if you need someone to develop, but this talented guy is a complete project and is nowhere near ready to start. So why did they trade all those picks to get him? They didn’t. They made that trade in order to get Rodgers and when that fell through they picked the project and have spent the time since trying to act like it was planned. Lynch and Shan messed it up.

  9. Ok, should I just name myself, since you all already know I’ll be taking the snaps when the game opens? And yes, in case you’re wondering, I taught Kyle and actually even John Lynch everything they know. They are good boys!

  10. Some of These NFL writers think they are GODS gift. They know how this works. He may say who the starter is or he may not…the key is having the DC preparing for two different QBs and Two different offenses. I wouldn’t say anything either. Everyone knows Jimmy G is starting but you are going to see Lance packages as well…he may just go NO Saints style and put them on the field at the same time. Sheesh.

  11. He’ll regret not drafting Mac for the next 10 years!

Had it occurred to any of you that Mac may not fit the system he and Lynch wants to run? I swear people have already put Jones in the HOF and the kid has yet to play a regular season down. Wait to NFL teams get film on him before we anoint the kid. I don’t like Brady, but its hard not to say he isn’t the GOAT. Jones IS NOT BRADY’s replacement. No one is until you can when 7 or more championships. Its cool to be excited about the future of your QB but until he puts it together season after season lets pump the breaks. I am interested to see Justin Herbert’s 2nd season now that teams have film on him. He looks like he is the real deal. Evaluate Jones at the end of the season is all I’m saying.

  12. 49ers s*** the bed moving up at that cost for someone who’s not ready to start week 1. Luckily for Trey Lance, Jimmy G is made of glass.

  13. Seahawks fan here ✌🏻 – lots of Shanahan hate and trolling for this post. I like him as a HC. top 10 for sure…. could make an argument for top 5. He’s a great coach.

  14. Don’t kid yourself. That is code for he doesn’t know. If it’s Jimmy G. then he must be let down that his head coach, the leader of the team, won’t recognize him as their starter. Bad look for Shanny. Nothing says “I don’t have your back” like pulling a stunt like this.

He should have run the ball twice and kicked a field goal to ice the game rather than let Ryan get sacked by Hightower out of field goal range, so, kind of his fault right there.

  16. Kyle Shanahan has one winning season as a head coach. And that 2019 defense hasn’t been the same since losing Buckner, its best player.

7 of the first half points were on a Pick-6.

  19. Sick of hearing about how Mac Jones should have been his pick. Not going to register with this crowd but preseason is preseason. I’ve watched the Bears tell me they’re going to win the big one year after year because they won the preseason (not a fan, I’ve just lived here for 40+ years). They don’t.

But Shanahan ….I would prefer he just shut up. He sure likes hearing himself talk.

Seems like just yesterday that Stidham was destined to be a HOFer

  21. Just too much smoke coming out of San Fran. Their QB’s looked dubious in the pre season and the coaching didn’t make much sense. JG looked good/ok but hard to rest much faith in him given the treasure spent on Lance and the added distraction
