The Vikings have officially added a backup quarterback and backup running back to the roster for Sunday’s opener against the Bengals.

Vikings quarterback Sean Mannion and running back Ameer Abdullah have officially been moved from the practice squad to the active roster. Mannion is expected to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Kirk Cousins, while Abdullah can provide depth at running back behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison, and help on special teams.

Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reports that the Vikings are likely to elevate Mannion this week and next week, and then add him to the 53-man roster after that. Players can only be elevated from the practice squad to the active roster twice per season.

The Vikings like the potential of rookie quarterback Kellen Mond, but they think if Cousins goes down Mannion gives them a better chance to win early in the season.

  1. Sean Mannion gives them a better chance to win if Cousins gets hurt. Wow, that’s the funniest thing I’ve read all week.

  2. Wow! Mond must be a complete bust if he can’t even win the backup job as a rookie.
At least that’s what I’ve been told. 🤣

  3. Does that mean Mond is a bust? We were told that about Love last year because he wasn’t the #2….does that not apply anymore?

  4. I think the Minnesota Vikings are showing regret for burning a 3rd pick on Kellen Mond. He’s the epitome and pure definition of a shotgun, throw to the first read, spread college offense QB. Kellen couldn’t read a defense to save his life…nor was he ever asked to in college.

  5. The Packers traded up in the 1st round to select Love, Mond was taken in the 3rd round. Too early to tell if either one is a bust. But being that Love was selected so high and that it cost GB a 4th rounder… if he’s not a pro bowler, bust. Mond was the smarter pick.

You keep telling yourself that. There’s no doubt Iin my mind Spielman would trade a first round pick for Love today. Gutekunst is too smart to part with him. Remember your comment in a couple years.

  7. I’ll remember. Trade a 1st rounder? For what? A guy who threw 29 interceptions in 30 games? C’mon man. Don’t be delusional.

  8. Es El Repollo
Assuming that was sarcasm? Or was it ignorance? They have one of the better running games in the league.
BTW… Try whole sentences with all the words….

  9. “Does that mean Mond is a bust? We were told that about Love last year because he wasn’t the #2….does that not apply anymore?”

You misunderstood the joke. People expected more from Love because the Packers traded up to grab Love at least 3 rounds earlier than anyone else wanted him. That’s why when he performs like a fourth round pick it is funny, Mond is performing exactly like you would expect someone not taken at the top of the draft so that is pretty much the norm. No real joke there. But good try at irony, keep practicing you will get it.

  10. Its more like Zimmer doesn’t like Rookies…how Mannion gives us any chance to win I have no clue…hes worthless. Id rather see Mond run and handoff to Cook then for Mannion to smell the turf.

  11. Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher uses a pro style or West Coast offense.
This entire thread shows yet again how little Packer fans understand about football

  12. I heard during practice Zimmer looked over and saw Browning and Mond. He knew they wouldn’t cut it and he’d have to go out and get old #4 back.

  13. I’ve watched the Vikings for a long long time and I can say that Mannion is the worst quarterback I’ve ever seen play for the Vikings. That includes guys like Spurgeon Wynn, Gary Cuozzo, Joe Webb and Josh Freeman. Wynne is probably the most infamous, but I’d start him in a heartbeat over Mannion because at least he could run a bit. What is Zimmer thinking?

  14. Not sure how many Aggie games you saw with Mond as QB but he was always overthrowing his receivers especially early in the games. He cost the aggies many 3 and outs putting the out of the big games early. Sorry Vikings fan but Mond is not an NFL qb

  15. Sean Mannion is one of the worst backup QBs in the NFL. He was consistently outperformed by Kyle Sloter in the past, yet that never seemed to matter to the Vikings. I have never seen Mannion have a successful outing whether preseason or regular season. He always looks inept and over his head. Yet, Zim would stand there and tell us how good he is “in the QB room” or peddle some other line like “gives us the best chance to win”. If the best chance to win is no chance to win, then yes he does. Why the Vikings keep this guy in the NFL is certainly not clear and obvious.

  16. Found this recently. It’s regarding the inability of Fisher to implement an effective pro style offense at A&M.

That’s the wrong mindset to have with Mond, because at this point, he’s done the growing he’s going to do in college. It’s pretty obvious that he’s never going to fully grasp this offense and continuing to just hope that he eventually will is lazy from Fisher. It would be a lot more productive to rework these plays around simplifying the reads for Mond, rather than expecting him to read defenses at an NFL-level consistently.”

I guess the problem was going to his first read every single time.

  17. Spielman doesn’t like QB controversy. Signing Mannion insures there will never be one this season. No Vikings fans are going to be yelling to put Mannion in the game.
