Mike Zimmer: Vikings are “top-heavy with finances,” depth is a concern

At a time of year when some NFL head coaches are outwardly optimistic about the upcoming season, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer admitted some concern today.

Zimmer acknowledged that the Vikings have a lot of salary cap space tied up at the top of the roster, and said that makes it hard for the team to have a lot of depth.

“It’s concerning,” Zimmer said, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN. “I feel really good about the top guys, and then some of these young guys got to come on. But when you’re kind of top-heavy with finances, that’s what you’ve got to do. Hopefully we’ll stay healthy, and try to get these younger guys better.”

Although Zimmer didn’t single out Kirk Cousins by name, the reality is Cousins is the reason the Vikings are “top-heavy with finances.” Cousins’ cap hit this season is $31 million, the second-highest of any player in the NFL behind only Russell Wilson. Other than Cousins, the Vikings aren’t particularly top-heavy.

But Cousins’ contract is the one the Vikings have saddled themselves with, and they’re either going to win or lose with Cousins this year. Zimmer may be laying the groundwork for a ready-made excuse if they lose more than they win.

  1. Yep the chips have been pushed to ” All In” this year, hate to say it but it could be Zim’s last gasp and I like the guy.

And besides you and Rick, who else can you blame for this.

    ———————-

They’ll be looking for a new OC again…

  3. Well it kinda sounds like Zimmer never wanted cousins in the first place. It’s the coaches responsibility to get the team to perform but Rick really effed up with cousins.

  4. they could’ve been a sleeper playoff to watch if not for this major cloud hanging over the entire team.

  5. It’s one thing to be tied to a highly paid QB when you’re winning 11,12,13 games a year consistently. It’s another thing when you’re winning 7,8,9 a year. Cousins has got to go. But, he did play the system very well to his advantage, and made a lot of money. It only takes one fool…

  6. Kirk at $31 million is a nothing compared what he and others could be if they are still on their teams next year. Ryan $48.6, ARodg $46.1, Kirk $45, Watson $40.4, Tannehill $38.6, Wilson $37, Mahomes $35, Dak $34.5, Goff $31.1 so just be quiet Zim. Hopefully you, rick and Kirk are all gone next year.

  7. Everyone and their hatred for Cousins, which realistic QB would you rather have out there? Bridgewater? Foles? Cam? Trubisky? The amount of money he is being paid is just he going rate of QBs now days, get used to it.

  8. 31 millions tied to a terrible qb and you are stuck with him, that’s a terrible position to be in.

  9. Is that why they just signed their RT to a 5 year $92.5 million deal with $53M guaranteed?

Mac Jones – $2.8 million cap hit

  11. Yet if Cousins wasn’t extended after 3 painfully average, underachieving seasons, we would have $31M dollars extra to spend…..

  12. They’re a cursed organization. Who but the Vikings would dominate the 1998 season like they did and not roll through the super bowl?

  13. It’s one thing to have your head coach sitting on a flaming hot seat with his eyes wide open, it’s another to be looking at another complete top-to-bottom rebuild after he flames out.

  14. This is what happens when you overspend on an average QB. With that contract being guaranteed, they’ll be screwed for a bit

  15. Makes you really wonder where they’d be had they just resigned Keenum to a team friendly deal back when they were only a game away from the Super Bowl.

  16. Should have kept the magic man case – he had what it takes in the NFL and Vikings….. CHEMISTRY!!! cousins has none and ruined us financially and couldn’t care less.

  17. Could be worse, Zim. You could always be in a situation where the QB was so disgusted with the front office that he:

-Admitted that he was 50/50 on retiring from the game
-Openly attacked the front office at training camp press conferences
-Has openly advertised that this is his last year with the franchise before moving on to greener pastures.

Pretty tough to compete with that level of drama.

    *********
No, it could be a lot worse still and Zimmer is dealing with it right now.
You could be dealing with a QB who doesn’t posses the necessary skill set to take you beyond what could only be described as the center of mediocrity, at best.
While being paid excessively to do the job he’s not capable of.

-A QB who struggles mightily when faced with teams that have a .500 record or better in regular season, or one of the rare occasional times his team makes the postseason.
-One who has an absolute abysmal record in prime time games.
-A “leader” who refuses to do everything necessary to make sure he’ll be available for every game this season.

Almost impossible to compete in a very talented NFC Conference when you’re in a situation such as this, especially when your head coaching seat is getting hotter and hotter. 🤣
