Greg Zuerlein on missed FG: “If I did my job, we win that game.”

USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys fell short in their bid to spoil the season opener in Tampa, falling 31-29 to the Buccaneers on Thursday night.

Cowboys kicker Greg Zuerlein missed a pair of field goals in the contest that could have potentially proved the difference in the contest if they’d gone through the uprights. While no one will fault a miss from 60 yards out, Zuerlein’s badly pulled miss 31 yards away will be a significant “what-if” for Dallas as they return home.

For his part, Zuerlein put the blame squarely on his shoulders.

If I did my job, we win that game. I feel bad for the guys in there that played their ass off, and I didn’t hold up my end of the deal. …We’re right there (as a team). I just have to do my job,” Zuerlein said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

There was nothing obviously wrong with the operation of the kick. Zuerlein just yanked the kick wide left. Zuerlein said he had an idea what happened but would need to watch it back to confirm.

“I’ll have to go back and watch the film. I know what I think I did. …To actually get down to the nuts and bolts, I won’t know until I watch the film,” Zuerlein said.

Zuerlein didn’t play at all during the preseason as he worked his way back from back surgery this offseason. He didn’t use that as an excuse for the miss.

“If I’m out there, I should make the kicks. No excuses,” he said.

  1. He missed an extra point AND a 31 yard field goal.

Make those and the game may have turned out different.

  2. The problem with kickers is that they get so few chances that every mistake is magnified.

Was Z perfect? No, but it’s hard to pin the blame solely on the kicker when the team gives up 31 points. If the officials had been a little better at their job the score would be different as well. If the defense had been better, the cowboys might have won.

  3. He figured it out as the game went on. Kind of like a pull hook in the golf swing, he made the adjustment.

  4. No. If he made his kicks, Brady woulda just marched down and scored a game winning td instead of running out the clock and kicking a fg.

  5. Any excuse to make one feel better!
IF the Bucs don’t turn the ball over 4 times, the Cowboys are blown out…
works both ways…. You lost… just grow from it and get better..

  6. There was an obvious blatant offensive pass interference that didn’t get called, but Brady could have pulled it out even if it did get called. But it kind of felt like I wasted 3 hours watching a game, and that penalty didn’t get called. So the refs had just as much to do with the outcome as the players, and that was an awesome football game. Shouldn’t be decided by that. I’m probably not going to make a point to watch every nationally broadcast game, if it’s going to go down like that. I’m probably not the only one that feels like that

  7. OR one could say that IF the Buc didn’t turn the ball over so much this would have been a blow out.

  8. OK Z, you had two misses you want back. Godwin also wants back his blunders. If both guys get them back, guess what? The Bucs still win.

WOW …. someone taking person responsibility instead of blaming the refs..

Would be cool if the refs did the same.

  10. @tylee I guess you don’t get the idea of personal responsibility. The guy (wrongly) put the game on his shoulders. Yeah, wish he’d have hit those kicks. Also wish the refs would have called obvious OPI on that last drive. All I know is that the Cowboys are more likely to go 7-10 than 10-7 and that was hardly an 8.5 spread. Bucs weren’t that good last year (to any true FB fan that’s obvious) and benefited from a weird Covid season. Hardly a lock this year. Just wish there was more competition in their division.

  11. “How Bout Dem Cowboys” they dont play another playoff calibre team for the next ten or so weeks
so chances are they win the NFC East in a runaway.talk about a schedule made for the playoffs.

  12. Shouldn’t long time NFL kickers be able to make FGs in their sleep by now? Watch film? Gimmie a break!

  13. if t wasnt for number 35 of the bucs being god awful, they ould have won easy going away. He was so bad dallas didnt need to run the ball.
Sure didnt look like an awesome football team.

Everyone ignoring the fact that the db had both hands on the wr. And the horrible encroachment call late in the game vs Tampa when the o lineman clearly jumped first.

  15. You can’t put that on yourself, Mr. Kicker Man. If you hit those kicks, other plays may have been run in the situations that followed. The team with the ball last, won. It doesn’t get any closer than that.

It was good to see Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott get some redemption, even though it was a loss.

  16. You can’t beat a team like Tampa by kicking field goals as they can score at will. Dallas needed to score touchdowns not field goals.
