T.J. Watt still not practicing

With the start of the season less than a week away, Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt is still declining to practice.

Watt has been sitting out practice since the start of training camp because he wants a new contract, the Steelers haven’t given him one, and he doesn’t want to risk an injury until he has his new contract in place.

Eventually, something will have to give. Either the Steelers will meet Watt’s contract demands, Watt will give in and agree to get back to work without a new contract, or the Steelers are going to have to consider taking disciplinary action against Watt for his refusal to work.

Watt is heading into the fifth and final year of his rookie contract and is scheduled to make a base salary of $10.089 million this season.

  1. I have zero sympathy for a so-called “professional” refusing to do his “job” and get paid $10 million whereas most Americans will NEVER make as much! Seriously pathetic Watt!!

  2. So if he practices and plays, he’ll have to squeak by on a salary of $10 million. I feel his pain.

  3. Maybe it’s time for Watt to quit football and go to work in his major field of study in college

  4. What is it about this family? Play well for a few years then do nothing on the field, but cause distractions all along the way.

  5. The Rooney’s have been winning for decades. Regardless of who’s coaching or who’s playing, the team wins super bowls. They’ll deal with Watt, but the future of the franchise goes into every decision. Somehow the Steelers have figured out how to stay on top for all these years.

  6. If they give in it will change how they’ve always done business going forward. Fine him and make him sweat!

  7. Get out there and show them you’re worth it T.J.
There are at least a dozen NFL 1st round picks playing under the 5th year option this year. I’m not saying you can’t back it up. I’m saying go out and prove it without question. The Teams have the leverage,… not so much the players.

  8. Great team player!! Sorry but if I was his teammate I would be a little miffed at the fact it is 6 days away from the start of the season and he is doing a “sit in” cause 10 million isn’t good enough.

  9. Get yourself a huge insurance policy against injury if they don’t want to extend you. It’s all about the money,… right ??

  10. Not worth what he’s asking. The Steelers and others have proven that edge rushers are a dime a dozen and easily drafted and replaced.

  11. I don’t remember his play versus the Browns in the playoff game this past season.

I do acknowledge his regular season contributions until Bud Dupree went down.

  12. He must be concerned he’s not going to be able to perform.

I can’t imagine why you’d not want to play yourself into free agency and get paid the highest price ever….

  13. All the lunchpail bootstrap boomer Steeler fans losing their minds right now… The only way Pittsburgh keeps any credibility in this is to sit the guy and make him cave. If they do I’ll give them my respect. But if I were this punk Watt, I’d do exactly what he’s doing though. I’m not risking a career ender with his kind of leverage.

  14. Lotta football fans batting for the owners/team as usual. TJ is a great player, he’s under absolutely no pressure to do anything other than be available for week 1.

Winning what? Not SBs in the last 15 years

  16. I get it why he is holding off from playing. One major injury he can lose millions but Demanding to be the highest paid player is just being Greedy.

  17. The Steelers should take out a $50 million injury policy for him for one year. And then require that the cost for it be deducted from his new contract whenever it gets done.

  18. It’s hard for an average working American to imagine themselves in that position but I’d be doing the same thing. You wouldn’t wave a winning lottery ticket over an open flame either.

Bud Dupree should fork over some of his money. After all it was Watt who got him paid.
    __________

Steelers 11-0 with Dupree last season. 1-5 without him.

  20. Basically he put the Steelers in a spot where they can’t negotiate without it appearing that they caved. He should know this tactic has never worked with the Steelers.
Also, I know he is a sack machine but he only had 29 tackles last year. He was in on 320 running plays. That doesn’t sound elite to me. He should play the year at the 10 mil and try to earn that next big deal when his contract runs out.

  21. As usual so many fans side with the billionaire owners. So much hate and jealousy. Players are lucky to get 1 or 2 chances a career to get that big payday so I don’t blame them for getting all they can when they can. Every single play players risk career ending/ altering injuries so don’t blame him for sitting out.

  22. Cracks me up when a “fan” says they have no sympathy for this guy “refusing to do his job” for the $10M contract he signed. Do those so-called fans feel the same way about the team when the team cuts a player for “cap reasons” when the player still has a year or more on their signed contract?

When was the last time they won a Superbowl? I think you meant all ‘those’ years so long ago. Because ‘these’ years they really have not done much., nor appear poised to.
