Ezekiel Elliott lament loss of “best player on offense” Zack Martin to COVID diagnosis

USA TODAY Sports

The Cowboys got bad news four days before the season-opening game at Tampa Bay. Pro Bow guard Zack Martin has tested positive for COVID and will miss the game.

Running back Ezekiel Elliott put the loss in context.

Zack’s our best player on our offense,” Elliott said, via Todd Archer of ESPN.com. “I mean most runs, they coming back behind him. It’s disappointing but you can’t harp on it, can’t let it be more than what it is. I mean, definitely going to miss him, definitely wish he was out there, but we still have a game to go play and we got to try and get the job done.”

Connor McGovern is expected to play if Martin can’t. McGovern started eight games last year, six in place of Martin due to injury.

Although it’s being treated by the Cowboys as essentially a done deal that Martin won’t play, he tested positive on Saturday. If he’s vaccinated, he could in theory be cleared by Thursday.

“We’ll see if he plays or not,” Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians told reporters on Sunday. “He could get two negative tests and be there.”

For vaccinated players, that’s the rule — two negative tests at least 24 hours apart. The Cowboys may regard that as sufficiently unlikely to not even put on the radar screen of possibilities.

More players getting it definitely remains on that radar screen. Receiver CeeDee Lamb had it, and he lost his sense of taste and smell. He suddenly got it back while brushing his teeth.

“I literally stopped and looked in the mirror and was like, ‘Whoa. OK.’ I could taste it again,” Lamb said, via Archer. “It was mint. Imagine not tasting mint for a week and then just understanding like, wow, you really can’t taste anything. It’s real. Take it serious, bro. That’s my message.”

Frankly, if more people had taken it seriously from February 2020 and onward, we probably wouldn’t have to take it seriously now. The league and its teams need to continue to take it seriously. Although it’s highly unlikely that games won’t be played because of it, it’s a definite that teams will be missing key players for key games.

Starting with game number one of 272, it’s already happening.

  1. They should not be allowing crowds at the games. Covid right now is @ its worst and people are acting like its over Things we have in abundance in America are stupidity, machismo, greed and selfishness.

  2. Lets all get real here. It is the right wing Republicans who have caused the 2nd outbreak of covid because they don’t think vaccinations are necessary. Now more people are getting sick and dying and its all just one big conspiracy, YEA RIGHT.

  3. Let me clue everyone in on a little somethin’. Jerruh is gonna pick up the phone and place a call to good ol’ Roger G. at the NFL headquarters in New York, and guarantee you that Zack is playin’ come Thursday night. Roger won’t cross Jerruh. Done deal.

  4. So his QB is not the best player on offense? SMH. How many games can the Cowboys win with a backup center vs with a backup QB?

  5. A lot of ignorant people will be hospitalized or killed after attending football games this year.

  6. Teams only have to take it seriously because of the rules the league has put around it. Outside of that, I’m sorry but NFL players are not in the demographic of people who are adversely affected by this. “Follow the science”.

It’s a joke for you to freak out and tell everyone to get vaccinated yet the league still won’t let vaccinated players play. If they can still spread it then who cares if they’re vaccinated or not.

  7. It’s ironic that the freedom for all Americans is being stymied by a desire for “freedom” by selfish people. This thing should’ve and could’ve been under control one year ago. it’s never been more apparent to me a college degree has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence.

  8. The guy’s out, case closed. He’ll be in no condition to lace them up in four days’ time, whether negative twice or not. It’s game 1 and the cowpokes think they have bigger catfish to fry.

  9. Not a Biden or a Trump guy, but at what point is blaming the last guy not an adequate response ? More kids are in hospitals than at any point during the pandemic, the guy right now could amd should be doing a way better job. The election was framed on “pandemic response” Why are they not doing anything now that they ate in charge? They are putting the economy over peoples lives, the same thing they accused the last guy of doing.

  10. Have to love the vax crowd blaming Martin’s decision making when he’s vaccinated. Almost like the pandemic affects everyone not just the unvaccinated.

  11. Interesting how vaccinated players in a demographic of under 35 have the smallest chance of Covid affecting their health. CDC numbers put under 35 deaths at around 10k for the entire population that’s a a .00005 survival rate.

However the NFL has this new gambling deal. So Covid gives the NFL a horrible excuse of to shift leverage to one team. But allow fans and workers and everyone else to participate. Seems quite convenient to me.

  12. If more people would’ve taken it seriously we’d be much further along. I would agree except this administration is letting migrants in like running water. Not sure they’re getting the appropriate Covid updates as they cross illegally into our country. And then of course randomly placed y our society. But ya, if we could take it seriously, that would be great…

  13. Treatments are available but the CDC refuses to use them all in the name of profit, for a vaccine that kinda, sorta, works maybe?

    ————————————————————————————–

He is a guard not a center and to a RB the offensive line is everything. The RB’s job is to make the linebacker or safety miss. That can be hard if they can’t make it past the line of scrimmage.

    Come on!
So, they took your job and then your health? damn those migrants!!!!

Pay attention everyone: The person “in-charge” is never in-charge. The party that controls the Senate is in-charge. Always has been, always will be. Biden was elected to retrieve the country from Trump. That’s all. He did his job well. There’s more work to be done.

Biden’s done his job well? The guy is absolutely pathetic. he cant even take questions from a media that asks him questions such as what his favorite ice cream flavors r. Covid now in the summer which is supposed to be a down time for respiratory viruses is more rampant than it was last year with trump, and of course biden said trump was responsible for every death under his watch, yet biden takes zero responsibility for the 250,000 plus that have taken place under his watch. The man with the most favorable coverage of any president in history is in the lows 40’s approval ratings, that would be equivalent to a student having the answer key to the exam and failing. Biden is pathetic and has done nothing well. All his presidency has done is make trump running again more likely, and next time all those ppl who usually vote red but didn’t last time bc they were duped into thinking biden was a moderate who would make a return to normalcy, wont be voting for biden, and will either not vote or hold their nose and vote for trump.

  18. Florio this virus will never leave us, even if there was 100% vaccination. Because even vaccinated people can contract it. In addition Animals can contract it and spread as well. There will be booster shots annually like the flu shot. Yes being vaccinated reduces symptoms, but of the unvaccinated who have contracted the virus, there’s a 98.2% survival rate. Based on the data the unfortunate 1.2% a majority had underlying issues.

  19. Agree Dak is not the best player on offense. That’s why Jerry should sign Cam Newton. This teams starts blowing other teams out and goes to the Super Bowl with Newton.

  20. I lost my sense of taste last time I had a head cold. No difference between that and the Wuhan Virus. I have an immune system. It’s works just fine. Sink or swim. I’m swimming.

  21. Biden has not been in office for one year. He was given an atrociously handled pandemic as a gift from the Orange King, who also gave him a war to end. The recent hurricane was amongst the worst ever, never-ending natural climate-related natural disasters, and the stock market is strong. Hats off, in my book.

  22. I said this two weeks ago, just wait till vaccinated players can’t play, and here we are. Vaccinate players testing positive and not being allowed to play. So they got the vaccine, now they are testing positive which means their own immune system will kick in as well but you can’t play. Round and round we go. New variant on the way too!

  23. “Frankly, if more people had taken it seriously from February 2020 and onward, we probably wouldn’t have to take it seriously now.”
Quite the understatement. Yes, I blame the unvaccinated also.
The vaccine works. Period. Even better when paired with masks and social distancing.
You are either part of the problem, or part of the solution. Doing nothing (indifference) is part of the problem.
There is no wrong way to do the right thing, and vice-versa.

    Zack Martin is fully vaccinated.
    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Good! Great! He’s another example of how powerful and contagious the Delta variant can be. The vaccines are not guarantees. It’s like a raincoat in a downpour compared to a raincoat in a deluge. No guarantees about getting wet but very good protection as it is. Imagine what the complications for such a large person might’ve been if he hadn’t protected himself.

  25. “frankly”. nah … moving on to the gist of this piece:
Zeke is speaking from an RB’s point of view, of course. Still, his point of view is worth looking at. Someone commented above about an RB’s “…assignment is to make the LB or safety miss.” I beg to differ; not that simple.
What about running the ball vs. blocking, for instance?
Nothing new here, but ‘old school’ football determined – a long time ago – that a good running game *not an RB’s blocking game* helps the QB.
So, from a RB’s point of view – I would submit for your consideration – if he gets the blocking to ultimately make Dak’s job easier, well, everything else falls into place. Makes sense to me.
    NOW, having said THAT.
I am of the opinion the my team relies too much on that old school mindset and need to keep up with the times instead of expecting the times to follow the Cowboys.
