Rob Ninkovich: Mac Jones was helping Cam Newton learn the playbook

So how did Mac Jones beat out Cam Newton? A former Patriots mainstay claims that Mac Jones showed a much greater mastery of the offense.

Linebacker Rob Ninkovich recently claimed that the rookie knew the offense so well that he was helping Newton learn the playbook.

Jones was having fewer “mental errors,” per Ninkovich, along with a better understanding of the offense. Ninkovich also pointed out that Newton did not run the no-huddle offense or two-minute drill during the preseason.

Fewer than two weeks ago, however, Newton was the starter — according to coach Bill Belichick. Jones took charge after Newton missed five days due to a COVID “misunderstanding.” Maybe Jones would have supplanted Newton sooner or later. Newton’s absence surely helped it happen sooner.

  1. Mac Jones is a humble kid with brains and ability and a great sense of the pocket ala Brady…if his body holds up watch out NFL

  2. This is the guy who got into it with Newton in game one last year, so I’d take this with a grain of salt. But I’m sure the people who don’t like Newton will run with this one. The vaccination thing is why he got cut.

  3. Quit shilling for a fake vaccine.

You would think the left being so smart would start asking pertinent questions as to why so many “fully vaccinated” people are not vaccinated at all.

Rob Ninkovich’s last season in the league was 2016 so great take

The Patriots offense was just not a good fit for Cam.
    ——————————————————
I’d say a better way of putting it would be to say that Cam was not a good fit for the Patriots offense & Mac is the PERFECT FIT for the Patriots offense…. Now Bill just has to keep putting QUALITY pieces around him while he’s on his relatively inexpensive rookie contract over the next 4-5 years….

6 wins tops. He’s a freaking Rookie. Are you guys nuts??? With newton they won 7 games I’ll take 6 with Jones it’s about future development we know newton’s ceiling.

  7. Jones beat out Mahomes’s rookie season in 2017 per PFF.

The fear in the hearts and minds of Pats Haters is everywhere and it is glorious.

The best part is, Jones was not working with the 1s.

Jones will play better than Brady’s 2001 season. lol

  8. I have been watching the Patriots for 30+ years, so I am definitely bias. But, the offense was definitely geared towards Cam’s skill set last year. I still agree with him that there are not 32 better qb’s than him. He is still one of the most gifted athletes on the field. I hope he catches on somewhere and proves the people that are more concerned with his wardrobe wrong. Hell of an athlete; great role model for a lot of kids.

  9. Cam Newton is mentally lazy. I doubt he spent much time away from the facilities studying. There’s a possibility he may just be stupid as well.

  10. I thought he was cut because of Covid ? Wasn’t that the conspiracy theory PFT was going with ?

  11. This was an unnecessary comment from Nink. He should have kept that to himself. It serves NOBODY, and quite frankly, it smacks of a guy trying to elevate his profile with the networks.

  12. I believe that.
Its no secret that even during his MVP season Carolina’s offense was simplified because Cam struggled going through the progressions. That puts added pressure on the defense and they were fortunate to have a dominate one.

The question is whether or not this Pats team is capable of matching or besting last years record with Jones leading them. I think the answer is yes.

Quit shilling for a fake vaccine.

    _____________________________________________________

Every single day I hear of people like you begging for the vaccine when it’s too late when their lungs start shutting down. Hopefully, very soon, you’ll wake up to the realization you’re being lied to and get the shot like a big boy.

  14. Anyone actually see Newton play last year? He put up high school stats on a professional football team. The Pats resigned him in the off season because they had no other choice for a starter. The draft changed it for him. Newton missed what 5 days of practice? Tannehill just missed 9 and he’s fully vaxxed. NFL and NFLPA are going to have to go back to the drawing board for protocols.

  15. “ would start asking pertinent questions as to why so many “fully vaccinated” people are not vaccinated at all.”……my brain hurts trying to figure out wtf this even means.

  16. Cam ist kaput. Too many hits, but class act off the field with his work with kids. could be a valuable backup on good team. Patriots will be lucky to get over 500

  17. You don’t waste a first round pick on a QB unless he’s going to play. Newton was never in the plans. Newton has led a team to a super bowl, and has been an NFL MVP. Now, he’s a multi-millionaire, many times over. Like Cam says, no need to feel sorry for him. He’s doing OK. The Patriots signed Newton June 28 2020, the same day they were fined $1.1 million and lost a 3rd round pick for taping the Bengals. See PFT Darin Gantt June 28, 2020 article. I always thought the reason for signing Newton that same day was to distract the media, and the plan worked to perfection. Most people either quickly forgot about the cheating scandal, or never heard about it due to the Newton signing. I’m surprised he lasted as long as he did, but when I saw them using him as a human battering ram last year, I knew without a doubt, he wasn’t in their future plans.

  18. If true, that’s pretty sad especially considering how Zolak was calling out Cam for dancing during practice and not studying the playbook in his second year with the Pats. And then Zolak was called out for being culturally insensitive? Cam is who Cam is, a fashion hazard. As per his wishes, I don’t feel sorry for him.

  19. Boston fans being Boston fans when it comes to players of color. ‘Lazy..not smart.. can’t read a defense’. Won a MVP!!! Welcome to mediocrity, NE, post-Brady. BB needed the two best players of modern era( Brady and LT) to for his “great” rep

  20. Cam cared more about which font to use for his Instagram posts than learning the intricacies of the Pats’ complex offense. Not surprised about this story.

He wasn’t playing against the 1s either. Slow down cowboy. You’re comparing Jones to Mahomes. Lol

  22. Never been a fan of Newton… but the guy is gone and out of a job. Cant we just leave it at that? It,s not a good look to pile on. I always thought he was in a no win situation anyway. Any success would have been credited to Bellichick and the fails would all fall on him. My view is thanks for trying and good luck in the future.

  23. If Ninkovich is telling the truth then the 49ers look like fools for passing on Mac in the draft. Mac would have been ready to go day 1 in Shanahan’s offense.

  24. I totally believe that Newton’s unvaccinted status played a role in his being cut. I also believe that he was more dialed in to having a good time than he was to learning the playbook. Not a good look if a rookie was teaching the playbook to a 10 year NFL veteran. The COVID “misunderstanding” was probably the final straw. It was a bad fit from the start.

  25. Newton was more concerned with how he looked for post game press conference than how he looked on the field

Not comparing anything, Mr. Jealous. Stating facts with context is just that.

Jones should be as well received by the media that has been in Mahomes’s jock since 2017.

    Why move the goalposts, hmmm?

I can smell the fear from here.

  27. Appalled at the thinly veiled racist comments here. Affirming “lazy” and “unintelligent” stereotypes is for people from last century. And criticizing someone for their fashion is the most superficial thing in the world. Cam Newton led his team to the Super Bowl and had huge success in Carolina. I remember when he took the league by storm and people really didn’t want to believe it was happening. Okay, so he’s past that time in his career. Fine. Like Brady, he has to survive with his wits because he ain’t no big time athlete. Let’s see if Jones had the success Cam had in his first year in the league. Highly doubt it.

Difference between an Alabama qb and an Auburn qb… LoL

    ————-

I don’t care for Cam but if you’re going to compare the two, can you at least wait until Mac takes his team to the SB?

  29. If you believe Mac Jones was teaching Cam the playbook I have a bridge to sell you. But it fits the narrative some folks want to believe of the dumb African American jock.

  30. Give it a rest on the racism comments and claims.

Race had nothing to do with it.

There is only one race…the human race. Get over skin colors.

  31. If Zolak and Ninkovich both felt Newton’s mental approach and focus was lacking, Newton will have to work on it better for future playing time. Which team will sign him ? Watch out for Seattle …

  32. Cam Newton’s ship has sailed. He got away with being physically gifted when he was younger. Now he is just old, slow, and apparently not too bright.

  33. Poster states referring to someone as being “lazy” or “unintelligent” is racist. Please explain, or am I being unintelligent?

Yes, I’m jealous and scared of football. You got me. Lol.

  35. The Pats found their QB who fits what they do so I look forward to watching Pat’s games again. I couldn’t watch any Cam’s game last season. It’s time to move on.

I just want BB to prove to the naysayers that the modern trend of drafting dual threat QBs is NOT the only way to win games. I will go to my grave believing pocket passing will always be beneficial to winning games.

  36. Mac on a ROOKIE DEAL for the next 4-5 years depending on when the Pats resign him….UNLIKE SO MANY TEAMS THAT GAVE AWAY THE FARM TO GET THEIR GUY, Pats got ALL their picks to build the team around him…. I mean just look what he did this year alone IN ADDITION to landing Mac……VERY EXCITING TIMES AHEAD for the Patriots….
    Can’t wait!!!!
    Go Pats!!!!!

  37. Cam has a great natural talent, but difficulty understanding and maintaining complicated schemes

  38. As an athlete the dude was unreal. But the truth is that he sucked as a QB. If you can’t read defense’s you are a one trick pony who will not ever be considered elite. Mahomes is in the mold of a running QB, but he would rather stay in the pocket and throw. He can read defenses. Cam used his athleticism to succeed. They doesn’t translate to championships.

  39. I don’t think you can win a NFL MVP as a QB…being a running back.

Cam win it as a QB.

    2015
Newton won the NFL MVP in 2015 when he led the Carolina Panthers to a 15-1 record and an appearance in Super Bowl 50, completing 59.8% of his passes for 3,837 yards, 35 touchdowns to 10 interceptions (99.4 passer rating) while rushing for 636 yards and 10 touchdowns.Jun 29, 2020

  40. Cams never been confused for being intelligent, he wasnt in college to learn, he was there to make his Daddy 200k. It’s just crazy that he cant be a backup because the same people who think Odell Beckham is elite, will push for a equally washed up newton to start as soon as their.QB experiences the slightest speed bump. Newton’s never been a top 10 passer, I mean guys on the practice squad are better passers, his bruising running style opened that uo, just like Lamar gets easy pitch amd catch throws with the threat of running. The ship has sailed.

  41. Extremely ironic!
Cam Newton and Tim Tebow were both recruited by Florida.

Both were extremely athletic and both won an NCAA Football Championship.

Neither of them were reported to have high football IQs. Neither could follow highly complex football schemes and both had problems reading defenses.

Cam Newton learning disability was known from his Junior Highschool years. I don’t think Tim Tebow had a learning disability.

Being teased because of it…Cam started dressing up…lol… creatively…to offset his shame. He continues that today.

Nincovich played with Tim Tebow, so he had first hand knowledge of Tim Tebows IQ problems…but never put him on blast.

Cam…played against Nincovich and Tom Brady and won against them both…. although, being lazy and unintelligent.

I guess the Goat, the Coach and Nincovich over used their Pinky and the Brain.

  42. Cam carried the flag for the Patriots when they were down. Nobody should be bashing him making it harder for him to get another job. I sure hope the other former Patriots in the media refrain from any kind of activity like this. Show some appreciation and respect. It is what it is. No need to kick a man when he is down. The one thing I learned during Cam’s time in New England (I watched all his press conferences last year) is that he is a good person. He’s different, but he is a good person. He never threw anyone else under the bus. He was the face of the franchise when times weren’t good and like I said, he held the flag. I wish that guy nothing but the best.

  43. For an organization that prides itself on saying nothing, this was an attempt to embarrass Newton. Most in the media were making Newton’s release about him not being vaccinated, but instead of just letting the media run with their narratives, they are trying to make Newton look bad. There are similarities between what Saban runs and what New England runs, so maybe Mack Jones had a perspective Newton doesn’t. Also, this could keep other teams from signing Newton if teams feel like a rookie is helping him learn the playbook. This is typical. Let’s absorb ourselves by destroying the other person. This is Bush-league.

  44. If this is true, perhaps Newton was only ever able to run an improvised offense. He had 18 months to learn this one. Mac has had 3 months.

  45. The patriots went 7-9 with veteran cam under center.

If they win 6 games with a rookie this year…. I’m not sure that looks better or worse for cam.

Cam was not a good fit from the start. His best days were behind him *before* he got to NE. Patriots hadn’t needed to draft a starting QB in two decades and were scrambling for anyone who could fill the QB1 slot.

Yes. Jones has only played in the pre season. No, that’s not an accurate indication of how he’ll fair through the regular season. Kid’s gotta start somewhere, and Cam wasn’t the answer in NE. Guess time will tell.
