If Dave Gettleman is on the hot seat, things could get awkward for the Giants

The question of whether Giants G.M. Dave Gettleman sits on the hot seat has become one of the questions that hovers over the 2021 season. Two different items from Sunday’s New York Daily News (one by Mike Lupica and one by Pat Leonard) focus on that question. If Gettleman is in trouble — and if he gets fired during or after the season — the Giants will have a problem.

The problem is a simple one. The new G.M. will inherit a coach. The new G.M. will have compiled over the course of his career a short list of coaches that he’d want to hire if/when he gets a G.M. job. Unless the new New York Giants G.M. has current Giants coach Joe Judge at the top of that short list, the new New York Giants G.M. may want to hire his own coach.

That’s how it works, and it’s an item that most fans (and many in the media) often overlook.

But the articles nudging Gettleman toward pink-slip territory abound. It’s important to acknowledge that firing Gettleman and keeping Judge would make it more likely that Judge will be fired after 2022 or 2023 so that the new G.M. can hire the coach he wants.

Have the Giants struggled? Yes. Should they have used the second overall pick in 2018 on running back Saquon Barkley? No. Is the offensive line not what it needs to be? It definitely isn’t.

But if Gettleman will be paying for it with his job if/when the 2021 season implodes for the Giants, it’s important to remember that changing General Managers without changing coaches will further delay the process of getting the team where it needs to be, because the new G.M. will want to change coaches.

The best teams realize that coach and G.M. operate like a team in a three-legged race. They both succeed or they fall flat on their faces. If the G.M. goes and the coach stays, the coach likely will be the next to go. So either both stay or both go. That’s the way to do it.

So, in other words, the right answer for the Giants is to have both guys on the hot seat or neither on the hot seat. And if it makes no sense for Judge to be on the hot seat in only his second year with the team, it makes no sense for Gettleman to be on the hot seat, either.

That doesn’t mean the Giants will be unwilling to fire Gettleman and keep Judge. The Giants are commemorating the 10-year anniversary of their last postseason win for a reason.

  1. Lost in all this is if the season is as bad as every one expects, they will also probably want to draft a new franchise QB and the new GM will have to decide on whether to give Saquon Barkley a record setting contract or spending that money on the offensive line.

Pretty much every move Gettleman has made can be questioned other than electing to cash checks from the Giants.

  2. The Giants are on the right track. They have a good GM and a franchise QB. After Daniel Jones’s rookie season, they made a coaching change (dumb) and the entire team had to start from scratch. So, last season was the first year of the new system. Everyone, including the coaching staff should be much better this year. It’s only year two. Shouldn’t even be talking about making changes. Gettleman is one of the better GM’s. The NY media doesn’t like Santa Claus. Ignore them.

  3. like I have said a million times. when they took a RB in the top 10 with a empty cupboard its not hard to figure the GM is a pineapple.

  4. The next layer to that onion beyond a GM wants his coach, is that coach will want “his” preconceived notion of an ideal qb and if that player isn’t the current one than it’s back to the draft or a very high priced FA move. It’s dominos. This is why trust me as a lions fan, once you see the wrong coach or GM come through the door you know MULTIPLE years are just gone despite whatever answers or progress you’ve made on the roster or teams issues. Hell the next layer after that is the OC and the DC. If a new coach has enough juice, or payroll for his assistants he more than likely will be changing one or both of those. And then the next bloody layer with the schemes, etc etc etc etc. I don’t know if the NYG have the right coach, or to be frank QB. But I’m of the crowd that does think a new GM is a must. So that means back to the drawing board more than likely on all issues. Sorry to say. But that’s how it appears to me a non NYG fan.

  5. Disagree with the premise. Compare the Patriots with the Browns or the Jets over the last 20 years. Continuity vs. Lack Thereof seems to translate to Success vs. Failure over time.

  6. Don’t forget Gettleman passing up on both Justin Herbert and Mac Jones, both of whom have higher ceilings than Daniel Jones…

  7. Gettleman has been a disaster. Team has been a perennial loser with no reason to believe this year will be any different. Daniel Jones is a lower tier Qb with one of the worst lines in the league. His free agency was a disaster, blowing huge money on an always injured Detroit wr that no one else wanted. Barkley still has yet to take a snap, but somehow he’s supposed to play at an all pro level and save the season. Not happening. Gettleman gone by the end of the season.

  8. Taking a rb with the #2 pick is fine. Nothing wrong with Jones as a franchise qb. refusing to improve the line and giving them no chance to succeed, while taking a beating, is why he should be on the hot seat… then doubling down and overpaying for a wideout in free agency and then wasting a first round pick on another was asinine. Your qb needs protection, not weapons. doesn’t matter how great your receivers are if he doesn’t have time to find them.

  9. Mara and Tisch have done poorly selecting the GMs and coaches, and they will continue to make similar decisions. Barkley is spectacularly overrated, and Daniel Jones is essentially Dave Brown II leading one of the least talent-rich rosters in the NFL. Don’t be surprised if the Giants are in the driver’s seat for the first pick by Halloween.

  10. Looking at recent history when a GM is fired, the new GM will give the existing coach a year or two. Then he will hire his coach.
It is too much disruption to abandon everything at once, meaning offensive and defensive systems put in place. The new GM needs a season to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the coaches and players.
A good example if Mayock is fired after this season, I don’t believe that Gruden would go immediately.

  11. That first round pick record he has with the Giants is almost as bad as Belichick’s with the Patriots.

  12. Brett Veach, the current GM of the Chiefs, didn’t hire Andy Reid. How’s that working out? Granted Judge hasn’t proved himself yet but if he does the new GM will work with him just fine.

  13. Shouldn’t they expect a winning season this year? That’s 9 wins. Does anyone believe the Giants led by Daniel Jones are going to win 9 games?

  14. Dear Mara Family – Please make David “Football” Gettleman the Giants GM for life. You are on the right track. So close to putting a dynasty on the field. Daniel Jones should be QB for at least the next two decades. Be patient with him. Very patient. – Sincerely, the rest of the NFC East

  15. Florio – I’m almost positive that in NYG, the ownership hires the coach, not the GM. So any GM that comes into the FO will understand that while their feedback and opinion will be heavily considered, it’s not their choice ultimately.

No new GM would come in and have total freedom to hire their own guy from their shortlist. Just not the way it works there.

Additionally, if Judge is clearly part of the problem, there won’t be much awkwardness if Getty goes. Clean house. On the other hand, if Judge is clearly doing the best with what he has and shows he’s worthy of additional years, then most GM’s would be happy to let that run its course. And then push for someone new. It gives them at least two different regimes to work under. If they come in and get their first choice, and things go sour, that’s on them entirely.

  16. @CharlieCharger must be Mrs. Gettleman. I think drafting an RB in the top ten is always a mistake. You build your franchise in those picks an no franchise is built on an RB, no matter how good that RB is.

When you say they are on the right path then that leaves NO doubt to the rest of us they are screwed and should fire everyone now.

  18. Yet Ryan Pace is the one always speculated to be fired.

Pace stole Justin Fields from Gettleman. Yeah, the Giants absolutely should’ve drafted him and moved on from Jones. Especially with those skill position players.

  19. I get the point of the article but losing is losing….do what’s necessary to change it….

    _____________

The offenses problem is o-line, not QB. Gettleman has ::tried:: to fix the line but he has struggled mightily. (Hernandez, Solder, Zeitler, Thomas)

  21. How does Gettleman have a job in the NFL after destroying the Panthers and delivering a long-time of suffering & disaster to the Giants?

  22. The are plenty of “Patriot Way” front office people that the Giants could pair with Judge. It will be a mistake, but that’s probably the route they’d go.
