Ten days later, there’s still no interest in Cam Newton

USA TODAY Sports

Ten days after he became a free agent, former NFL MVP Cam Newton continues to be unsigned. And there continues to be crickets around the league regarding his future.

As mentioned last night during the Cowboys-Buccaneers pregame show, Newton still wants to play — and he knows he’s down to his last chance. As one coach explained it, however, Newton may already be at the end of the road.

No team has given any serious consideration to making Newton the backup. Like most former franchise quarterbacks (with the exception of Joe Flacco), Newton isn’t wired to stand on the sidelines and hold a clipboard. As another coach put it, the right situation could arise once the season unfolds.

His best play will be to wait for an injury. Even then, the question is whether the team will bring in Newton or rely on the next man up.

His Funky Friday episode regarding his release by the Patriots won’t help him get a new team, for one important reason. That new team will realize that, if it doesn’t work out, it likely will be the subject of an eventual Funky Friday.

Then there’s the vaccination issue. Newton isn’t vaccinated. While he insisted that his release by the Patriots had nothing to do with his vaccine status, it will be a factor in his next move.

If a need for his services arises, it will be immediate. Teams won’t want to have to wait five days to get him in the building. Thus, even though his father, who appeared in the video, admitted that he’s vaccine hesitant, Cam needs to become vaccine compliant if he wants to enhance his chances of getting another job in the NFL.

  1. Dak’s shoulder/arm will fall off by week 4 they’ll shut him down for Tommy John surgery and then you bring in Cam Newton.

  2. Don’t NFL teams typically wait to sign vets until after the first game, at which point salaries aren’t guaranteed for the year if cut?

  3. Cam fills out his resume and the first thing he writes in big letters is,

” I’m A Distraction, My Aura Must BE Accepted, And Watered Daily, Regardless”.

Who doesn’t want to deal with that.

  4. He’s not the smartest guy to ever lace em up! Only a desperate team would bring him in. Would take the whole season to learn the playbook!

  5. Now that he is to beat-up to run anymore which is most of game (running QB’s do hold the safeties and LBs long enough to create easy throws), his inaccuracy as a passer really shows and at best he is only a covid emergency(hello Denver) QB 3rd stringer, but since he won’t get vaccinated he is worthless for that.

  6. Teams wait until after week 1 to sign veterans so that salaries are not guaranteed, right?

  7. There is a thing line between having a strong healthy ego and being a preening narcissist. Cam crossed that line years ago and doesn’t know the way back.

  8. Newton said it best when he was drafted: “I’m an icon and an entertainer”. He is no football player!

  9. Face it, the phone isn’t ringing because NFL coaches hate the undo drama that Cam would instantly bring to any organization.

  10. Cam Newton cannot be counted on to make the right decision on the field. The Super Bowl fumble and the failure to dive for the ball was a good illustration of that. His decision to refuse vaccination is more proof that he won’t listen to good advice or convention wisdom. He just does whatever he wants on or off the field.

  11. “My life is the complete opposite of everything I want it to be. Every instinct I have in every aspect of life, be it something to wear, something to eat… It’s often wrong.”

    George Costanza describing Newton.

  12. Cam has become a distraction like Tebow used to be. Tebow could have been a backup QB but teams didn’t want to deal the distraction, unfortunately Cam is the same way now.

  13. Cam: “They are still angry because I didn’t jump on that loose football once upon a time.”

  14. Hes done put a fork in him . No vax, bad arm, cant read the playbook, doesnt like fumbles, always doing the superman, talikng in the 3rd person, the Aura

  15. I just never got the feeling Cam considered football his priority. His really ridiculous outfits for post game pressers, obviously he put a lot of focus on that, during the week, deciding what to wear. In my opinion his heart never was in it. Some are blessed with natural ability, some are blessed with intense drive and determination to win.

  16. Cam as a TE, he would be a beast and imagine the trick plays a team could build around him – would be game changer – just imagine flea flick to Cam or how an OC could expand the play action pass. The TE/WR would be perfect for his character and the aura would be accepted. To the Ravens!

  17. When Newton didn’t go after the fumble in the SB against the Broncos, who would want him after that?

  18. He needs to get vaccinated and let every other team know that. Then maybe other teams will be interested.

  19. Can Newton fails to realize that Cam Newton totally sucked last year.

    It’s just that simple

  20. It’s best to leave before you become an embarrassment to yourself. It’s too late now. People can’t un-see Newton’s video or his qb play. It was awful watching him play last season.

  21. In the same week:
The Patriots cut Cam Newton…and brought in Duck Hodges for a workout…
That should tell you the chances of Cam going back to New England.

  22. When Newton didn’t go after the fumble in the SB against the Broncos, who would want him after that? Answer—Bill Belichick?

  23. like kaperdink, he showed he can be dfficult to deal with. Teams can allow some of it for super performers, but not guys who are living off past achievements

  24. Nobody wanted him last year the Pat’s bit cause he was cheap but he played like trash and they finally saw enough and with them having a younger better option they cut bait thank god!

  25. I think crappy, washed up QB with no heart and bad leadership skills has more to do with his unemployment than his vaccination status

  26. How long do you think anyone is going to keep up with this vaccination scam? You think everyone is going to keep extra people employed to check vax cards forever? How about we give out antibody positive cards as well? If you have the antibodies, iit doesn’t matter how you got them. Every positive covid case, is another person that doesn’t have a use for the vaccine. Too many people out there don’t understand what a vaccine is.

  27. Really the only teams that would probably want to take a shot are the Texans, Broncos, And maybe Washington? Those are teams that are currently using bridge QBs. Maybe he’s a bridge himself? If he would’ve developed as a better passer I’m sure he would be getting all sorts of interest. This is the same thing with the NBA. Paint playing big men are not longer sought after. A run first big bodied QB is no longer sought after. He got an MVP and had a SB run. That’s his career, open and shut.

  28. Let me just make a bold statement, vaccination is not the reason cam is unemployed.

A qb with no arm, no accuracy, no film study, high pay rate = 0 jobs available for me Newton, him getting a vaccine doesn’t equal him getting a job.

Please watch last season, and subsequent pre season snaps, he’s just not good anymore. He’s still hurt. Or father time hasn’t been kind.

I just can’t understand why everyone in the world doesn’t log in here for free medical advice.

  30. Maybe he can sue the league for collusion like a former mobile, big armed QB did when his career flamed out and couldn’t hack it as a backup.

  31. Does anyone remember that the only reason the Patriots signed Newton was because they were fined $1.1 million, and had a 3rd round draft choice taken away for cheating. They were caught videotaping the Bengals. They signed Cam the same day the league fined them, and amazingly, nobody noticed. Imagine that. As soon as the dust settled, he was escorted out the back door.

  32. He was never a QB you could count on to year after year to get you to the playoffs. And now that his athleticism has declined he’s not even in the running to get you every 3 or so years.

The plain truth is he is no longer even a middle of the road QB.

As Leo Derocher is credited with saying “Son I’ve lost with you, I can lose without you.”

It’s just over as eventually happens to all of us. Man up, pick yourself up and move on to the next thing.

  33. His total fascination with himself is enough for most teams to ignore him. His self absorbed videos was a laugh this past week

    ========================

They love the drama … Bell, Tebow and about 20 others just as unqualified keep getting jobs and coaches doing it. They love it.
