Mike Zimmer: Joe Burrow reminds me of Carson Palmer, will probably be better

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer was defensive coordinator of the Bengals for six seasons before getting the top job in Minnesota, and his time in Cincinnati overlapped with Carson Palmer, who was a Pro Bowl quarterback with the Bengals. But Zimmer thinks the Bengals have an even more talented quarterback now.

Zimmer, whose Vikings play in Cincinnati on Sunday, said Joe Burrow throws the ball like Palmer but should develop into an even better quarterback.

“I have been extremely impressed with watching Burrow. This kid is competitive,” Zimmer said, via Bengals.com. “He’s a heck of a scrambler. He’s got a big-time arm, he’s not afraid to throw the ball into tight windows. He seems to see things and get the ball off really quick. It looks like, I remember, Carson the way he could spin the ball. This guy probably will be better than him. He’s a better scrambler, but I’ve been so impressed with the toughness. He will take a shot, scramble and dive or the first down. Run a quarterback draw. All the things he does. I think y’all hit big on that one.”

Burrow will return to the field on Sunday after last season ended with a torn ACL. The Bengals hope Burrow will have many good years left in him after that injury, just as Palmer did.

  1. Subtext — read Zimmer’s comments and mentally attach the word “unlike Kirk Cousins” to the end of every statement about Palmer or Burrow.

Feeling uneasy about the Vikings chances before the season?

    This is why we should.

  2. Let him prove it. This guy gets a pass but Tua doesn’t? Cowherd touts Burrow like he’s Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Babe Ruth and Zeus all rolled into one. Let him prove it like everyone else before he’s just assumed to be a great player.

  3. He better be better than Palmer. Palmer fell off a cliff after the Knee injury. Seemed like he was afraid to step into throws and over threw guys by a mile. I suspect we’ll see some of that early from Burrow, hopefully he gets past that mental block.

A pass for what? Burrow was playing extremely well before that injury last year. Tua hasn’t shown that he can play that way or stay healthy.

    A pass for what?

Zimmer will be back in Cincy as dcoordinator within 6 months.

Cincinnati wishes Zimmer would come be their head coach. Bengals head coach has widely been regarded as totally inept. Bengals would love to have Zimmer as their head coach.

  6. This is dead nuts. I live in Cincinnati and saw it myself.

  7. He reminds me of Carson Palmer, too. They were both picked #1 overall by the Bengals. I’m kind of stuck trying to come up with a second thing. Palmer was legit. A classic pocket QB. Burrow is legit, too. But he has the added dimension of being able to extend plays, and buy extra time. He’s awesome inside and outside the pocket. I’m thinking he’s easily going to soon be in the top 5 conversations. The only negative with both guys is they went to the Bengals. Palmer was smart to get out. He gave it his best shot, but it was obvious the owners weren’t committed wo winning. Palmer had been a winner all his life, and he expected the team to at least try to win. When they let Justin Smith walk away in free agency, Palmer probably felt the owners quit on him. It’s funny how some people turn that around. Pay attention folks. Now they have another legit elite QB. Let’s hope this goes better, or even hope that Mr. Brown turns the team over to his daughter soon. That’s really the best hope. I doubt the man is ever going to change.

  8. Bengals did hit jackpot. Burrow has everything you want in a QB. They have a four year window now, better not screw it up b/c there isn’t another one coming around anytime soon that wants to be in Cincinnati.

  9. I’m not sure Zim was thinking “unlike Kirk” after each of those statements, but because he’s never come close to praising Cousins like that, he is in effect saying, “This is the kind of QB I’d like to have.”

  10. Zimmer likes working for franchises that have never won a championship. Not 13, not 5, not even 1. Think of that. Over a hundred years of futility from built Zim into what he is today. Extend that man Ziggy.

Zimmer was on the Dallas Cowboys defensive staff when they won the Super Bowl in 1995, so you are incorrect.

  12. Palmer is a quitter. Only similarity is the number nine on the uniform. Burrow is special. Who Dey.

Thanks, I stand corrected. If MN has a trophy case I wonder if Zim can put his participation trophy in there to, you know, motivate his team.

Or you’re better off just saying you stand corrected and leaving it at that, instead of making another snarky comment to reflect your personal feelings that don’t reflect reality.

No Milty. I don’t feel uneasy nor do I (like you and many others) feel compelled to create some fantasy that every compliment that Zimmer gives out is some secret code that he doesn’t like Cousins. Cousins is a blue chip QB who can make every throw and has played at a high level every year with the Vikings.
Quit whining about Cousins and realize rhe only reason they sucked last year was that the defense was decimated and HORRIBLE.

With even a MIDDLING defense Lasr year Cousins would have had them in the playoffs again.

  16. Zimmer is buttering up Joe Burrow in the hopes that the Bengals will hire him after firing Zac Taylor & after Vikings dump Zim.

  17. The Tua comparison is funny. Im not a fan of either one of them but if you had to pick between the two you gotta take Burrow right? Burrow looked pretty good before the injury. Tua had the better team and got more Wins but if you saw the games you cant feel confident about Tua. It was very Tebowish except Tebow didnt have Fitzpatrick to come in and save the day for any of his wins. Burrow may end up buried in Cincy. Just an overall bad team he may not be able to lift. Maybe the injury does him in like it has others, but as of now Id take Burrow over Tua any day.

  18. Yeah I’d say all these young QBs are being touted as the next great thing aside from Tua and Lawrence. Burrow hasn’t even played a full season, Mac Jones is yet to take a meaningful snap, and Herbert is going to have to live up to his rookie season. The good news? Nobody actually knows squat. It’s all hot takes on these dudes. Let them play and see where the chips fall.
